The article scrutinises several vowel reduction and lenition phenomena by employing a model of syntax-like structural representations, i.e. Government Phonology 2.0. In contrast to the standard GP model, whereby lenition and vowel reduction can be viewed as shortening, element suppression or status switching, the structural approach employs the procedure of tree pruning with a heavily limited role of melodic annotation. This paper will take a closer look at node removal with special attention to its trajectory. In particular, two basic directionalities are considered: top-down and bottom-up. The former has been proposed to account for vowel reduction whereby the highest positions are deleted retaining the head and potentially its sister. The acquisition of plosives and fricatives points to the latter trajectory, which disposes of nodes closer to the head. However, the choice of positions that are targeted in weak contexts might be also related to the inherently encoded hierarchy of terminal nodes within the constituents in question.

The study assessed pruning efficiency of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) using different types of specialist pruning saws. Elements used in the study included the diameter and number of removed knots, pruning time per tree and passage time from one tree to another.

W pracy przeprowadzono ocenę wydajności podkrzesywania sosny (Pinus sylvestris L.) z użyciem różnego typu specjalistycznych pił stosowanych do podkrzesywania. W pomiarach uwzględniono takie elementy, jak grubości i ilość usuwanych sęków, czas podkrzesywania jednego drzewa oraz czas przejścia od drzewa do drzewa. Badania zostały przeprowadzone na grubogałęzistych sosnach pochodzących z plantacyjnej uprawy nasiennej. Rodzaj użytego narzędzia przy obcinaniu gałęzi żywych do 1,5 m wysokości w wypadku grubogałęzistych sosen ma istotny wpływ na efektywny czas wykonania zabiegu. Różnice między typami narzędzi mają charakter statystycznie istotny. Usuwanie żywych gałęzi sosen grubogałęzistych na plantacyjnej uprawie nasiennej jest 2,5-krotnie dłuższe, niż w drzewostanach gospodarczych.

Conditions found in cities do not favoure the growth or development of trees. This results from three major factors: 1. the lack of available oxygen around the root system, which is caused by excessive soil compaction. This results in plant suffocation, 2. a shortage or excess of certain macro- and micronutrients, and frequently their inappropriate ratios do not guarantee perfect plant nutrition, 3. a drastic shortage of water available to roots, which leads to drought, as a result leaves prematurely dry up and die. Knowing the most important factors affecting the adequate tree condition it is possible to reduce unfavourable factors to a certain degree in case of new plantings. There are very many such cultivation measures to be applied. Selection of a species and a variety for specific habitat conditions, selection and preparation of an adequate substrate, selection of appropriate nursery material, adopted planting method – these are only some factors determining the future condition of trees, which need to be properly selected prior to tree planting. The second group of cultivation measures is realized already after planting trees in their permanent location. It includes such measures as watering, fertilization, cutting, mulching, aeration and fencing of trees. Some of these cultivation measures and their effect on tree condition are discussed in this study.
