The purpose of this study is to explore the ways in which LGBTQ campers and counsellors are shaped by and shape summer camp. Summer camps are often the place where many US youth begin to learn about sex and sexuality. It is a unique and important spatial locale that is understudied in both sexualities and wider sociological enquiry. To better understand the impact of summer camp experiences on sexualities, the study analyses retrospective interviews with former campers about their experiences at a summer camp, as well as podcasts and blogs. We address two key areas of camp life: sexual firsts and being openly queer at camp. Many campers are less likely to be out at camp than they are at home. The exception to this is when there are visible staff or counsellors that are out at camp. Despite not being out, many LGBTQ campers have their first sexual experience at camp, though many do not see it as sexual at the time of the act. Our findings reaffirm the importance of contact with queer people, both for LGBTQ acceptance from straight/cis people and for the self-acceptance of young queer persons. We conclude by discussing how this space is unique and how it can be improved for LGBTQ people’s experiences and development at summer camps.

The aim of this article is to outline the issues related to the specificity of the image of the writer and his role in society created in Tadeusz Konwicki’s early works. This stage in the writer’s life opens with the first short story that Konwicki published, namely “Kapral Koziołek i ja” from 1947, after which the initial model of his writing is subject to gradual erosion and ends between 1954 and 1955 with the novel titled Z oblężonego miasta. Investigating the motif of the creative work house on the basis of Z oblężonego miasta is a pretext for reflection on the category of the writer’s work. The article traces the motifs of the professional category of the writer, through analysing the constructions on which Konwicki’s narratives are based. At the same time, due to the analysis of social discourse in which the author participated, the article outlines the social functions he performed at a given time.

This paper is an attempt at an untraditional reading of one of Stefan Żeromski’s widely known novels, Syzyfowe prace. In most cases this work is interpreted as a representation of cruel trials which boys and young men in 19th century Poland had to experience inside a tsarist highschool, where they were not permitted to use their mother tongue and fell prey to severe persecution due to their nationality. However, in this article a Russian highschool in a provincial Polish town, so eloquently and vividly portrayed by Żeromski, is recognized as a form of a total institution, one of those described by Erving Goffman. Permanent supervision and systemic violence is simply inherent to that place, any national issues notwithstanding. Despite being so objectified and oppressed, students find some strategies of rebellion that enables them to live through this degrading experience. To analyze these forms of subversive protest, I use Mikhail Bakhtin’s concept of carnival and the culture of laughter.
