The paper shows a theoretical reflection and empirical research of the value of work, as it is perceived in the teaching of the Church, but also shows the attitude adopted by the people who are unemployed. According to the basic assumptions of the doctrine of the Church, the subject-related character of work has been stressed here. It is man who is its creator and addressee, therefore its value is not merely limited to ensure living conditions. At the same time, the manner of „defining” the value of work is subjectively characterized, in respect of social circumstances and the personal situation of those who are to assess and approve of work. The paper describes the social circumstances of the unemployed, as well as the causes of this unemployment in the socio-political breakthrough in Poland. On the basis of trial research among the unemployed and homeless men from the Brother Albert Hospice for the Homeless in Lublin, the situation of those people has been analyzed. Among other things, not only the very manner of assessment of work has been analyzed, but also the circumstances under which the respondents lost it, the actual motives why they search for a job, and what obstacles they have in doing it. It follows from the research that the causes of the present situation of the people under study are not only the social conditions that are the reasons why they are unemployed. We have to take into consideration their personalities; they are often passive and adopt a pessimistic attitude towards reality and their own chances. The author draws pedagogic conclusions concerning the aid to the unemployed and homeless (for these two situations are most often consequently linked).

Miłosierdzie jest jądrem chrześcijańskiej moralności i wymogiem życia chrześcijanina. Wyraża się ono w słowach, czynach i modlitwie. W artykule zostało przedstawione chrześcijańskie ujęcie miłosierdzia w odniesieniu do relacji opiekuńczo-wychowawczych z osobą z niepełnosprawnością (rodziców, nauczycieli, pedagogów, terapeutów). Odniesiono się do przykładów miłosierdzia objawianego przez Boga Ojca oraz Chrystusa. Wskazano na to, co jest istotne w przygotowaniu wychowawców do spełniania swej roli w duchu miłosierdzia, scharakteryzowano istotę miłosiernej postawy wychowawcy oraz jej cechy (przejawy praktycznego realizowania czynnej miłości). Realizację miłosierdzia w relacjach wychowawca–osoba z niepełnosprawnością opisano przez odwołanie do rozumienia miłosierdzia jako rahămim (łono matki, i tej miłości, jaka towarzyszy matce wobec swojego dziecka). Podkreślono również, że w relacji wychowawczej, która podporządkowana jest zasadzie miłości miłosiernej, nie ma dobroczyńcy i „dobro-biorcy”, są dwie równe sobie w godności ludzkiej osoby, z których każda daje i otrzymuje miłosierdzie, chociaż o innym charakterze, w innej formie. Skupiono się również na problemach związanych z wychowaniem do miłosierdzia osób z niepełnosprawnością oraz koniecznością samowychowania w tym zakresie.

Mercy is the core of Christian morality and a prerequisite of Christian life. It may be expressed in words, deeds and prayer. The article presents a Christian view on the relations that occur in the care and education of persons with a disability (relations with parents, teachers, educators, therapists). The author presents examples of mercy revealed by God the Father and Christ and points to the crucial aspects in the preparation of educators to carrying out their tasks in the spirit of mercy. She also describes the essence and characteristic features of a merciful attitude of an educator (manifestations of active love and charity in practice). The practical implementation of mercy in the relations educator-person with a disability refers to understanding mercy in the context of rahămim – the mother’s womb – and the love that a mother has towards her child. Another key issue is that in the relation of education that is run by the rules of merciful love there is no benefactor and beneficiary, but there are two persons who are equal in human dignity, and each one of them gives and receives mercy, although in a different form. The paper also presents problems related to the education of persons with a disability towards mercy and to the necessity of self-education in this respect.
