The study compares two Czech language occasional compositions from the beginning of the 19th century: the text of a congratulatory cantata composed in 1811 in honour of Jan Nejedlý, professor of Czech language and literature at Prague University, by Václav Hanka, a student at Prague University and a representative of the second generation of the Czech National Revival, and a response to the cantata in verse by František Jan Vavák, a farmer well versed in literature and rooted in the traditions of the Czech Baroque patriotism. The study investigates the agreements and differences in the two author’s views on basic questions about past, present, and further directions in Czech culture.

Статья посвящена публикации и комментарию духовного силлабического стиха “Плач Адама” о рае по списку XVIII века из собрания Библиотеки Сыктывкарского государственного университета. Этот текст имеет особенности композиционного и идейного характера, отличные от традиционного текста “Плача Адама”, который известен в древнерусских рукописях со второй половины XV в. Он написан силлабическим стихом и представляет собой интересный образец «народной религиозной лирики» Нового времени.

The paper introduces the publication of and offers comments on “Adam’s Lament”, a spiritual syllabic poem from an eighteenth-century manuscript preserved in the Library of Syktyvkar State University. The text has a number of compositional and ideological characteristics distinguishing it from the traditional “Adam’s Lament” recorded in early Russian manuscripts dating from the second half of the 15th century or later. This syllabic verse is a notable example of the modern age religious folk poetry.

The main subject of this text is a description of the Polish and German theory of verse in comparison to the Czech research tradition. It deals in detail with the Polish concept of versification and presents possible reasons for the similarities and differences between Czech and Polish literary theory and practice in this field. The paper also considers other differences that have yet to be systematically investigated, as framed by the comparison of Czech and German theories of verse. A fundamental difference can be found in the use of the category of versification, and in a terminology strongly influenced by the tradition of accentual verse in the German tradition. The text also describes the evolution of versification in German literature from accentual to syllabotonic (accentual-syllabic), in contrast to Czech literature, which evolved from syllabic to syllabotonic versification.

The paper considers the picture of Russian literary life in the 18th century created in the works of Vladimir Peretz (1870−1935). Special attention is given to the perspective in which the scholar investigates this period and to the chronological boundaries of the period in question.
