In the article various aspects of functioning of coal mining branch in Poland have been discussed. In particular some obstacles to its activities and misconceptions of its role and management have been presented and discussed in detail. In author's opinion the recent fortunes of hard coal mining give evidence that the strategy of sustainable development is not implemented in Poland.

Przyszłość i rozwój energetyki to jeden z najważniejszych problemów zarówno w polityce krajowej, jak i światowej. Odpowiedzialność sektora energetycznego za zmiany klimatyczne na Ziemi oraz troska o zapewnienie wystarczających ilości energii w najbliższych latach stanowią główne wyzwania, jakie stoją obecnie przed energetyką. Obecnie trwają prace nad kolejną wersją dokumentu pt. „Polityka energetyczna Polski”. Powstający dokument powinien jasno wskazywać cele na najbliższe lata i pomóc w podejmowaniu decyzji inwestycyjnych w sektorze energetycznym. Obecnie gwarancją ciągłej pracy Krajowego Systemu Elektroenergetycznego jest energia elektryczna wytwarzana w elektrowniach parowych spalających węgiel. Eksploatowane w Polsce elektrownie węglowe są źródłem stabilnych i ciągłych dostaw energii. Idealnie sprawdzają się jako jednostki rezerwowe dla źródeł odnawialnych. W ostatnich latach rozwój energetyki konwencjonalnej znacząco wyhamował narażając kraj na niedostateczną rezerwę mocy. Wobec braku odpowiednich zdolności magazynowania energii, utrzymywanie w gotowości jednostek konwencjonalnych staje się w kontekście utrzymania bezpieczeństwa energetycznego kwestią kluczową. W artykule przedstawiono podstawowe informacje dotyczące strategii zrównoważonego rozwoju sektora energetycznego oraz ich wpływ na przyszły miks energetyczny.

Future and development of power generation is one of the most important problems both in domestic and world politics. Responsibility of the power sector for climate changes on the Earth and care of ensuring sufficient amount of energy in the coming years are the main challenges facing now the energy industry. Work is currently in progress on another version of the document “Energy Policy of Poland” and the one being developed now should clearly indicate the goals for the coming years and help to make investment decisions in the power sector. The guarantee now of the Polish Power System continuous work is electric energy generated in the coal-fired power plants which are the source of stable and uninterrupted energy supplies. They are also proving to be valuable back-up units for the ones basing on renewable sources. During the last several years the development of conventional power generation have significalntly decelerated exposing our country to the threat of an insufficient power reserves. So, in the absence of operative energy storage capacity, maintaining the conventional energy generation units in standby becomes – in the context of energy safety – a key issue. Presented are here basic informations concerning the power sector sustained development strategies and their influence on the future energy mix.

Idea zielonego kampusu, która coraz silniej jednoczy światową społeczność akademicką, stała się przedmiotem zintegrowanych prac studialnych i projektowych studentów Wydziału Architektury Politechniki Wrocławskiej. Na tym tle przedstawiono propozycje rozwoju uczelni jako miasteczka wiedzy o cechach modelowych dla zrównoważonej struktury urbanistycznej. Celem strategii jest optymalne wykorzystanie posiadanych terenów, budynków oraz kapitału ludzkiego − zarówno w świetle potrzeb własnych Uczelni, jak i w kontekście potrzeb miasta i regionu. Propozycje rozwiązań nawiązują do paradygmatu zrównoważonego rozwoju, uwzględniając aspekty przyrodnicze, techniczne, społeczne oraz przestrzenne. Punktem wyjścia jest założenie, że miasto jutra buduje się dzisiaj, bazując na dziedzictwie przeszłości, realnych środkach i mając na uwadze wyzwania globalne.

The idea of a green campus, which gradually unites the global academic community, has been the subject of the student integrated study and design works at the Faculty of Architecture of the Wroclaw University of Technology. Against this background, the author sets out proposals for the development of the university as a city of knowledge and the model of a sustainable urban unit. The aim of the strategy is the optimal use of the available land, buildings and human capital that will serve both the University purposes and the needs of the city and the region. Presented solutions refer to the paradigm of sustainable development, taking into account the natural, technical, social and spatial aspects. The starting point is the assumption that the city of tomorrow is built today, based on the legacy of the past, the real measures and the global challenges.

Sustainable Development Indicators are the main tool for monitoring of the EU Sustainable Development Strategy. The aim of this paper is to indicate strategic conditions for monitoring sustainable development as well as to evaluate the current system of indicators for monitoring of the EU Sustainable Development Strategy. This paper presents also a synthetic assessment of the progress of sustainable development in the European Union on the basis of headline indicators. Based on the statistical results, a positive trend can only be observed in the case of headline indicators related to following themes of the SDI framework "demographic change" and "climate change and energy", while the lack of significant improvement in the direction of more sustainable development shows the headline indicator in the field "social inclusion" . Monitoring methodology and continuous updating of data collection at EU level creates new challenges for the development of new indicators. The results indicate the need for further improvement of the measurement and control of the action for sustainable development.

Wskaźniki zrównoważonego rozwoju stanowią podstawowe narzędzie monitoringu Strategii Zrównoważonego Rozwoju Unii Europejskiej. Celem artykułu jest zatem wskazanie strategicznych uwarunkowań dotyczących monitorowania zrównoważonego rozwoju oraz ocena obecnego systemu wskaźników służących do monitorowania europejskiej Strategii Zrównoważonego Rozwoju. W oparciu o dane statystyczne, pozytywny trend można zaobserwować jedynie w przypadku wskaźników głównych, dotyczących obszarów: „zmiany demograficzne”, a także „zmiany klimatu oraz energia”, natomiast brak wyraźnej poprawy w kierunku bardziej zrównoważonego rozwoju pokazuje wskaźnik główny z obszaru „włączenie społeczne”. Metodologia monitorowania i ciągła aktualizacja zbioru danych na poziomie UE stwarza nowe wyzwania dla rozwoju nowych wskaźników. Przedstawione wyniki wskazują na konieczność dalszego doskonalenia pomiaru i kontroli rezultatów zastosowanych działań.
