The results of the studies of two bentonites: UKJ (Ukraine) and Black Hill (a standard stabilizer of suspension fertilisers in the USA) are presented. The phase composition of the bentonites was analysed by the X-ray diffraction (XRD) method using a Philips PW1050 X'Change diffractometer. The electrokinetic (zeta) potential of the mineral-water mixture was measured in order to determine the stability of such a suspension. On the basis of the obtained results the phase composition of the tested substances and the stability of the mineral-buffer solution system were evaluated.
