We studied the acute effects of crude oil on the size-class population structure of the cladoceran Daphnia magna. D. magna were tested in three size-classes: small (1.4 mm, SE = 0.013), medium (2.5 mm, SE = 0.026), and large (3.1 mm, SE = 0.022) with six concentrations of crude oil (10, 50, 100, 400, 600, and 1700 mg L-1). The most important results of our experiment were as follows: (1) Crude oil had no significantly effect on D. magna below concentration 100 mg L-1. (2) An increasing crude oil concentration above 100 mg L-1 sharply decreased the survival of D. magna, (3) and survival varied among size classes. Being in contact with the concentration of 400 mg L-1 and above, all cladoceran specimens died after 96 h.

Telomerase, undetectable in normal somatic cells, plays a critical role in carcinogenesis of the majority of human tumors including lung carcinoma. The aim of our study was to determine human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) mRNA expression in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in order to estimate its usefulness as diagnostic and/or prognostic factor. hTERT expression was analyzed in a group of 12 females and 28 males with NSCLC using Quantitative Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (QRT-PCR method) in cancerous and non-cancerous lung tissues. Results were analyzed according to clinical data and one-, two-, and five-year survival rates. hTERT expression in the cancerous tissue was significantly higher than in the lung parenchyma free from neoplasm infiltration (p<0.05). There was no significant association between hTERT expression in the tumor tissue and age, gender, grading or clinical stage. A significant difference in hTERT expression between two types of histopathological patterns (adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma) was detected (p=0.01). No association between hTERT expression in NSCLC specimens and survival rates was found. hTERT mRNA detection by QRT-PCR in tumor and corresponding cancer-free tissues can be used as a diagnostic marker in patients with NSCLC, but seems not to be a prognostic factor.

The natural occurrence of the shrimp (Penaeus monodon Fabricius, 1798) and seagrass (Cymodocea rotundata Asch. & Schweinf.) is found in the area of Indian Ocean, Indonesia, for central Pacific. Vibriosis can cause death in larvae, juvenile and adult shrimp almost close to 100%. Antibacterial substances from secondary metabolites are produced by plants and animals to reduce the use of synthetic antibiotics. The purpose of this research was to determine the ability of secondary metabolites contained in the bacterial extract of the association of sea grass Cymodocea rotundata (isolate code BA.1) to treat vibriosis in tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon). This research was conducted at the Laboratory of Integrated Biotechnology and Laboratory of Aquaculture, Fisheries and Marine Sciences Faculty, Universitas Padjadajaran, and at the Brackish and Southern Ocean Aquaculture Development Center Pangandaran, from June to September 2018. The research method used was experimental, with completely randomized design (CRD) consisting of five treatments with three replications including; control treatment (concentration of 0 mg·L–1), 150 mg.L–1, 300 mg·L–1, 450 mg·L–1 and 600 mg·L–1. Observations made include clinical symptoms (morphology, behavior) and survival rate. Clinical symptoms of infected tiger shrimp during the in vivo test were red spots on the abdomen and necrosis of some leg and tail segments. The behavior of tiger shrimp mostly shows less responsive movements to fish-feed on the first day, and showing responsive and active behavior on the fifth day. In vivo test results for 14 days showed that the highest survival rate of 51.67% was in case of the addition of antibacterial extracts of BA.1 with a concentration of 300 mg·L–1.

This study was conducted to determine the effect of probiotic addition in commercial feed to the growth and survival rate of Sangkuriang catfish (Clarias gariepinus). This research was conducted at the Ciparanje Experimental Pond Laboratory, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, Universitas Padjadjaran, Jatinangor, West Java. The method in used this research was Completely Randomized Design with four treatments and four replications. The treatment was the variances of probiotic addition which consisted of control (without probiotics), probiotic addition at as much as 0.5 grams / kg of feed, 1 gram / kg of feed and 1.5 grams / kg of feed. The parameters observed were specific growth rate (SGR), absolute biomass, survival rate (SR) and feed conversion ratio (FCR). Data were analyzed using Variant Analysis, at 95% confidence level, and continued with Duncan's Multiple Range Test. The results showed that the increase in the daily growth rate of Sangkuriang catfish was straight-line with the addition of probiotics. Furthermore, commercial probiotics with a dose of 1 gram / kg of feed resulted in specific growth rate of 4.22%, absolute weight of 11 grams, survival rate (SR) of 97.5% and FCR of 0.89.

Sewage sludge constitutes a source of valuable biogenic raw materials, but it is a carrier of many pathogenic microorganisms and viruses. Subjected to an effective sanitization by means of the process of composting, it is suitable to use in agriculture as fertilizers. The aim of this study was to observe the survival rate of Suid Herpesvirus under the influence of the temperature alone (water bath) as well as in sewage sludge subjected to the process of composting (pile). The samples were taken at different time intervals, and the virus titres were determined. The viruses survived considerably longer under laboratory conditions: at 30°C as long as 21 days, at 40°C - 93 hours, and at 50°C - less than an hour. In the compost pile, in spite of the lack of the thermophylic phase, the total survival time of the viruses ranged from 34 to 44.5 hours, which indicates the vast importance of other physicochemical factors, apart from the temperature, contributing to virus inactivation.

Survival and hazard functions supply suitable information concerning changes in the population dynamics, especially in the case of species that are not subjected to artificial selection. One of such species is David’s deer (Elaphurus davidianus Milne-Edwards, 1866) that underwent a dramatic reduction in the population size in the first years of the XX century, but has been subsequently restored from 18 individuals.Population dynamics changes were studied on 1221 David’s deers kept in zoological gardens in the years 1947-2001. Survival and hazard functions were constructed for all individuals according to sex, and separately for those which died in the first year of life, i.e. 14.5% males and 8% females. The hazard function showed similar values for individuals of both sexes in the year 6, 10, 15, 17 and 18 of life. For all males the medians for mortality (hazard function) appeared similar to those for all females. Similar pattern was shown for yearlings. However, between day 40 and 323 shapes of these functions were quite different. Generally, the life span in females was found longer than in males.

Funkcje przeżycia i hazardu dostarczają cennych informacji o dynamice liczebności populacji,zwłaszcza w odniesieniu do gatunków nie poddawanych sztucznej selekcji. Badaniami objęto 1221 osobników jelenia Dawida, jakie utrzymywano w latach 1947-2001 w ogrodach zoologicznych świata.Gatunek ten przeżył drastyczne załamanie liczebności w pierwszych latach XX wieku, a następnie został odtworzony z 18 osobników uchronionych przed zagładą. Aczkolwiek w przypadku osobników będących w 6, 10, 15, 17 i 18 roku życia funkcja hazardu przyjęła dla obu płci wartości podobne, to jednak generalnie samice żyły dłużej niż samce.

The estimation of demographic rates is important for conservation and management of species. However, with the exception of an estimate for adult survival by Humphrey and Cope in 1977, there are no estimates of any demographic rates for the endangered Indiana myotis (Myotis sodalis). Their estimate is based on techniques that have been replaced by newer, more flexible, and less biased techniques. Therefore, we reanalyzed a subset of the data first analyzed by Humphrey and Cope using a Cormack-Jolly-Seber model. Two models [φ(year)p(year) and φ(year)p(sex*year)] are equally parsimonious, so we used model averaging to estimate apparent survival. We used this estimate to calculate the average cumulative survival each year after banding for four un-aged cohorts. Our estimate suggests that apparent survival is considerably higher than estimated by Humphrey and Cope the first year after banding and lower the second year after banding. Subsequent to the first two years after banding, our estimates are similar, but slightly lower than those reported by Humphrey and Cope. These results, while useful, cannot be taken as true survival rates for Indiana myotis because of limitations in the data and we suggest this estimate be used appropriately when making management decisions. We discuss limitations in this type of data and make suggestions for experimental design of future studies to collect data more appropriate for estimation of demographic rates in bats.

The purpose of this work was to quantify the impact of spontaneous and X-radiation-induced chromosome rearrangements on survival rate of androgenetic rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Various doses of X irradiation (50, 150, 250, 350 Gy) were used for inactivation of nuclear DNA in oocytes. After the irradiation, eggs were inseminated with normal sperm from 4 males derived from a strain characterized by Robertsonian rearrangements and length polymorphism of the Y chromosome. The haploid zygotes were exposed to a high hydrostatic pressure (7000 psi) to duplicate the paternal DNA. Neither Robertsonian chromosome polymorphism nor the Y chromosome morphology impaired the viability of the androgenetic embryos and alevins. Moreover, survival of eyed embryos of the androgenetic rainbow trout increased significantly with increasing doses of oocyte X irradiation. After 6 months of rearing, only specimens from the 250 and 350 Gy variants survived. The number of fingerlings with remnants of the maternal genome in the forms of chromosome fragments was higher in the 250 Gy group. Intraindividual variation of chromosome fragment number was observed, and some individuals exhibited haploid/diploid mosaicism and body malformations. Individuals irradiated with less than 250 Gy died, presumably because of the conflict between intact paternally derived chromosomes and the residues of maternal genome in the form of chromosome fragments.

The number of ground-nesting bird species in meadows, one of the most vulnerable habitats in the ornithological reserve of Vrana Lake Nature Park has decreased in recent decades. Nest survival rates were investigated in meadows and reed beds using nest predation experiments in late March and in May 2005. Predators damaged 18% of the 50 artificial nests placed in the pasture meadow habitat in March and 22% in May. Daily survival rate of nests were found to be similar in March (97%) and May (96%). In May, 64% of 25 nests located in the reed bed were discovered by the predators, with the daily survival rate of nests (90%) being significantly lower than that of nests in the nearby meadow. The results suggest that the reasons for the decreasing number of nesting bird species may be - instead of the pronounced presence and activity of predators in the area - the shrinkage of meadow area, the lack of buffer zone, the proximity of agricultural lands, and disturbance caused by intensive grazing.

Survival rates of Campylobacter jejuni ATCC 33 291, Campylobacter jejuni PZH 38 and Campylobacter coli ATCC 43 478 in leg quarters (ca 330g) of chicken broilers after microwave heating (480 and 760 Watt) for 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 minutes were determined. Heating the meat in a microwave oven (Moulinex, type Dialog cook) at 480 Watts caused a gradual decrease in the number of cells of the studied bacterial strains to total inactivation after 8 – 10 minutes of heating. Increasing the heating power to 760 Watts led to a decreased microwave heating time of 6 – 8 minutes for inactivation of all the cells of the studied C. jejuni/coli strains. These findings clearly indicate the dependence of effectiveness of inactivation of the bacteria studied on microwave heating power, heating duration and bacterial strain.

This study aims to see the condition of hematocrit levels and differential leukosit after immersion in LAB isolated and after in vivo, using Aeromonas hydrophila bacterium. LAB isolated were obtained from the organs of the common carp intestine. The study used a Completely Randomized Design (RAL) consisting of four treatments and three replications. The treatment used was immersion of test fish for 24 hours in several isolates of LAB with a density of 108, namely A: without LAB isolate (control), B: isolate CcB7, C: isolate CcB8, D: isolate CcB15. Immersion was done three times, with a frequency of seven days. Parameters observed included hematocrit levels, leukocyte differentiation and survival rate. The results showed that immersion in LAB isolate CcB15 will enhance the differential leukocytes and hematocrit levels that serve as indicators of carp body resistance, which is shown by high levels of white and red blood cells.

Neuroepidemiology is a discipline assessing the impact of environmental and genetic factors on the incidence and development of diseases of the nervous system and describes their prevalence and distribution. The basic epidemiological parameters in multiple sclerosis (MS) are the indices of prevalence, incidence, morbidity and mortality, disease duration and mean age at onset. First epidemiological studies concerning MS date back to the twenties the XX century. Prevalence indices worldwide vary from 15 to 180 per 100 000 persons; in northern Europe the mean index is 83 per 100 000 and in Poland – 45- 92 per 100 000. Incidence indices vary depending on geographic location: in Europe it varies from 3.5 to 5.5 per 100 000, while in Poland they vary from 2.4 (Szczecin) to 4.3 (Gniezno). Based on these data it may be assumed that 1300- 2100 new cases are being diagnosed in Poland each year. In females, the prevalence of MS is about two- fold higher than in males. Mean age of onset in the Lublin region is 30.1 years and in the Szczecin region – 36.49 years in males and 34.16 years in females. It is estimated that 10- years’ survival rate (from the time of diagnosis) is 90- 95%, 20- years’ survival rate – 70- 75%, 30- years’ survival rate – 50- 65% and 40- years’ survival rate – 35- 55%. Mean life duration in males and in females was similar and in 1998 amounted to 52.3 and 51.8 years, respectively. Patients with late- onset MS usually survive shorter. In 58% of the patients, the disease takes a relapsing- remitting form, in 27% – secondary progressive, in 9% – primary progressive and in 6% – progressive‑relapsing. A more severe course may be expected in late- onset cases, in those with high index of relapses in the initial years of the disease and in those with pronounced demyelinating lesions in MRI scans. On the average, disability increases by 0.3- 0.5 EDSS grade per year.

Średnie długości życia u mężczyzn i kobiet w Polsce były zbliżone i wyniosły w 1998 roku odpowiednio 52,3 i 51,8 roku. U osób z późniejszym początkiem SM czas przeżycia jest zazwyczaj krótszy. U 58% pacjentów choroba ma postać rzutowo- remisyjną, u 27% – wtórnie postępującą, u 9% – pierwotnie postępującą, a u 6% – postępująco-nawracającą. Gorszy przebieg SM występuje u chorych z późniejszym początkiem, a także u pacjentów z wysokim wskaźnikiem rzutów w pierwszych latach choroby i nasilonymi zmianami demielinizacyjnymi w badaniu NMR. Średnio niepełnosprawność wzrasta o 0,3- 0,5 stopnia EDSS na rok.
