There are results of Pitot probe measurements of velocities at the outlet of the formed suction intake, with and without the rib. There are given conclusions of the comparative analysis of numerical computations and Pitot probe measurements. In the article there are also pressure measurements and the observation of surface vortices. These results may constitute the basis of verification of the unsteady flow computation method, for formed suction intakes.

In the article, there are introduced results of numerical computations of unsteady flow in the intake of large vertical pumps verified by results of the measurements made on the test stand. Comparative analysis of results of numerical computations, pressure measurements and the observation of surface vortices, have confirmed the justness of a chosen computational method.

A concept of the formed suction intake design obtained with an algorithm for vertical axial{ ow pumps is presented. The design methodology is a part of works conducted within project no. N N513 460240 supported by the Polish National Science Center. The proposed procedure is used to optimize intakes. The results of steady ow numerical computations in the suction intake as well as applications of the design optimization in the aspect of ful lling two objective functions are discussed. The objective functions given by the authors concern the optimal in ow of the uid into the impeller.
Przedstawiono procedurę projektowania, w której w celu optymalizacji komór ssawnych pomp wykorzystuje się wyniki obliczeń numerycznych przepływu ustalonego w komorze ssawnej oraz aplikacje metod optymalizacji konstrukcji w aspekcie realizacji przyjętych funkcji celu. Zaproponowane przez autorów funkcje celu dotyczą optymalnego napływu czynnika na wirnik.

Proposed design procedure is a coherent method in which to optimize intakes there are used numerical steady flow computation results for the suction intake and applications for methods of construction optimization in the aspect of realization of objective functions. Proposed by the authors, objective functions concern the optimal liquid inflow at the pump impeller.
