The paper presents a formal account of sentences with a numeral-nominal subject and an adjectival complement, such as Tych pięciu facetów zostało zabitych ‘These five guys were killed’. The agreements in such sentences are highly idiosyncratic. To cope with them in the framework of a certain formal grammar of Polish, a number of extra means are proposed: special “numeral” realization of the nominal phrase in subject position, special “plural” adjectival complement, special rules that introduce the adjectival phrase in genitive, special valence frames for such strange phrases, and, finally, a special mechanism of interphrasal gender-number agreements. The paper argues for individual treatment of idiosyncrasies, instead of an artificial account in terms of general principles.

The paper discusses the problem of identification of a special type of modern Polish verbs that do not inflect for person. In the literature, they are known as czasowniki niewłaściwe, literally ‘improper verbs’, but the descriptions of their various interpretations lead to the conclusion that they can be no longer equated with verbs uninflected for person. The author proposes that the criterion of syntactic position of the subject can be used in their identification.

The author of the article suggests reading Dorota Masłowska’s debut novel Wojna polsko-ruska pod flagą biało-czerwoną from the perspective of the feminist literary critics. She uses Nancy K. Miller’s concept of arachnology. The author concentrates on parts of the novel that have been overlooked so far in reviews and interpretations. She examines a character in the book, a young girl, who is the author’s alter ego. The auctorial subject is revealed on different levels in the text: as a character in the novel, the author of the text that is being read and in a monologue of the narrator, Silny, whose narration is influenced by elements beyond his own consciousness and language. The experience of growing mature and writing is developed in the plot, through the consciousness of the main character and only revealed gradually. It is at the end of the novel that the author finally gives up the mask of the character and speaks for herself.

This essay attempts at finding the essential connection between theory of discourse and the Michał Heller’s writing strategy. Some fundamental concepts of Michael Foucault become very stimulative in light of Heller’s vision of connecting disciplines (physics/cosmology, theology/religion, philosophy). The aim of this article is also to reveal the problems of using narrow meanings of some concepts (especially “institution”, “authority”).

The aim of the article is to present Marek Siemek’s interpretation of modernity, fo-cusing on problems related to understanding of the modern subject that arose (and still arise) from the reading of Max Horkheimer and Theodor W. Adorno’s Dialectic of Enlightenment. Siemek seems to endorse a general drive of Habermas’ theory of inter-subjective communication intended to overcome the dialectics of Enlightenment and to complete the project of modernity. However, his position is that its foundation can be traced back to the philosophies of Fichte and Hegel and their mutually complementary intersubjectivity models. Siemek seeks to reconcile the idea of the philosophy of inter-subjectivity underlying Fichte’s and Hegel’s philosophies with the tenets of the philo-sophy of consciousness.

Functionally-oriented linguistic theories, such as cognitive grammar (CG), offer nuanced descriptions of the meanings and uses of grammatical features. A simplified characterization of the semantics of the English active and passive voice grounded in CG terms and based on the reference point model is presented, as it is the basis of the instructional treatment offered to one of the groups in the quasiexperimental study reported in the paper. The study compares the effects of feature- focused grammatical instruction covering the form and meaning/use of the English voices based on CG with those of teaching based on standard pedagogical grammar rules. The results point to relatively high effectiveness of both instructional options in fostering the use of the target structures in both more controlled and more spontaneous performance, with traditional instruction being more successful than that based on CG with respect to the latter. A possible explanation of this superiority is that the subset of the participants (n = 27) exposed to the traditional explanations found them simple and easy to apply, contrary to the situation in the other group.

The system of athlete - a combination educational influences during a focused multi-training process, contributing to the development of a general human and moral qualities of the person, and the formation of the specific condition of the young man (athlete) required to achieve a high competitive performance in the sport. However, poorly disclosed the role of teaching factors in sports training system, which in addition to learning motor tasks actions enable the organization to promote sports activities personality. As a general trend, with domestic practice sports higher achievements, you can select that athletes have emerged in the minds of the validity of their sporting discipline, and which are at the stages to realize individual potential and preservation of high sports significantly more independent in their actions and decision-making. Sports activities formed to the extent of becoming an athlete person under the laws of transformation of quantitative changes in the new quality. To manage this transition, we must understand: it something like the effort of thinking parents «put up» their children, although in doing so they lose them, because figuratively speaking, become useless young shoots. The process of formation of the person which is in question begins with the formation of an athlete who already understand their responsibility for the final result image «itself in the desired future». You need to imagine what kind of person to whom an athlete I would see myself. If the image with the help of a coach or other adult family created by a reliable guide not only for sports activities, but also a person of life. Sports activity is remarkable such as thinking and controlled by a person's own activity as a skilled athlete is not only able to take responsibility for their own behavior, given the following training and competition, but also exercise the right here and now, initiative and resourcefulness to ensure the achievement (and repetition) competitive desired result.

‘Being with oneself in the other’ is a well-known formula that Hegel uses to characterize the basic relation of subjective freedom. This phrase points to the fact that subjects can only come to themselves if they remain capable of going beyond themselves. This motif also plays a significant role in Hegel’s philosophy of art. The article further develops this motif by exploring the extent to which this polarity of selfhood and otherhood is also characteristic of states of aesthetic freedom. It does not offer an exegesis of Hegel’s writings, but attempts to remain as close as possible to the spirit of Hegel’s philosophy – with some help from Kant and Adorno. The argument begins with some key terms on the general state of subjective freedom in order to distinguish it from the particular role of aesthetic freedom and then, finally, drawing again on Hegel, works out the sense in which aesthetic freedom represents an important variant of freedom.

The aim of this contribution is to introduce panpsychist motifs in the philosophy of Ladislav Hejdánek and to compare them with some other contemporary trends in the philosophy of mind, primarily that of David Chalmers. Hejdánek’s system remarkably fuses a continental understanding for the theme of subjectivity with a critique of the objectifying approach to reality prevailing in the natural science. Hejdánek starts from original ideas of G. W. Leibniz, A. N. Whitehead, P. Teilhard de Chardin, and most of all E. Rádl. The article seeks to show that Hejdánek’s considerations can even be inspirational for the contemporary global debate of this topic. In addition to the currently familiar texts, it builds on hitherto unpublished Diary of Ideas of Ladislav Hejdánek.

The presented study focuses on the issue of wine growing in the environment of the serfsʼ farming on the Mělník estate in Early Modern times. The main objective of the paper, which is primarily based on an analysis of land and vineyard registers, was to characterise the structure and the range of the profits from wine growing. Research has shown that wine revenues, which were of great importance to some local growers, were of a dual type. The basis formed the vineyards as integral constituents of the economy of serfs. Their expansion was far from being negligible in the conditions of an estate, and accounted for almost a quarter of the serfsʼ domains. The second type of profits from serfsʼ wine growing was known as perkrecht, which the subjects did not manage although it was the source of regular wages.

Anna, Another and the Excluded are the main characters in Zbigniew Kruszyński’s stories: Schwedenkrauter, Na lądach i morzach and Powrót Aleksandra. Anna reveals the true colors of reality – where men nostalgically long for an archetypical image of love; Another becomes a substitute for the lost woman and then starts transforming into No¬ one; the Excluded represent a cursed piece of reality. Their peculiar features, habits and activities create a controversial and unconventional picture. The writer’s style complicates the reader’s view even more: voyeurism determines perception here. These characters are not only subjects of artistic depiction, but also lenses through which readers are watching or (together with the narrator) taking a peek at the world.

The article proposes an interpretation of the Letters of St. Paul based on Heidegger's early lectures. It introduces the notion of excess. Excess (nad-miar) is not only the opposite of what can be measured (miara); it is above all something that exceeds measurement, though in an immeasurable (bez-mierne) way. Excess expresses the actual infinity of the subject while the “immeasurable” expresses his potential infinity. This difference between the immeasurable and excess is visible in the context of messianic temporality. Those who await a temporal messiah treat him as an extension of the immeasurable world of their own expectations. Christians do not expect a specific event; for them treating God as a third person is senseless. Their concept of God arose in the temporality in which all things are accomplished in accordance with Paul's motto, "Stay alert, stand firm in the faith, show courage, be strong. Everything you do should be done in love." (1 Cor 16:13-14). This is a subjective figure for taking responsibility for living, thinking and acting, which are to take place in love and expresses a revolution, for such subjective figures change the very character of Christian life.

The problem sketched here in a non-conformist phenomenological manner concerns the transition from the theory of the self-sufficient individual to the theories of the social character of human being, and to the theoretical possibility to control the social asym-metries opposing to its fulfilment.

Content available remote My Own Body as a Form of Otherness in Paul Ricoeur's Philosophy

The philosophical rehabilitation of the body and corporeality, as undertaken by Paul Ricoeur, may be inscribed as a critique of the model of modern subjectivity as prefigured in the Cartesian Cogito of self-consciousness, self-awareness and substantial identity. This dominating paradigm of thinking cannot be preserved any longer in the face of Nietzsche and Freud, as well as of contemporary linguistics. This model reduced corporeality as a residuum of what is other than I to a handy object of scientific and technological exploration. Whereas, according to Ricoeur, otherness is not something that only accidentally happens to ego. It is not an unessential element and a negative aspect of a subject's and person's identity. Becoming oneself and understanding oneself take place in the medium of the Other. Otherness is for the identity of human ego something internal and originary, reaching us in a sphere of what is truly our own. The hermeneutics of being oneself, rejecting an appearance and the temptation of direct cognition, consists in the analysis of three figures of Otherness, which seem to be consecutively: my own body, the Other and Conscience.Under the influence of the Husserlian distinction of "my own body" and "a body among other bodies", as well as the Heideggerian existentials describing "being-in-the-world", Ricoeur postulates, in a way similarly to Marcel and Merleau-Ponty, a reinterpretation of traditional understanding of both subjectivity and objectivity, as well as the very cognitive act of doing so. Its pre-reflexive foundation was uncovered by existential hermeneutics. The phenomena of being a body and having it appear to be problematic to the utmost, thus opening access to originary relationships between a man and the world as a correlation of bodily intentionality.

In the paper, Subject and Identity in the Philosophy of Paul Ricoeur, the author attemptsto draw readers attention to two important elements of the philosophy of Paul Ricoeur,i.e. subjectivity and identity. It is a matter of recognised fact that the French philosopherdeveloped a very interesting argumentation within these fields, which is why the authortries to follow Ricoeur’s position, on the one hand, showing evolution from the subject tothe concept of person, and on the other hand, from the concept of human identity to narrativeidentity. It appears to the author that the two concepts play a crucial role in Ricoeur’sphilosophical anthropology.

In her article author brings up a popular in the humanities sphere theme of subject and subjectivity. She tries though to show its particularity as regards pedagogy. Pedagogical formulation of this subject-matter particular value comes from the fact that pedagogy is ambitious to conceive the humanity and the upbringing process in integral way. It means that also the categories of subject and subjectivity get the pedagogical dimension when they are not offering services to any conceptions that reduce humanity only to certain dimensions - for instance: consciousness or unconsciousness, spirituality or carnality or else emotions etc. A proposition respecting this integral conceive of humanity is the conception of human person presented by Karol Wojtyla. The category of act is of great importance in it. An act - in the grasp of Wojtyla - surpasses a lot a normal activity, it has a power to spread across both the dynamism of conscious action and the strength of what ‘happens inside’ of a human being. That is the human act which seems to explain a human being and his subjectivity in the best way. The present article tries to substantiate this argument.

The paper discusses the idea of a colonised subject that emerged out of the legal process and the social realities that gave it a social context. The colonized subject was at times reduced to a criminal category — and at other times even excised out of history; in either case, the process embodied the complexities and ambiguities of the role of law in the process of colonial power and its state project. This essay seeks to point to some of these instances and in the process make a case for revisiting the social history of law, or in other words for assessing the relationship of law to wider social relations. The colonial state had to compete with other sources of traditional authority and entitlement about the right to take life of oneself or of others. The paper refers to some specific instances of state intervention and of defining criminality, but not to project a sense of the exceptional about Indian society but to draw attention to precisely those areas of ambiguity that made colonial law a complex project fraught with tensions and ambiguities. The failure to condemn certain practices outright and the tendency to conflate religion with custom and tradition had the effect of pathologising India as the site of permanent difference and of condemning the Indian subject to an always deferred state of reform and improvement.

W artykule omówiono pojęcie podmiotu skolonizowanego, które wyłoniło się w toku procesu prawnego oraz z rzeczywistości społecznej, która nadała mu kontekst społeczny. W niektórych przypadkach podmiot skolonizowany sprowadzano do przestępcy, w innych wymazywano wręcz z kart historii. W obu przypadkach proces ten odzwierciedlał złożoność i niejasność roli prawa w procesie wykonywania władzy kolonialnej i w przyjętym projekcie państwa.
