The article is an attempt to utilize the pre-philosophical etymological meanings of the word subject in a proposal for the reflection that fits into the discussion on the possibilities of new posthumanistic approaches to the matter of subject. Its first part comprises etymological inquiry, inspired by the philosophy of M. Heidegger and the proposal of K.Okopien, into the Greek word ὑποκείμενον, the Latin subiectum and the Polish podmiot. In the second part, three new, ethically oriented proposals for perceiving the problem in the perspective of studying animals have been derived from the three former meanings of the Polish subject – a foundling, fraud, and bedding.

Security is one of the basic needs of a human being, social groups and society. It is the basic category assigned to most of the subjects of human recognition. It can be defined in many ways depending on the way the subject is perceived and the needs of given discipline. Each scientific discipline has got its specific cognitive approach, it examines security with specific methods and describes results with specific language. Such situation implies the need for creating common plane for security cognizance as a universal category. Having a commonly agreed upon language for describing security is needed to describe in an understandable way research results, to communicate with one another, to have the knowledge about security transposed in the contents of education as well as into practice.
