The stronghold called St. Peter’s hill in Radom is located in the centre of the city, in an area severely degraded by the side effects of 19th- and 20th-century industrialisation. The archaeological excavations and paleoecological research carried out in 2009–2013 created a background for studying its complex past and designing the future. The biography of St. Peter’s hill encompasses the early medieval power centre, late medieval urbanisation, nineteenth-century industrialisation, subsequent degradation of material and human resources, and present revitalisation projects. This place is far more than an archaeological site or even a part of archaeological heritage. It is a unique cultural landscape, which emerged as a result of long-lasting mutual relations between man and nature. Its materiality constitutes an inalienable cultural capital, indispensable for the reconstruction of local identities and communities of memory

In the Valley of the Chodelka River (tributary of the Vistula River) located in the west part of the Lublin region, in close proximity to each other four early medieval strongholds, dated for 8–12th c. are located. The largest of them is located in the village of Chodlik, Karczmiska municipality, founded in 8th c. It is one of the largest and oldest early Slavic defensive for¬tifications in Poland. In its immediate vicinity smaller strongholds were built in 8–10th c. in Żmijowiska and Kłodnica, Wilkow municipality. The last one, most likely performing the function of a watchtower castle in Podgórze, Wilków municipality is located on a high Vistula escarpment at the mouth of the Chodelka River. The article discusses issues related to the construction and support base of stronglods in Chodelka River basin, their functions and mutual connections. An attempt was made to reconstruct the settlement transforma¬tions that took place in the region in the early Middle Ages.

The research concerned transformations of soils in the areas of Early-Medieval strongholds and connected differences in floristic composition between forest communities from strongholds and non-synanthropic habitats. The study focused on two areas where Early-Medieval strongholds were situated – Gronowo and Płutowo (Chełmińska Upland, Northern Poland) – surrounded by various types of soils: rusty soils and black earths, respectively. Detailed pedological and floristic-phytosociological investigations were carried out in the sites and their vicinity. Transformations of Tilio-Carpinetum corydaletosumphytocoenoses were performed with respect to the specificity of soils at the settlements and their anthropogenic enrichment in biogenic elements (C, N, P) to a considerable depth.

Badania dotyczyły przekształcenia gleb w miejscach dawnego osadnictwa i związane z nimi różnice w składzie gatunkowym fitocenoz z grodzisk i siedlisk naturalnych. Do badań wybrano wczesnośredniowieczne grodziska w Gronowie i Płutowie (ziemia chełmińska, północna Polska),w otoczeniu których występują różne typy gleb, odpowiednio: gleby rdzawe i czarne ziemie.

The article concerns the early medieval settlement at Niedźwiedź/Steklin located on Lake Steklin in the Dobrzyń Land commonly identified with the castrum Steclyn mentioned in the so-called Mogilno Falsification of 1065. Although research has up to now produced relatively little information on the stronghold itself, numerous luxury items discovered on the lake bottom within the remains of the wharves, as well as a silver hoard recently found in a suburbium settlement testify to the special importance of this place on the northeastern border of the Piast state. The article discusses the origins and functions of the stronghold, as well as its role in the local supra-local settlement structure. It is also shown that its location directly on the long-distance route leading from Gniezno through Mogilno and Kujawy to Prussia enabled communication with Benedictine monks.

The aim of the article is the formal analysis of the jewellery artefacts found during the archaeological research conducted at the stronghold in Owidz, with particular emphasis on the decorations discovered during the work carried out by the Institute of Archaeology of the University of Gdańsk in 2017, 2019, 2021. The latter artefacts were also subjected to technological analyses, which yielded interesting results. To date, 19 women's decorations have been discovered on the site in Owidz, which is one of the largest jewellery collections discovered so far at the Pomeranian strongholds. This collection can be dated to the 11th–12th centuries. Among the jewellery items, earrings, silver-plated S-shaped temple rings (B III), pendants, carnelian and amber bead, as well as band-shaped rings and rings with a motif imitating two intertwined wires. In the discussed collection a variant of completely preserved earring with cylindrical beads, which has not a direct analogy to date is worth paying special attention. Also an unfinished temple ring, which is a semi-finished product from a local goldsmith's workshop seems to be very interesting.

The paper New Data for Research on the Cuiavian Strongholds from Mietlica and Borkowo concerns issues of archaeology and the protection of monuments. It briefly discusses the state of hitherto research and knowledge on the strongholds in Mietlica and Borkowo. Then there follows a thorough analysis of aerial photographs (made by Łukasz Oliwkowski) of both these defensive premises. e discussion is separately completed with data acquired in consequence of subsequent surveys of the strongholds in Mietlica and Borkowo, carried out in the years 2007–2014. In the case of the castrum in Mietlica, the aerial photos and field surveys allowed for the recording of traces of the area in front of the rampart, the moat and the gate. Furthermore, a putative course of the eastern rampart (now levelled) of this premise was identified. In the case of the stronghold in Borkowo, it was possible not only to record its shape (the premise is two thirds destroyed) but also to propose a daring supposition concerning the vicinity of this Early Medieval stronghold. Based on aerial photographs, it was possible to state that the stronghold was accompanied with a suburbium to the south-east. All these pieces of information seem to be relevant from the point of view of possible excavations at both sites in future. At the same time, this data should also be of significance from the point of view of the heritage protection service and the protection of the discussed strongholds.

In the southern part of the Woświn lake there is a vast peninsula called “the Devilish Causeway” by local people. On the peninsula there is located an archaeological site that was excavated by Alfred Rowe in 1934. During the research a stone construction measuring 10 x 11 m was found. Function of this feature had aroused controversy but in the end, W. Filipowiak’s hypothesis that these were the remains of a Slavic cult construction was accepted in the literature. Further analysis however of the archive materials has shown that the stone construction found by A. Rowe is not a Slavic cult construction but an underpinning of a wooden one- or more-storey building such as those built by medieval knighthood within motte-and-bailey castles or so-called “manor houses on a mound”. It is likely that its owner was a representative of the wealthy family von Wedel.

The aim of the study has been to recognize overbank deposits in the middle Wieprza valley, including their precise dating and assessment of local conditions of sedimentation. It is based on geomorphological and geological research of floodplain landforms and deposits. Ages have been determined using radiocarbon method, archaeological dating and, for minerogenic deposits, TL dating. Analyses have been performed on floodplain basin deposits, palaeomeander infills, and subfossil and recent overbank deposits. The studied palaeomeanders have variable infills from various periods of the Sub-Atlantic. They are accompanied by diversified point bar deposits. Floodplain basin deposits have a similar, Sub-Atlantic age. Both types of deposits are overlain by flood deposits, which have accumulated since the early Middle Ages. Contemporary flood deposits of the Wieprza river differ from the sub-fossil ones through more restricted occurrence, resultant from channelization and channel incision. Therefore, in comparison to the pre-channelization period, the extent of floods is smaller and does not encompass the entire Holocene floodplain. Flood overbank deposits form only in the immediate vicinity of the channel.
