This article presents a profile of Jurgen Rost against a background of German psychology’s development. Jurgen Rost graduated from Christian-Albrechts University in 1976 and in 1980, after additional studies in mathematics he received PhD diploma. His scientific achievements include over 120 titles on very diverse subjects addressed to specialists, students, teachers and policy-makers. Some part of his works concerns methodology and efficiency of teaching in natural sciences and another part refers to statistics and methodology, e.g. to latent variables. Rost is also one of the scientists who tried to find a way to invalidate surface contradiction of quantitative and qualitative.

The damage evolution occurring in a set of elements in the nodes of the supporting one- and two-dimensional lattices is analysed within the stochastic Fibre Bundle Model approach. The element-strength-thresholds are drawn from a given probability distribution and the set of elements is subjected to an external load that is increased quasi-statically. If an element fails, its load has to be transferred to the other intact elements. We compare avalanche statistics i.e. the number of damaged elements for three different load transfer protocols, namely the global, local and recently introduced so-called Voronoi load transfer rule. Our example system is an array of nanopillars.

Artykuł opisuje kilka praktycznych metod wnioskowania, stanowiącego istotę statystyki matematycznej. Dotyczą one tzw. przedziałowego szacowania parametrów oraz parametrycznych testów istotności. Metody te, podobnie jak i inne narzędzia tego działu statystyki, pozwalają - w wyniku analizy próby losowej - na wypowiadanie sądów o całej zbiorowości (tzw. populacji generalnej), z której pochodzi wspomniana próba. Poprzednie artykuły z tego cyklu ukazały się w "Gospodarce Materiałowej i Logistyce" nr 9/2002 i nr 10/2002.

The article contains an analysis of the presence of Polish literary canon in international digital libraries. The main aim of the elaboration is to examine the quantitative dissemination of literary works comprising the canon of Polish literature in main foreign content aggregators and qualitative analysis of the typed collections. The data from the analysis of contents of selected digital libraries comprised the source of the study. As a result of the research, it was established that Europeana provides 1775 units, of which 1434 in Polish and 341 in other languages, Google books provides 764 units, of which 508 in Polish and 256 in other languages, and Internet Archive provides 254 units, of which 235 in Polish and 19 in other languages. The type of analyzed resources was also taken into consideration. Europeana comprised mainly literary and iconographic works, while Internet Access – literary and audiovisual. Google Books provides only text files. The work is concluded by a short analysis of the content providers. For Europeana it was mainly the National Library and the Federation of Digital Libraries, while for Internet Archive - Canadian Libraries. Foreign-language documents come from national libraries of the respective countries.

The aim of this work is to examine the environmental dependence of stellar velocity dispersion in local galaxies. In studies that likely suffer from the radial selection effect, one has a preference for the use of volumelimited samples. Two volume-limited samples with different redshift and luminosity ranges were constructed from the Main galaxy data of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 10 (SDSS DR10). Considering some drawbacks of volume-limited samples, the apparent magnitude-limited Main galaxy sample was also applied. Statistical analyses in these different galaxy samples can reach the same conclusion: galaxies with large stellar velocity dispersions exist preferentially in high density regimes, while galaxies with small stellar velocity dispersions are located preferentially in low density regions, which is inconsistent with that obtained at intermediate redshifts.

W artykule tym przedstawiony jest krótki rys historyczny rozwoju statystyki. W szczególności wyjaśniony jest rodowód słowa statystyka. Na tle ogólnego rozwoju przedstawione zostały warunki społeczno-polityczne w jakich powstawała statystyka polska. Pobieżnie omówiono prace dotyczące statystyki, jakie ukazały się w zwartej postaci w XIX wieku. Organizacja statystyki publicznej i literatura na ten temat, jako osobna problematyka, w artykule tym nie jest omawiana. Dokonano zaś krótkiej analizy krytycznej istniejącego polskiego piśmiennictwa na temat rozwoju myśli statystycznej w Polsce.

This paper presents a short overview of the history of statistics in Poland. The most significant books published during XIX century are briefly described. Organization and publications concerning the official statistics are beyond the scope of this paper. A critical description of the existing polish literature concerning the history of statistics is also included into this paper.

The goal of this study was to establish technical and tactical performance goals for elite male volleyball players (Spanish first division). This paper is the result of scientific collaboration between volleyball coaches and researchers. The process of establishing the goals and the reference values of the performance goals was: 1) conceptual analysis, establishing the criteria for the analysis of players’ and teams’ performance (researchers and coaches); 2) mathematical analysis, data collection and data analysis of the possible performance goals; and 3) practical analysis, establishing the performance goals according to their usefulness and applicability following the SMART principle. Seven performance goals were established to evaluate the technical-tactical actions of the players in training and in competition. Protocols utilized can be used as references of how to calculate the technical and tactical performance goals in sport.

In the archaeological and palaeogeographical literature, it is relatively frequent to find groups of radiocarbon dates of too close values. Too close means here that the dates exhibit no other variability than that of random origin, quantified by the given measurement errors. The chi-squared statistic seems to be appropriate to test, if the given group of dates is of random variability, of larger variability (what is typical) or of too small variability. The last case is hard to explain.

A general dependence of the enzyme catalytic rate on its mass was revealed when a statistical analysis of 17065 records from the EMP database was performed. The estimated activation energy of the catalytic process decreases asymptotically with the enzyme molecular mass increase. The proposed theoretical model postulates the existence of an intermediate complex of the enzyme and the departing product. It allows for the explanation of the discovered mass-energy relationship, as an effect of the global enzyme-product interactions during complex dissociation. Fitted parameters of the model seem to be in agreement with those widely accepted for the van der Waals energy of molecular interactions. Their values also agree with the picture of the hydrogen bonding in the catalytic process and suggest that surface walk can be the favorable way of the product departure.
