Badania pokazują, iż nakłady przedsiębiorstw na świecie w zakresie systemów informatycznych stopniowo rosną. Uzasadnieniem tego faktu jest ogólne przekonanie, iż rozbudowa systemów informatycznych ma pośredni lub bezpośredni wpływ na efektywność ekonomiczną przedsiębiorstwa. Pierwsze badania dotyczące oceny efektywności ekonomicznej projektów informatycznych były prowadzone już w latach 50. w USA. Od tamtego czasu rozwój technologii informatycznej pociągnął rozwój badań nad ekonomiczną oceną przedsięwzięć informatycznych.

Research shows that the expenditure of international and domestic companies on IS systems has been gradually growing. This results from a common belief that the development of IS has a direct or indirect impact on a company’s economic effectiveness. The first research concerning the economic effectiveness evaluation in IS investments was conducted in the USA in the 50s. Since then the development of IT has triggered a development in research on IS investment economic effectiveness evaluation. This research has been aimed at defining models which enable us to identify the correlation between expenditure related to IS and a company’s economic benefits. However, it needs to be highlighted that the result of this research is not obvious. This kind of research is characterised by a lack of consensus between representatives of science and professionals or even within these groups.

The paper shows the phenomenon of popular culture against the background of modern society. The latter society, in view of its properties, constitutes perfect conditions for the development of the culture in question. The variety of bits of information „floating” through modern society, the large number of principles, values, attitudes or life styles make up a mirror in which the „image” of popular culture is reflected. The paper turns our attention to specific processes and phenomena characteristic of today society. Accordingly, popular culture has this particular shape. The paper stresses the role of modern society in shaping popular culture, and shows that there is an obvious relationship between the two phenomena. Besides, it makes us aware that popular culture is not a phenomenon isolated from reality, or a phenomenon which is „beyond us”. Rather, it is something that we, more or less consciously, create and in which we participate.
