The article analyses various archaeologically perceptible methods of withdrawing goods from circulation. This phenomenon is known as potlatch. Its social and economic context was considered on the basis of various prehistoric cultures in Central Europe. It is pointed out that this is a phenomenon typical of a peripheral economy and a hierarchical social structure.

Hierarchia prestiżu zaliczana jest do podstawowych wymiarów nierówności społecznych. Podlega on oczywiście ewolucji, podobnie jak stratyfikacja klasowa, stosunki władzy i inne wymiary stratyfikacji społecznej.

The hierarchy of prestige is considered one of the basic dimensions of social inequalities. It has been evolving throughout the centuries, as have class stratification, power relations and other dimensions of social hierarchy. Based on my own reflections and referring in part to empirical research, I make an attempt to answer the question of how the issue of prestige appears in Poland. The goal is to consider whether the role of prestige in social stratification is increasing or rather declining.

So, what cognomen will we think up for him?” Medieval rulers in the snares of the chronicler’s power: The official historian of the Duchy of Burgundy Georges Chastelain (1415–1475) included in his work also a noteworthy evocation of a crisis in the womb of the ruling family from January 1457. The solitary wandering of the duke in the woods as a result of an argument with his heir, he took as a pilgrimage for adventure and realization. In that, he utilized the approaches and motifs of medieval fictional literature. He used the fictional methods of “interweaving” also in treating the neighbouring episodes on the rebellious brewmaster and fraudulent servant, who threatened the order and calm of the Burgundian territory. Chastelain’s passages on the relation of the French and Flemish languages also serve to reinforce the hierarchical order. The author devoted great attention to the selection of cognomens for contemporary ruler, particularly King of France Charles VII and Duke Philip. They became a chance for him to assert his own influence on the events as the creative historian and man of letters literature, who has the power to form the image of his lords in the future.

The study was carried out in the years 1998-2001 in Złotniki Experimental Farm. Observations included 82 female goats differentiated with respect to hornedness, age, breed and color. During the study period the animals were weighed seven times. The goats were observed in production conditions in groups arranged by goat-house workers. The number of animals in the observed groups was from 4 to 61. The same goats were observed in subsequent groups formed due to connecting and separating already existing groups. During the observation continuous recording was carried out. On basis of agonistic behavior for each individual a dominance index (di) was calculated being a quotient of the number of animals over which the individual dominates and the number of animals with which it enters into domination relationship.

EN
Roosting in various shelters allows saving energy, especially in winter, thus hole nesting birds, like tits, search for places suitable to spend cold nights. Because the environment probably does not provide enough shelters for all birds from a winter flock to roost, a competition for best sites, as nest boxes, probably occurs. Therefore, the aim of this study was to describe the pattern of using the nest boxes by birds for roosting during three consecutive winter seasons and to determine the structure of a group of roosting birds in relation to the winter flock. Tits were captured and marked; daily controls of nest boxes were performed to find out which of them the tits used for roosting and subsequently, birds entering these boxes were caught at night. Great tits Parus major were the most abundant species roosting in the studied boxes with proportion of blue tits Cyanistes caeruleus differed between years. Young individuals prevailed among the birds roosting in nest boxes. However the age and sex structure of great tits roosting in nest boxes was similar to that observed in winter flocks, which was in contrast to earlier studies that found that the males and older individuals, high in the social hierarchy of the flock, will take over these boxes. The size of winter flock differs strongly among winters, thus it is possible that the level of competition for these roosting sites also varies between the years.
