The article concerns conservation and research work on a fragment o f an Early Renaissance cassone with the history of the Roman Lucretia. The first part o f the article contains the iconographie description of figurai depictions and a general characteristic of cassoni — their nature and function. The second part discusses aspects of the technology and technique of execution upon the basis of a number of examinations conducted during conservation. Attention is particularly drawn to the gilding techniques, applied for the decoration o f the surface o f the cassone (methods o f preparing gilt), making it feasible to propose more exact dates and to establish the approximate provenance o f the monument. Finally, the article includes descriptions of the more interesting conservation undertakings which facilitated a more precise examination o f the technology and aided in dating the object.
