As it is widely stated in the literature, biofilms are responsible for most chronic infections, which have grown exponentially over the past three decades. The use of so-called alloys, as a new generation of materials, enables us to find the golden mean in the arena widely known as implantology. The use of the surface layer, using the chosen Atomic Layer Deposition method, is to be the basis for minimizing the risk of an organism reactions. Therefore, the primary objective of this study was to observe the impact of physicochemical properties of the surface layers (bactericidal) on the processes that occur on the implants surface made of titanium biomaterials used in bone structures. The study also attempted to evaluate the physicochemical properties of the ZnO coatings, deposited on the substrate of one of the new generation Ti13Nb13Zr alloys, using the ALD method. Included in the assessment of the physicochemical properties of the surface layers formed in this manner, we perform pitting corrosion resistance tests, scratch tests, tribological tests and surface wettability tests. Based on the obtained data, the differing physicochemical properties of the alloy with ZnO coatings are found to be dependent on the applied surface modification. For the conducted tests, differences are determined for the tests on the corrosion resistance, surface wettability and the abrasion resistance for samples with and without the ZnO coating. In addition, tests show that the coating applied to the alloy, which is previously subjected to the sand-blasted process, is characterized by improved adhesion.

Diosgenin is a steroidal sapogenin present in fenugreek and Dioscorea spp. as glycosides (saponins). Diosgenin has already been reported to inhibit osteoclastogenesis and to stimulate osteogenic activity of osteoblastic cells in vitro, and to exert some antiosteoporotic effects in rats in vivo. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of diosgenin administration on the skeletal system of rats with normal estrogen level and with estrogen deficiency induced by bilateral ovariectomy. The experiments were carried out on 3-month-old non-ovariectomized and ovariectomized Wistar rats, divided into control rats and rats receiving diosgenin (50 mg/kg p.o. daily) for 4 weeks. Serum bone turnover markers, bone mass and mineralization, histomorphometric parameters and mechanical properties were studied. Diosgenin improved some investigated parameters in both non-ovariectomized and ovariectomized rats, in which estrogen deficiency induced osteoporotic changes. Diosgenin increased compact bone formation and probably inhibited cancellous bone resorption, which led to improvement of mechanical properties of compact and cancellous bone. In conclusion, this in vivo study demonstrated that diosgenin may be one of sparse compounds increasing bone formation.

During ontogenesis an imbalance is observable in the development of the skeletal and vascular systems. By means of anatomical and radiological methods the gonadal veins were studied in relation to the vertebral column in 60 human foetuses of both sexes aged from 4 to 6 months of prenatal life. In male foetuses aged 4–5 months the origin of the gonadal veins projected onto the sacral apex (r₁ = 0.95, r₃ = 0.85), and in 6th month they extended below the vertebral column (r₁’ = 0.80, r₃’ = 0.90). In female foetuses the origin of the gonadal veins in the 4th month projected symmetrically onto S₁ (r₅ = 0.70, r₇ = 0.70). In the 5th month of intrauterine life the origin of the left ovarian vein was found at S₂ (r₇’ = 0.80) and the origin of the right one at S₁–S₂ (r₅’ = 0.80). In the 6th month the origin of the left ovarian vein was located at S₃ (r₇’’ = 0.80) and the right one at S₂–S₃ (r₅’’ = 0.90). The skeletopic analysis of the origin of the gonadal veins demonstrated gender (the origin was higher in females) and syntopic (the origin was higher on the right side) differences (p ≤ 0.05). In foetuses of both sexes aged 4 months of prenatal life the termination of the left gonadal veins projected onto Th₁₂–L₁ (r₄ = 0.85, r₈ = 0.80) and in foetuses aged 5–6 months it projected onto L₁–L₂ (r₄’ = 0.90, r₈’ = 0.95). In both sexes the termination of the gonadal veins on the right side projected constantly onto L₂ (r₂ = 0.90, r₆ = 0.95) from the 4th to the 6th month of intrauterine life. The skeletopic analysis of the termination of the gonadal veins showed syntopic dimorphism (p ≤ 0.05) without gender differences (p > 0.05). On the right side the termination of the gonadal (testicular and ovarian) veins projected constantly onto L₂. On the left side the termination of the left gonadal (testicular and ovarian) veins apparently descended by one vertebra (pseudodescensus).

W pracy zostaną przedstawione możliwości i ograniczenia rozwiązań wspomagających pomiar parametrów morfometrycznych stawu skokowego człowieka na podstawie cyfrowych obrazów radiologicznych. Pomiary przeprowadzono na zdjęciach rentgenowskich w standardowych projekcjach. Stosowanie takich systemów pozwala na automatyzację przetwarzania obrazu, zwiększenie dokładności pomiarów parametrów i określenie normy populacji wybranych wskaźników morfometrycznych stawu skokowego.

The paper will be presented the possibilities and limitations of solutions that support the measurement of morphometric parameters of human ankle on the basis of digital radiological images. Measurements were carried out on X-ray images in standard projections. The use of such systems will allow to the automation of image processing, increase accuracy of measurement parameters and determine the population norms of the selected morphometric indicators of the ankle joint.

Przedmiotem pracy jest problem ułatwienia wykrywania stanów niebezpiecznych w układzie kostnym na przykładzie kości miednicznej człowieka. Rozpoznanie tych stanów we wczesnej fazie może przyczynić się do przeciwdziałania urazom kostnym. W artykule przedstawiono najważniejsze etapy zaproponowanego postępowania: począwszy od zdjęć tomograficznych i w wyniku kolejnych przekształceń pozyskanie informacji o badanym układzie kostnym. Kluczową kwestią procesu wspomagania diagnozowania sytuacji niebezpiecznych jest wychwycenie zależności między obrazami tomograficznymi a stanem wytężenia kości.

In the paper the issue of aid of diagnosis of the dangerous states in pelvic bone was raised. Detection of these states in early phase can contribute to counteraction of bone injuries. In the article the most important stages of proposed method was presented: beginning from QCT images and by subsequent conversions obtaining information about the X-rayed bone. The crucial point of the process of aid diagnosing dangerous situations in pelvic bone was subordinating CT images suitable the effort of the bone.

W pracy przeprowadzono analizę wytrzymałościową liniowo sprężystą i sprężysto-plastyczną i porównano wyniki w przypadku dwóch układów biomechanicznych: połączenia odłamów kostnych kości udowej stabilizatorem płytkowym Polfix oraz połączenia kręgów szyjnych kręgosłupa stabilizatorem D-Fun-M. Zbadano wpływ obciążenia układów, materiałów przyjętych na implanty oraz typu rozpatrywanego zagadnienia na wielkości charakteryzujące stan wewnętrzny ośrodka (naprężenia, odkształcenia). Jest to istotne w przypadku dużych obciążeń (lub przeciążenia) układu.

The subject of the paper concerns strength analysis of two biomechanical structures: the joint of the femur bone and the plate stabilizer Polfix and the joint of cervical vertebras of spine by the stabilizer D-Fun-M. Reactions in these objects are investigated. In order to achieve the results, the models of the structures is prepared and computed with finite element method. On the base of the numerical models the elastoplastic analysis of the structures was performed. The attention is concentrated on the investigation of the interdependence between.

Many people spend about 80% of their free time practicing sports, including skiing, which in many cases can cause changes in the skeletal system, muscular system and other organs. The aim of this article is to discuss the treatment of a 25-year-old man who suffered a compressive fracture of the C6 vertebra with paresis of the ulnar nerve. The treatment used physiotherapy with changing magnetic fields (magnetostimulation, magnetolaserotherapy, kinesitherapy exercises) with good effects. On the basis of the results we discovered that these treatment methods can accelerate the time of treatment and increase quality of life.

Genistein, a major phytoestrogen of soy, is considered a potential drug for prevention and treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis. The aim of the present study was to compare the effects of genistein, estradiol and raloxifene on the skeletal system in vivo and in vitro. Genistein (5 mg/kg), estradiol (0.1 mg/kg) or raloxifene hydrochloride (5 mg/kg) were administered daily by a stomach tube to mature ovariectomized Wistar rats for 4 weeks. Bone mass, mineral and calcium content, macrometric parameters and mechanical properties were examined. Also the effects of genistein, estradiol and raloxifene (10-9-10-7 M) on the formation of osteoclasts from neonatal mouse bone marrow cells and the activity of osteoblasts isolated from neonatal mouse calvariae were compared. In vivo, estrogen deficiency resulted in the impairment of bone mineralization and bone mechanical properties. Raloxifene but not estradiol or genistein improved bone mineralization. Estradiol fully normalized the bone mechanical properties, whereas genistein augmented the deleterious effect of estrogen-deficiency on bone strength. In vitro, genistein, estradiol and raloxifene inhibited osteoclast formation from mouse bone marrow cells, decreasing the ratio of RANKL mRNA to osteoprotegerin mRNA expression in osteoblasts. Genistein, but not estradiol or raloxifene, decreased the ratio of alkaline phosphatase mRNA to ectonucleotide pyrophosphatase phosphodiesterase 1 mRNA expression in osteoblasts. This difference may explain the lack of genistein effect on bone mineralization observed in ovariectomized rats in the in vivo study. Concluding, our experiments demonstrated profound differences between the activities of genistein, estradiol and raloxifene towards the osseous tissue in experimental conditions.

We have attempted to assess the influence of long-term aluminium chloride intake on the biochemical parameters and oxidative stress biomarkers in experimental animals. Three months’ administration of aluminium chloride in drinking water at a dose of 80 mg/l significantly elevated blood serum urea and creatinine concentration, as well as oxidative stress biomarkers such as: TBARS content in erythrocytes hemolysate, protein carbonyl groups concentration and 8-hydroxy-2’-deoxyguanosine excretion with urine.
