Given a positive integer m ≤ n/2, Wojda conjectured in 1985 that if D1 and D2 are digraphs of order n such that [formula] and [formula] then D1 and D2 pack. The cases when m = 1 or m = n/2 follow from known results. Here we prove the conjecture for [formula].

This review article compares four edited monographs that represent a core of municipal election studies in the Czech Republic. Most Czech political scientists didn’t pay attention to elections in the local political arena before 2002 when the fourth elections after the renewal of local government in 1990 were held. Earlier monographs were largely indebted to data gathered by the Czech Statistical Office. Their authors usually commented on data on an aggregated level and prepared case studies of chosen municipalities that included: a description of election campaigns, an analysis of programmatic statements and the role of coalition bargaining. Recently political scientists have been able to gather more comprehensive datasets which have in turn allowed them to apply more sophisticated analytical techniques. Moreover, political scientists can now include data from almost every municipality in the Czech Republic which has, in turn, allowed them to identify the size of the municipality (both geographically and in terms of voters) as a key independent variable. In this way a highly fragmented territorial structure is better represented than in older works. Finally, the political, personal and career profiles of mayors have begun to appear as a new topic in recent publications. The challenge for the future is how to address not only domestic but foreign audiences too.

This study was aimed at evaluating commercial roasted buckwheat groats for their organoleptic and geometrical traits, color and content of phenolic compounds. An attempt was also undertaken to correlate the achieved values of the analyzed parameters. The shape, sizes and color (HIS model) were determined using Digital Image Analysis (DIA), whereas the content of phenolics was assayed spectrophotometrically with the Folin-Ciocalteu method. High variability was noted in projection area and length of seeds. In turn, seed circularity was the trait with the lowest variance coefficient. The analyzed groats differed also in color, which may be due to differences in the size of seeds subjected to the roasting process. The low variability was also found in the case of free phenolics content. Finally, the study demonstrated a positive correlation between buckwheat seed surface and the content of phenolic compounds, which may be caused by a correlation between seed size and roasting time.

International statistics show that small firms are the dominant form of business enterprise today. Yet, despite ongoing research into the theory of the firm, there is still no common view on the mechanisms of firm growth. This article aims to stimulate further theoretical and empirical research into firm growth. In the first part of the paper, the author reviews the most seminal theories of the growth of the firm to date, noting that there are two broadly perceived schools of thought within the analysed field. The first approach advocates a more or less stochastic pattern of firm growth. The second research school holds that the resources at the firm’s disposal are the differentiators, drivers of, but also limits to, firm growth. In the second part of the paper, based on the literature review and deduction, the author develops an alternative model of firm growth. Building on the properties of the Markovian processes, he shows that it may be because of the seemingly rational behaviour of firm incumbents that most firms do not grow in size beyond some satisfying level. The proposed model of firm growth is equally applicable to firms of all sizes operating in all industries and markets.

The aim of the study was to determine the possibility of using small seeds of rape (diameter <1.6 mm,) perceived as a raw material of inferior nutritional quality, for the biofuels production. Research material was samples of industrial mass of rapeseeds originating from three Polish regions. The seed mass was cleaned in a sieve separator, removing mineral matter (stones), cereal grains, stems and dusts. Then, the sample was sifted through a set of sieves and two fractions were received: seeds with diameter >1.6 mm – sample F1 and with diameter < 1.6 mm – sample F2. Each fraction was characterized by its share in bulk mass, moisture content, 1000 seeds weight, yield of pressing, fat content and phosphorus content. Cold-pressed oils were determined in terms of total and unhydrated phosphorus content, acid value and fatty acids content. Fractionation by weight rapeseeds with using an industrial sieve separation may provide a simple method for improving the technological value of the raw material used for food purposes, and thus obtain fine seed that could be intended exclusively for the production of technical oil. Despite the stated inferior quality of small seeds, it was found that the increased values of some discriminants would not have impact on the technology of biofuel production and cost of production.

The paper aims at the empirical evaluation of the impact of bank size (as measured by median total assets) on the value relevance of two key accounting variables, i.e. book values of equity and net earnings, in terms of their joint explanatory power in the regression model and the relative responsiveness of bank market values to the changes in those variables. The research is based on the multiple linear regression analysis after controlling for the presence of fixed and random effects. The examined sample covers all domestically-based commercial banks listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange over the period 1998–2017. The final pooled sample comprises 18 banks and 271 bank-year observations. The findings of the study suggest that the equity investors perceive the joint informational content of book values and earnings of larger banks as more value relevant in comparison to the accounting numbers reported by their smaller peers. The responsiveness of banks’ market values to the changes in each of the explanatory variables seems, however, to be affected by their size in a different way. As expected, book values of equity have turned out to be significantly more informative for smaller banks, whereas the evidence regarding the impact of size on the responsiveness of bank market values to the changes in net earnings is ambiguous. Although larger banks appear to exhibit a higher sensitivity of stock prices to variations in net earnings per share than their smaller peers, the difference between the examined subsamples is not statistically significant.

In our previous studies, we modified the Enders and Siklos test for threshold error correction to a version allowing the individual threshold variable to be responsible for the asymmetric mechanism of the system. The idea was to learn about the threshold mechanism both in the long and short run. In this paper, we tested for the asymmetry of the adjustment of the error correction mechanism towards the long-run path. The subsamples within regimes differ in size with respect to the threshold value. The novelty lies in the division of both short and long-run variables according to a threshold variable with a given threshold value (assumed or estimated). We named the test extended Enders and Siklos test (exE-S). The present study focuses on the power and size of the modified procedure. A simulation study was designed, computed and conducted. The results are favourable for the proposed approach, although they strongly depend on the difference in values between the adjustment parameters in the regimes.

The Tell el-Retaba archaeological site is located at Wadi Tumilat, a shallow valley running from the Nile Delta to the Bitter Lakes. In ancient times, a route connecting Egypt with Syria-Palestine ran across the site. In the 13th century BC, during the rule of Ramesses II, a fortress surrounded by “Wall 1” was erected and in times of Ramesses III in the 12th century BC, a larger fortress surrounded by “Wall 2” and “Wall 3” was constructed. Using the finite element method (FEM) and ZSoil 2D&3D software, the wall heights were modelled and their soil-structure interaction was analysed. Strength of the wall depended on size and strength of bricks and mortar, brickwork, wall shape and foundation. Ancient builders using mud bricks must have known from practical experience the essentials of a wall construction, in which the height to width ratio was at 1.75 to 1.85. Moreover, they must have related the engineering properties of the material with the height of the construction and its purpose. The width to height ratio must have been used and related by ancient Egyptians to the ground resistance. Modelling has shown that, at wall width of 5 m, the foundation would have lost its stability at wall height of 13–14 m and bricks from the lower part of the wall would be destroyed. According to the undertaken assumptions, in order to retain stability, the wall height must have been limited to about 8–9 m.

The two sided unit root test of a first-order autoregressive model in the presence of an innovation outlier is considered. In this paper, we present three tests; two are usual and one is new. We give formulas computing the size and the power of the three tests when an innovation outlier (IO) occurs at a specified time, say k. Using a comparative study, we show that the new statistic performs better under contamination. A Small sample case is considered only.

We consider the problem of obtaining parameterized lower bounds for the size of arithmetic circuits computing polynomials with the degree of the polynomial as the parameter. We consider the following special classes of multilinear algebraic branching programs: 1) Read Once Oblivious Branching Programs (ROABPs), 2) Strict interval branching programs, 3) Sum of read once formulas with restricted ordering. We obtain parameterized lower bounds (i.e., nΩ(t(k)) lower bound for some function t of k ) on the size of the above models computing a multilinear polynomial that can be computed by a depth four circuit of size g (k)n0(1) for some computable function g. Further, we obtain a parameterized separation between ROABPs and read-2 ABPs. This is obtained by constructing a degree k polynomial that can be computed by a read-2 ABP of small size such that the rank of the partial derivative matrix under any partition of the variables is large.

Modern agriculture involves the implementation of a particular technological operation, according to the appropriate map-task, which is developed pre-based on diverse information. Knowledge of a certain structure of soil cover variability, obtained using information and technical systems of local operational monitoring of agro-biological state of agricultural lands, allows us to adopt effective operational decisions for efficient management of agro-biological potential of agricultural lands. Obviously, under such conditions, there is a need for fundamentally new approaches to agricultural production, which is to ensure the proper quality of technological operations. The quality of the implementation of technological operations is an integral indicator of the efficiency of production of agricultural products within the agro-biological field. The necessary quality of implementation of the basic technological processes in plant growing is provided by the integrated information and technical systems of operational monitoring of the agro-biological state of agricultural lands. In connection with this, the task is to obtain reliable data on the agro-biological state of the soil environment by reducing the error in determining the magnitude of the conductive properties of the soil, providing individual stabilization of the working electrodes and the mechanism of lifting / lowering working electrodes, copying inequalities of the soil environment, reducing the intensity of the destruction of the soil structure , self-cleaning of the working contact of the electrode and ensuring the stability of the electrical contact of the electrode with the soil, by instrument design perfection. The task is achieved by using the information and technical system of operational monitoring of the soil environment of the structure to determine the conductive characteristics of the soil environment.

The paper examines the relations between selected company characteristics and common stock returns. In the paper, we concentrate on four well-recognized fundamental factors determining stock returns: momentum, value, size and liquidity. First, we review the existing literature in the field. Second, we investigate the relationship between fundamental factors and stock returns on the Polish market. Our computations are based on all companies on the Warsaw Stock Exchange listed in the period 2000-12. Our research provides fresh out-of-sample evidence for momentum, value, size and liquidity premium from the Polish market.

Cherry laurel (Prunus laurocerasus) is an important wild edible fruits naturally grown in black sea region in Turkey. Shape attributes of twenty-one cherry laurel accessions were determined both descriptively and based on elliptic Fourier analysis first time in the literature. In the semantic evaluation, shape of most of the accessions was near to sphere. But, the results of the descriptive data showed that the accessions had different size, shape and gravimetric attributes. The accessions such as 30023, 30024 and 30027 had the highest means as to the gravimetric and size attributes, while the means of the 20043, 30028 and 30030 accessions were found to be the lowest. The sphericity data of 30019, 30028, 30030 and 30033 accessions had the highest means ranged between 96.2 and 97.8%. The cluster test divided the accessions to five subclasses. The genotypes in the 5th cluster had the highest gravimetric and size attributes than the other accessions. While the accessions in the 1st cluster were the highest sphericity mean, they had the lowest gravimetric and size attributes.

W ocenie semantycznej kształt większości był zbliżony do kuli, jednak wyniki danych opisowych wykazały różnicę w rozmiarze, kształcie i cechach grawimetrycznych. Genotypy w piątym skupisku miały większe wartości cech grawimetrycznych i cech dotyczących kształtu niż pozostałe. Odmiany w pierwszym skupisku miały największą średnią sferyczności, ale najmiejsze wartości cech grawimetrycznych i cech dotyczących kształtu.

Preliminary results concerning influence of polydispersity of ‘atomic’ sizes on elastic properties of the rotator phase of a three-dimensional system of hard dumbbells have been presented. It has been shown that, in contrast to two-dimensional hard discs and three-dimensional hard spheres, for the polydispersity parameter not higher than 5%, there is no significant influence on the elastic constants and Poisson’s ratio of hard dumbbells of the anisotropy parameter 0.15 (i.e., when the discs forming dumbbells are distanced by 15% of the average disc diameter).

An anatomical study was undertaken in order to investigate whether the sizes of selected human skull foramina with significant venous compartments correlated significantly with skull capacity. A total of 100 macerated human skulls were examined to determine the diameter of the foramina and the skull capacity. Measurements of the surface area of the foramina were made using a computerised digital analysis system. Only the size of the hypoglossal canal and jugular foramen were found to correlate significantly with the capacity of the skull. This correlation, together with the considerable size of the hypoglossal canal, indicated its important role in the venous drainage of the brain. There was considerable centralisation of venous outflow from the brain, with 60% of the area of all venous foramina of the skull occupied by jugular foramina. Asymmetry between the right and left jugular foramina was identified, with an average ratio of 1.6 (ranging between 1 and 3.47). In the case of right-sided domination the correlation between the skull capacity and the size of both jugular foramina was negative (the larger the skull cavity, the less the asymmetry), while in the case of left-sided domination the correlation was positive. Perhaps the left-sided domination is less advantageous for the haemodynamics of blood outflow, as the left brachiocephalic vein is longer and is often compressed by the sternum and aortic arch.
