The goal of the study is to answer the question about the educational values of cultural promotional events held in shopping malls. To achieve this goal, an ethnographic research was performed during three events in two shopping malls in Wrocław. It consisted of participatory observation and interviews with 6 participants of the events. The research is based on Knud Illeris’s theory of learning through everyday life (non-formal learning). During the study, it was observed that the organizers of the events use the newest methods of learning (including new technologies). The information is transferred in various ways and the extra attractions that are part of the events engage participants in creative activities. The gained knowledge can be theoretical or practical and it can encourage participants to change their life habits or to undertake various activities in their lives. It also makes accessible the previously inaccessible areas of reality. New knowledge usually does not create new structures and basically reconstructs the existing ones (accommodation learning). The learning process in shopping malls during the cultural events is a byproduct or a side effect ofpromotional activities, yet it takes place and it can improve the quality of life of the participants. Thus,a shopping mall, an institution of the consumer society, becomes an institution of the society of knowledge.

Post-occupancy evaluation (POE) is a performance assessment methodology, which can be applied to determine the level of user satisfaction with any given facility. Since university shopping malls could have an impact on the students’ academic experience and well-being, it is of paramount significance that university shopping mall facilities are designed and operated to the highest standards. The Extensive literature review highlighted the lack of POE studies for assessing the quality of shopping mall facilities. This study aims at addressing this gap, by presenting the findings of an investigative POE of a university shopping mall facility. The Literature review was conducted pertaining to the technical and functional performance requirements of shopping malls. Twenty-nine performance indicators were identified for shopping mall facilities. These were grouped under five categories, namely building performance, safety and security, proximity and accessibility, space planning and layout, and mall services. A questionnaire survey was developed based on the identified performance indicators. The survey was administered to obtain the students’ feedback on the university shopping mall facility. In addition, a walkthrough tour of the mall facility was performed to identify issues, which can be immediately recognized. Finally, a plan of action was developed to improve the performance of the shopping mall facility. The study is beneficial to planners, architects and facilities managers of such facilities.

The article is focused on examining the availability of inhabitants of the Łódź region to the shopping malls. Field of basic research is the municipality. The analysis included all the municipalities of the Łódź region and the municipalities located beyond, if the customer access to a shop in the Łódź region takes no more than 60 minutes. The same principle was adopted in relation to the shops. The study included all the objects in the Łódź region, and these shops arranged in neighboring regions, to which the inhabitants of the Łódź region are traveling less than an hour. This is to make real results. The data source for the population was the Local Data Bank Central Statistical Office while the database of stores was extracted from the OpenStreetMap resources. The author used the two testing methods to achieve this objective of the survey – Huff’s model and enhanced two-step floating catchment area method.
