The results of studies on the effect of the use of the second generation of genetically modified (GM) plants in animal nutrition were discussed in the article. These GM plants have a changed chemical composition as compared to parental lines, mainly in order to increase its nutritional value. Plants with increased levels of protein and essential amino acids (lysine, methionine, tryptophan) or a decreased content of phytate phosphorus are good examples of this kind of modification. The results of experiments with poultry and pigs indicate that the use of the second generation of GM plants may lower the costs of feed mixture production (plants with increased level of limiting amino acids) and decrease the content of phosphorus in animal excreta (plants with lower level of P in phytate form).
