Two groups of general senescence theories of living organisms can be distinguished: deterministic (genetically programmed) and stochastic (with significant contribution of external factors). It seems that the process of senescence is genetically programmed but its realization takes place with participation of the environmental factors via phytohormones and phytochrome. In this paper mainly senescence of monocarpic plants is considered. Genetically determined death of these plants is linked to reproduction. The effect of flowering on senescence and mutual interaction between organs (donors and sinks) occurring through phytohormones is discussed in details. Catabolic reactions, senescence of tracheary elements and lignification process are also considered.
