Arsenic is a prevalent and pervasive environmental contaminant with varied amounts in drinking water. Arsenic exposure causes cancer, cardiovascular, liver, nerve, and ophthalmic diseases. The current study aimed to find the best conditions for eliminating arsenic from simulated wastewater and their effect on biomarkers of hepatic in mice. Adsorption tests including pH, contact duration, Al-kheriat dosage, and arsenic concentrations were evaluated. Seventy-two healthy albino mice (male) were accidentally allocated into nine groups (n = 8), the first group was considered as healthy control, the second group (AL-Kheriat), and other groups received AL-Kheriat and arsenic 25, 50, 75, 100, 125, 150 and 175 mg/kg, respectively. Next 10 days, the following were examined: LD50 level, ALP (alkaline phosphatase), ALT (alanine aminotransferase), and AST (aspartate aminotransferase), besides the histological condition of the liver. The results showed that the best time for arsenic removal was 4 hours, pH 8, Alkheriat dose 1 gram, and 50 ppm of pollutants. The level of alkaline phosphatase ALP, alanine transaminase ALT, and aspartate transaminase AST was increased to 150.96 (U/L), 143.1(U/L), and 32.8(U/L), respectively, in Al-Khriet and arsenic exposed population than the healthy control group, When the appropriate dose of Al-Khriet and arsenic mixture is used, it can aid in the selection of a safe way of disposing of the adsorbed residue. Additionally, it can serve as a low-cost rodent pesticide, increasing the commercial viability of this removal strategy.

This paper presents results of a study focused on using the increased predation pressure of avian raptors for biocontrol of local populations of the common vole (Microtus arvalis) in Haná (Czech Republic), a region of traditional agriculture in central Europe. Five raptor perches per hectare were installed on fields (total number of perches installed per year was 625) during two vole outbreaks in 2005/2006 and 2009/2010. The importance of the installed perches for the abundance of raptors during both outbreaks was evaluated based on the overall raptor counting along a transect. The results imply that supporting aggregations of raptors on agricultural arable land by means of installed artificial perches can increase the predation pressure on M. arvalis at the onset and during its population outbreaks. The density of raptors was low in fields without installed perches, although the local vole population was reaching its peak densities (2100 active burrows per hectare). In contrast, the density of raptors in fields with installed perches was markedly high. The results showed that the cost of biological control applied to agricultural land with an ongoing vole outbreak may sum up to approx. 50% of the rodenticide application costs (with equal efficiencies of both methods reducing the common vole abundance below the economic injury level).

The purpose of the study was to suppress a known natural focus of fi eld fever exerting an infl uence on animal hosts of leptospires – small terrestrial mammals (s.t.m.) by rodenticide. After repeated application of the zinc phosphide rodenticide, the s.t.m. were regularly live-trapped and checked for leptospirosis by dark-fi eld microscopy and culture of their renal tissue and serological examination. Isolated leptospira strains were typed by help of rabbit factor sera. The deratization infl uenced the s.t.m. structure considerably: the proportion of the dominant Microtus arvalis subjects – the main reservoirs of Leptospira kirschneri serovar Grippotyphosa – were gradually and substantionally reduced and, contrarily, the percentage of the potetial hosts subjects – Clethrionomys glareolus and Apodemus fl avicollis – rose decisively over time. Changes in culture and serological positivity for leptospirosis of s.t.m. have also been enregistered. The highest original infestation of M. arvalis have slowly but strongly decreased while that of C. glareolus and A. fl avicollis has increased decisively and reached its maximum within the last years of investigation. It is probable that these two animal species have undertaken the leading role in the maintenance of the natural focus of the fi eld fever. In other animal species analogous trends were not registered. Based on these long-term fi ndings, there exists the possibility to suppress only partially and temporarily the epizootic process of leptospirosis in a natural focus that can be desirable in some circumstances (building or free time activities, etc.).
