This article presents a two-denominational village community in central Poland (Roman Catholics and followers of the Old Catholic Mariavite Church). The author strives to combine an anthropological interpretation of her field studies with a broader historical and social perspective. Mariavitism emerged fromRoman Catholicism a hundred years ago. Today it no longer provokes the spontaneous social sanctions of the followers of the mother Church. The structural dichotomy, indistinguishable in everyday life, has been channelled in the local political division. Celebrations of holidays in the village public space are a site of fractional rivalry between political actors and they also serve as a symbolic means of expression for different social forces. Because of the dense local relations and symbols and their interpretations, the local community is easily manipulated politically and this is weakening their civic activity.

The image of the non-Orthodox in Camblak’s work is unequivocally negative. Behind the abusive rhetoric lie patterns well known to social psychology. One can easily recognize the author’s dehumanizing attitude, which reveals the meaning of many elements of Camblak’s narrative in The Martyrdom of John the New. The concept of dehumanization is useful for the study of the attitude of medieval literate elites towards minorities. Although at its core it concerns cognitive phenomena it immediately makes us think about their behavioral implications.

This article presents an attempt to focus on the category of exception in the discourse on freedom of expression of religious minorities in addition to naming religious groups as dominant and non-dominant ones. It is noteworthy that the ombudsman of Georgia mentions the word “exception” several times in her 2020 report. Assuming something as an exception does not only mean that one group is given a privilege over another one and the principle of equality is violated. Making an exception to the restrictions imposed by the pandemic in general and in particular means creating a situation in which the government goes beyond the legal order endangering the sovereignty of law. On the other hand, it is without a doubt that even in a sanitary-epidemiological state, the rule of law must act and it is necessary to protect it.
