Textualisation of places recovers memory of the territories which seem marginalized, excluded, places which belong to “the historically mute”. The article exemplifies the concepts of rescue history in cultural texts which originated in the region of Podlasie. One of them is Dana Łukasińska’s drama Antyhona, the story of a borderland Polish-Belarusian village in the years 1942–1947. Next is a performance Metoda Ustawień Narodowych directed by Michał Stankiewicz, narrating the 1946 pacification act against civil Orthodox Belarusian population. And finally, there is the example of Wierszalin, a geo-historical event, which is textualized in Włodzimierz Pawluczuk’s literary reportage Wierszalin. Reportaż o końcu świata, and in the Wierszalin Theatre performances directed by Piotr Tomaszuk. These works substantiate the thesis of the rescue function of regional literature.

The multifaceted, complex and historically variable relationships between the nation, the region and literature can be discussed from various points of view. In the paper, I focus on two aspects. The first one concerns the intertwining of national and regionalist ideas and its impact on the development of literary re-gionalism. The other one concerns regional literature as such and its contribu-tion to the creation of a national narrative. In the paper, I demonstrate that the reference to the national context makes it possible to track once again the de-velopment of literary regionalism, as well as read regional works anew. This is linked to the contemporary revaluation of regional works and its treatment as an important voice in the debate on the civil society and the nation.

Der 1891 von Hans Hoffmann veröffentlichte Text Der Teufel vom Sande erschien in einer Novellensammlung, die sich mit der Geschichte und dem geläufigen Bild Pommerns auseinandersetzte. Der damals populäre Text schildert eine fiktive Geschichte vor historischem Hintergrund. Neben seiner Unterhaltungsfunktion – die Liebesgeschichte ist für den Plot relativ wichtig – spielt die literarische Auseinandersetzung mit dem Kulturerbe und der Identität der Pommern um 1900 eine gewichtige Rolle. Auf Stereotypen basierend – und diese humoristisch nutzend – bot Hoffmann eine Vision Pommerns an, die zum Zeitpunkt der Entstehung des Deutschen Reiches von Bedeutung war. Heute kann sie nur noch historisch rekonstruiert werden.

Der Teufel vom Sande was published in 1891 in a collection of short stories which tackled the history and the common image of Pomerania. The text, classified as historical fiction, was popular at the time of its publishing. Apart from its role as a piece of entertainment – a love story plays a relatively important part in the narrative – the short story divagates about the cultural heritage and the identity of Pomerania’s inhabitants around 1900. Basing on stereotypes – and using them for humorous purposes – Hoffmann proposed a vision of Pomerania that was of vital significance at the time of the German Reich’s foundation. Nowadays it can only be historically reconstructed.

The article presents the motif of the Białowieża Forest in the literature for children at the turn of the 21st century. The writers use the literary topos of the foresthome in their description of this place, they idealize the presented world and point out not only the values of nature but also the axiological and existential ones. Writers build the literary myth of the forest as mother-nature, in which the main place belongs to the bison. The Białowieża Forest has got its own storytellers, who create fabulous stories, full of universal as well as regional and borderland elements. Contemporary works with the motif of the Białowieża Forest in literature for children also helps readers shape a positive and responsible attitude towards nature.

Zebrany materiał należy do kategorii badań nad regionalizmem i antropologią literatury polskiej, stanowiąc dokumentację wytworów kultury powstałych w małych strukturach społecznych oraz siły ich społecznego oddziaływania na procesy związane z ochroną kultury w regionie warmińskim po roku 1945. W tym kontekście literatura regionalna i lokalni twórcy kultury wywierają wpływ na możliwości wytwórcze miejscowej kultury, co przekłada się bezpośrednio na rozwój i konsolidację potencjału twórczego kultury miejscowej.

The article documents the work of the local poet Teofila Bobko-Jankowska (1920–2009), who is associated with the Warmian town of Biskupiec. The collected material on the subject falls within the category of studies on regionalism and on the anthropology of Polish literature, documenting the cultural products of small social structures as well as the strength of their social influence on the processes of the preservation of culture in the Warmia region after 1945. In this context, regional literature and local creators of culture influence the expansion of the productive capacities of the local culture, which translates directly into expansion and consolidation of the local culture’s productive potential.

A review of the 2016 monograph by Karolina Pospiszil Swojskość i utrata. Obrazy Górnego Śląska w literaturze polskiej i czeskiej po 1989 roku [The Familiar and the Loss. The Images of Upper Silesia in Polish and Czech Literatures after 1989] concentrating upon the properties of the Auther's work, which decide about its interdisciplinary character and testify to her solid grounding in the research methodology (geocriticism), while allowing her to retain a unique poetics, adequate to the historical conditioning and the history of the described region.
