The author analyzes derivatives from the old Slavic root *seb-/*sob- and presents two different lines of the semantic derivation: (a) 'something that is distinct, peculiar' and (b) 'something that is / should be appropriated by the subject'. The central position in the first, older, set of derivatives belongs to the substantive osoba 'person'.

The paper discusses changes that took place in the ways of expressing reflexivity in Old English. The study examines and evaluates the two most common forms conveying reflexivity: the use of personal pronouns and the reflexive pronoun self. The Early Old English personal pronouns were able to convey a reflexive relation, but, probably in order to avoid ambiguity, the personal pronoun began to be accompanied by the pronoun self in sentences rendering a reflexive meaning. The paper also contains an account of self used on its own, which was mostly employed in structures with emphatic meanings. Moreover, the work will adduce an example of an Old English inherently reflexive verb. The data come from the Dictionary of Old English corpus.

The article deals with the functions of the reflexive morpheme sě in Old Czech. Three types of constructions containing the reflexive form are described: (1) constructions with the accusative form of the reflexive pronoun, (2) constructions that express spontaneous events, and (3) agent-demotion constructions. We focus on the most important syntactic and semantic characteristics of these constructions and also treat the criteria of animacy of the syntactic subject and verbal aspect. The constructions we describe are considered to be prototypes, hence they have no clear boundaries and therefore ambiguous cases whose interpretation is not clear can be found in the data. We thus pay attention to several types of these cases. Although all three construction types are to be found also in Modern Czech, the Old Czech constructions considerably differ from the Modern Czech ones. We therefore point out the most important of these differences.

Artykuł stanowi omówienie najnowszej monografii autorstwa Romy Sendyki. Od kultury „ja” do kultury „siebie”. O zwrotnych formach w projektach tożsamościowych przybliża zatraconą w procesie tłumaczenia koncepcję podmiotowości, która w znaczący sposób rozróżnia pojęcia „ja” oraz „siebie”. Autorka monografii przytacza stan badań z wielu dziedzin humanistyki i neuronauk, przybliża różnice znaczeniowe przywoływanej terminologii, omawia propozycje translatorskie i konfrontuje je z przykładami literackimi.
