Content available remote How threatened is the Polish wetland flora?
100%
EN
Wetlands cover almost 14% of the area of Poland, but most of them are in bad condition. This paper aims are compiling an up-to-date Polish list of wetland species based on the data on their distribution and threat status in individual regions. 609 species were analyzed and their respective threat categories were examined in 13 local lists. It has been shown that 65% of the wetland species are classified as threatened taxa in at least one red local list. The data were used to create a formula for calculating the new threat category for each of the species. The resulting red list of wetland species includes 283 taxa.

The recently revised check-list of diatoms found in Germany contains 1437 taxa (1632 taxa have been recorded for Central Europe). Clear correlations with ecological conditions were established for 1000 taxa (70% of 1437). 267 predominantly marine taxa also occur in inland waters; they penetrate progressively into rivers contaminated with industrial waste waters. 61 taxa are aerophilic and 164 eutraphentic, 91 tolerant to all trophic conditions. Very few species in these ecological groupings are endangered. However, at last 417 oligo- or slightly mesotraphentic taxa are included in the "Red List". This strongly indicates that conserving oligo- and dystrophic waters as well as lower mesotrophic habitats can best protect species diversity.

Symptoms of anthropogenic changes in the vascular plant flora include the spread of some species groups and the extinction of others. Also habitat condition changes (eutrophication, pollution etc.) and biodiversity loss (at a regional, national and even continental scale) should be mentioned. Numerous papers with rare plant species localities and endangered habitats have been published but the extinction processes and scale of this phenomenon in urban areas where environmental conservation is crucial, are not often analysed. The aim of the present study is to estimate species loss in the vascular plant flora of the town Strzelce Opolskie (Chełm, Silesian Upland) on the basis of the floristic literature and botanical surveys carried out from 2011 to 2013. A comparison has been made between the list of species reported up to 1945 and those species currently occurring in the study area. As a result, a list of 99 species included in the red list of plants of Opole and Silesian voivodeships is presented. Among this group, 45 species are not confirmed after 1945. Numerous extinct and endangered species are from families: Orchidaceae (8 species), Cyperaceae (7 species), Ranunculaceae (7 species) and Lamiaceae (6 species). Strongly represented are species associated with the communities of Festuco-Brometea and Querco- Fagetea classes. From the species presented, 18 species are included in "Red List of Vascular Plants of Poland" (MIREK ET AL. 2006). It was found that the extinct species represent about 7% of Strzelce Opolskie vascular plant flora. It is a focus point for local authorities to protect botanically valuable areas. Actually, the only Miejski Park is under the conservator's protection and there are few individual trees protected due to their age or size.

A preliminary red list of threatened lichens of Lower Silesia (SW Poland) is presented. Species have been valuated according to the Red Data Book Categories (IUCN). The list comprises 602 taxa (ca. 60% of the whole lichen flora of Lower Silesia). 52 species are considered as rare (category R), 84 - as vulnerable (V), and 63 species - as endangered (E). The Silesian lichen flora is characterized by great numbers of taxa with extinct (Ex -140 taxa), and indeterminate (I - 263 taxa) categories.

During the survey of the Mały Borek nature reserve (Augustów Forest, NE Poland) 236 species of vascular plants were recorded, including 10 plant species red-listed in Poland and 19 species protected under the Polish law. The most valuable species were sedges typical of the boreal coniferous forests: Carex vaginata, C. globularis and C. loliacea. The presence of neophytes was very limited (1,3% of the flora) in the area studied. The principal aim of the establishment of the reserve was the conservation of old-growth coniferous forests with long ecological continuity. Since the reserve studied consists mainly of old-growth coniferous forests, the number of species regarded as ancient forest indicators is lower (54 species) than in the well-preserved reserves with deciduous stands in north-east Poland, but still rather high. The most valuable, threatened species are bound to wetland forests that are presently disturbed due to drainage. Restoration of the former hydrological conditions is essential for the preservation of the vascular plants in the reserve.

The first regional list of threatened lichens in the Polish East Sudetes is presented. The list is a result of investigation studied in the Śnieżnik Massif and the Bialskie Mountains. The status of listed lichen species has been evaluated according to the Red List Categories by IUCN (2001, version 3.1). The data obtained were compared with historical ones. Changes of the species main frequency were used as an additional indicator of their threat status. The Red List includes 227 taxa of lichens, which constitute 50% of the local biota and 14% of Polish biota. The status of threatened biota has the following categories: Regionally Extinct (RE) 78 taxa, Critically Endangered (CR) 12, Endangered (EN) 14, Vulnerable (VU) 8, Near Threatened (NT) 30, Least Concern (LC) 15 and Data Deficient (DD) 70. The most threatened are epiphytes typical of deciduous forests.
