The author attempts to answer the question why (and what for) new translations of already translated literary works are published. She gives the examples of various Polish translations of Alice in Wonderland, Winnie the Pooh, Lord Jim, Osudy dobrého vojáka Švejka za světové války and the Bible. Among the reasons for creating new translations she enumerates: the need to modernize the archaic language of an old translation; a desire to direct a given text at a specific target group, e. g. young children or adolescents; social and political changes resulting in changes in mentality and customs; policies of publishing houses and ambitions of translators, who want to prove they can make a new translation better, more compelling and closer to the letter of the original than the previous ones.
