Sanfilippo disease (mucopolysaccharidosis, MPS IIIA) is one of the types of mucopolysaccharidosis associated with extensive neurological effects and somatic symptoms. The consequences of neurodegeneration and cognitive impairment are manifested in challenges with the daily functioning of patients who experience problems with communication and following instructions. The aim of this study was to assess the cognitive functioning of three patients with MPS IIIA and to find patterns of neurodegeneration and to make their environment more friendly. Three boys (from 5.5 to 7 years) with MPS IIIA participated in the study. Each participant attended two meetings, and his functioning was assessed by three independent person (using two-way mirror). We used Bayley’s Scale III with some modifications. Interviews with parents were also included. The communication of patients was limited to some vocalizations. Patients presented instrumental use of items, but not all of them were able to repeat actions after diagnostician or presented object permanence. The results showed that the cognitive functioning of participants was significantly hindered by problems related to motor dysfunction, hyperactivity, and ataxia. The psychological data was collated with medical results. This study allows indicating new sources giving the possibility of child phenotype variability and to create specific interventions in the field of psychological therapy for patients with MPS IIIA and their families.

Family – as each social phenomenon – is for researchers a methodological challenge, which means answering the questions: How to investigate family? Which methods to use? And how to achieve research goals? Among many realized research projects in pedagogy, family sciences, sociology and social anthropology, the paper proposes application of qualitative research methodology in family studies based on constructivist assumptions. Benefits and cost of such research made through observation, interviews, documents analysis will be the subject of interest in the article based on a case study made by the author. The paper is not the whole analysis of qualitative research methods due to many textbooks and papers concerning such topics. The aim of the paper is to present possibilities of using qualitative methodology in family research.

An increased interest in qualitative research is connected with the revival of the discussion on reliability and credibility of research conducted by qualitative methods. The aim of the article is to present certain selected issues related to conducting qualitative research. Relatively common research methods used in this area are a case study and, well established in the literature on educational research, participatory action research. Other important methods are observations and interviews that are often used as a way of collecting qualitative data, which, supplemented by actual writing, are already recognized as research methods. Finally, the article describes problems of researcher’s positioning towards subjects and the social justice pedagogy based on the concept of service learning (learning in the service of society).

This contribution is a theoretical study of the figures of speech used by speakers during qualitative in-depth interviews. The aim of the text is, first, to explore the procedures and figures speakers use when narrating and, second, how such figures can be developed later in a specialist text or article. How memories are presented by the narrator and how it can be used by the researcher in a text, is the two main questions this article is about. Using the author’s own empirical material, fourteen figures of speech are described in detail, showing which figures may enhance the credibility of a high quality research report.

This paper analyses values in punk subculture. It defines the punk subculture as one of the natural environments of education and as such an important subject of Social Education. The use of the term ‘subculture’ in an age which is defined as ‘post-subculture’ is also discussed. The research is based on qualitative semi-structured interviews with seven young members of the punk subculture. Creative values, social and environmental values, material values, and the value of fun. Finally, the study tries to uncover values which are partly hidden and ascribed to other subcultures.

Current psychological research is dominated by a quantitative approach, which may be deduced from the number of research papers published at home and abroad; this applies to the research into quality of life as well. What is more, research endeavours utilizing both research strategies in the area of quality of life are rare. The objective of the paper is to present results of psychological research from a different area, in which mixed methods were successfully implemented, and to suggest alternatives for their employment in research into quality of life. The objective was reached in two ways: a) by describing five different pieces of research which use "mixed methods" in their analysis of teaching process, and by offering alternatives of their use within research into quality of life, b) by presenting a brief description of a suggestion of how to apply "mixed methods" in research into quality of life, which is a result of the author´s own research in the given area.

The aim of this article is to shed light on diverse problems a researcher might encounter in the process of conducting field research on difficult phenomena which are often enough, resistant to immediate cognition. Drawing on specific experiences and research situations, in the context of data collection techniques applied during the study, the focus is here on the importance of self-reflection regarding one’s own research behaviour at every stage of developing a study. It is also indicated in this article that specific standards of conducting a research are often of no use when it comes to research practice, what a researcher refers to, dealing with specific dilemmas, back to his/her experience in the field work or one’s intuition. Therefore, with an eye to expedite research projects regarding difficult phenomena, reflections on methodological and ethical dilemmas – along with difficulties resulting from one’s bodily constraints – that emerged during the study regarding female prostitution within the universe of escort agencies are presented in this article.

viding sex services in escort agencies. Escort agencies, where women provide sex service to men, are a specific context of generating and maintaining masculinity. Individual and collective visits of men in escort agencies are an opportunity to develop and present their own vision of masculinity. It takes place both in the generally accessible space of the agency towards other visitors, and during the sex meeting, alone with a female sex worker. Based on interviews with escort agencies’ employees three types of masculinity presented by clients can be reconstructed: obvious masculinity, problematic masculinity (with following subtypes: uncertain, unfulfilled and denied) and non-masculinity. Every type relates to different expectations as to the course of the meeting, and with different manners of treating the female sex workers. The article is based on qualitative data (interviews and observations), collected during the research project regarding work situation of women in escort agencies.

The starting point of this article is the relationship of art and science from the perspective of epistemological and ontological insights of philosophers of science and researchers of contemporary art. Further on, the author presents the specificity of the interaction of art and pedagogy, in which the complex subject of the latter opens the field to various sources, styles and languages of knowing and understanding of the world and the human being (including the language of the arts). Seeing art as an important exploration tool for the analysis of education in qualitative pedagogical research, the author summarizes the assumptions of visual ethnography – a research method that, as she explains, oscillates between art and science (with its methodological appeal to the image as the primary medium of the art). In the conclusion, she indicates cognitive and practical benefits which may result from using the concepts that derive from the arts as a source of knowledge about the educational reality.

Qualitative research is specifically based on data gathered from various sources. One of such sources are fieldnotes recorded by researchers in the form of memoirs, personal diaries, institutional records, and various notes taken in the course of field research. Recorded according to very individual and personal criteria, fieldnotes are not designed to be presented to external readers. Nevertheless, a large proportion of such notes is included in the final research report. Based on my personal research experience, in this paper I discuss the role and research potential of recorded and then properly processed fieldnotes.

The aim of this study was to develop a Matrix of Analysis for Sports Tasks (MAST), regardless of the sports activity, based on practice classification and task analysis. Being this a qualitative research our main question was: in assessing sports’ structure is it possible to make the characterization of any discipline through context and individuals’ behaviours? The sample was within a surf discipline in a competition flowing having 5 of the top 16 Portuguese surfers training together. Based on a qualitative method, studying the surf as the main activity was an interpretative study case. The MAST was applied in four phases: taxonomy; tasks and context description; task analysis; teaching and performance strategies. Its application allowed the activities’ characterization through the observation, surfer’s opinions and bibliographical support. The triangulation of the data was used as an information data treatment. The elements were classified by the challenges proposed to the practitioners and the taxonomy was constituted by the sport activities, group, modality and discipline. Surf is a discipline of surfing which is a sliding sport modality, therefore, a nature sport. In the context description, we had the wave’s components and constraints and the surfboards’ qualities. Through task analysis we obtained a taxonomy of surf manoeuvres. The structural and functional analysis allowed finding solutions for learning of surf techniques with trampoline and skateboards because these fit in sliding sports. MAST makes possible the development of strategies that benefit teaching and performance intervention

This paper presents the attitudes and behaviour of young consumers towards food waste based on a pilot qualitative research and data published in the literature. Qualitative research was conducted with the use of focus grou p method, with approximately 8–10 selected students per group. Four focus group sessions were held, with open discussion led by a moderator and the scenario containing problematic issues. The study included a total of thirty-seven students, aged 22– 25 years. Studies have shown that negative attitude of household towards food waste is not frequently refl ected in consumers’ behaviour, despite their fundamental knowledge on how to reduce food waste. Respondents emphasized the need for educational campaigns. Properly selected and presented information will stimulate both consumer’s attitude and behaviour.

This article discusses results of empirical research conducted in selected Catholic shrines in Poland (Gietrzwałd, Jasna Góra, Licheń, Kraków-Łagiewniki, Kalwaria Zebrzydowska, Niepokalanów, Święta Lipka, Piekary Śląskie and Wiktorówki). During the field research I collected various qualitative and quantitative data related to the phenomenon of sanctuary space and its popularity among visitors in contemporary Polish society. I was investigating various symbolic actions, interactions and processes that were performed by pilgrims and tourists visiting the shrines. Analytical tools I use for interpretation of field research data include: frame analysis (of an act of visiting a place of worship), and an analysis of metaphors (which were used by interviewees in their descriptions of shrines and their descriptions of experiences within sanctuaries’ spaces).

Political science research on the civil activity are mostly concentrated on the quantitative approach, the results of such research allow for determining the scale of a phenomenon, comparing the situation on the defined areas, they also provide the possibility to observe tendencies and changes. The aim of the article is to present the use of qualitative methods in the completed research on the civil activity of secondary school students in Kraków, where focusing on the part of a reality allowed for observing the group in context and better understanding of the phenomenon. The article presents basic fortes and weaknesses of the quantitative and qualitative studies, as well as possibilities of secondary data analysis. The analysis results of the study conducted using the observation and interview (individual and group) methods and preliminary conclusions, which can be useful for quantitative research preparation for the 13–16 age group have been presented in the article. The realization of both quantitative and qualitative research does not, however, give a certain answer for all the research questions and brings many new challenges.

The article presents the basic concepts and methodological procedures of grounded theory methodology that uses visual data and is called visual grounded theory. It uses the visual data to con¬struct categories, theoretical properties of categories for action and visual phenomena that manifest themselves as processes. Present article introduces, therefore, the rules and procedures for visual grounded theory based on both my own, and other authors research experience. In order to bet¬ter illustrate the procedures in question, there are presented examples of these studies. The visual analysis is conducted at four levels: creating an image, its presentation, its content and structure and its reception. It is the basis for the concept of multislice imagining and visual grounded theory helps to reconstruct it.

The study presents the problem of an appropriate and comprehensive shaping of the living environment of senior citizens in institutional care, i.e. creation of a most accessible built environment for them. The currently prevailing conditions in Polish care institutions for senior citizens are continuously improving, however they do not completely fulfil modern requirements and European standards expected from such institutions. In order for such a facility to provide an appropriate living environment for senior citizens and function efficiently, they cannot be based only on precisely defined guidelines and design principles. They have to be based on knowledge concerning senior citizens, their problems, needs and expectations; they also have to take into account the results of qualitative research based on the principles of universal design and ergonomics.

The article examines the Czech educational praxis toward integration of immigrant children. Although the number of immigrant children increased during past several years, Czech national educational policy still lacks specific measures which would systematically promote inclusive education and integration of immigrant children. The article aims to describe the experience of schools with integration of immigrant children at schools, and to identify the most important barriers that prevent full participation of immigrant children according to accounts of interviewees. Based on 21 in-depth interviews with representatives of school staff in 11 Prague public-sector základní škola (ISCED 1+2) with higher share of immigrant children (5-20 %), the paper provides insight into diverse into the ways how schools deal with immigrant children, families ́ acculturation strategies and inclusive educational policy. The article concludes with a discussion of “immigrant paradox”, highly achieving minorities (particularly Vietnamese students).
