Introduction. The aim of the study was to analyze the relationship between proprioceptive and verbal tests on personality in both sexes separately due to existing proprioceptive differences in fine motor behavior between men and women in our previous studies [1, 2, 3]. Material and methods. 114 middle-aged participants from Belarus completed verbal tests (personality: Eysenck's EPQ, Big Five in Hromov's Russian adaptation, and Rosenberg's Self-esteem) together with Proprioceptive Diagnostics of Temperament and Character (by Tous). Complementary information, such as tests of time perception, was collected and used in correlative and ANOVA analyses with the use of SPSS v.19. Results. The relationship between proprioceptive variables in personality and individual differences, time perception and the results of verbal tests were determined for each sex subgroup and discussed. ANOVA results reflected the corresponding differences and similarities between men and women in the variables of each test. Time perception was found to be significantly correlated to all five dimensions of the Big Five Test in both sexes, and both had a significant relationship to the same variables of the DP-TC test. Conclusions. Time perception can be used as an indirect indicator of personality. Existing individual and personality differences should be taken into account in coaching and education to obtain more effective results.

Functional changes following whole body vibration (WBV) training have been attributed to adaptations in the neuromuscular system. However, these changes have mainly been observed in the lower extremity with minimal change to the upper extremity. The purpose of the study is to examine the acute effect of shoulder vibration on joint position sense and selected muscle performance characteristics (peak torque, time to peak torque, and power). Forty young individuals (19.84 ± 1.73 yrs, 171.41 ± 7.73 cm, 70.07 ± 9.32 kg) with no history of upper body injuries were randomly assigned to an experimental (Vibration) or control (No-Vibration) group. To assess shoulder proprioception, active and passive joint position senses were measured on both internal and external rotation of the shoulder. The muscle performance variables (peak torque and time to peak torque) were measured using isokinetic dynamometer with the velocity of 60°/sec. After three bouts of 1 minute vibration training, the experimental group demonstrated a significant improvement in the internal rotation peak torque, time to peak torque and external rotation time to peak torque (p<0.05). However, no-significant differences were revealed for joint position sense, external rotation peak torque, and time to peak torque between the groups. Our findings suggest that short bouts of vibration treatment have a significant effect on shoulder muscle characteristics.

Purpose. In most circumstances it is possible to provide the precise estimation of force and weight by means of kinesthetic differentiation. In some conditions, like physical effort or fatigue, kinesthetic differentiation can become reduced. The kinesthetic differentiation capacity can be expressed as repeatability of muscular contraction force or movement. The present study investigates the direction of changes in kinesthetic differentiation of force applied by both arms during elbow flexion and extension before and after exercise. Basic procedures. The study sample consisted of 23 cyclists (mean ± SD) aged 18.1 ± 1.8 years, 17 rowers aged 18.1 ± 1.8 years, and a control group consisting of 32 subjects aged 21.3 ± 1.3 years. All subjects performed a progressive exercise test. Kinesthetic differentiation was measured as the repeatability of force applied during elbow flexion and extension. Main findings. The results obtained confirm that kinesthetic differentiation in both arms after exercise improved by means of elbow extension. Further research can contribute to the development of ways of control of adaptation changes in the central nervous system and the locomotor system on a general level, since the studies so far have described either local changes, e.g. EMG, or provided specific data related to typical patterns of activity in a given sport. Conclusions. The proposed method allows identification of effects of intense exercise on the kinesthetic differentiation capacity on a more general level.

Purpose. The aim of the study was to compare the spatial component of proprioceptive ability by reproducing a upper limb movement typical in table tennis and fencing. Methods. The research comprised 41 young males of which 12 were table tennis players, 14 fencers, and 15 not involved in any competitive sports as a control. The experiment was based on assessing the precision of pronation and supination of the forearm at the elbow joint in recreating a set movement range by use of a goniometer. Results and conclusions. The results point to a higher level of proprioceptive ability in fencers and table tennis players than the control group but only in respect to the tasks executed with the dominant limb. This is inferred to be the result from the specific character of both sports (i.e. the intensive use of one limb and the consequent laterality of that limb) causing higher sensitivity and proprioception. This may provide a link between swordplay, table tennis, and the level of proprioception. The research methodology used herein may be useful in monitoring fencing training. Although not unequivocally statistically significant, the results indicate the potential for further research in this area.

Purpose. Accurate shooting in basketball is a prerequisite for success. Coordination ability, one of the abilities that determine the repeatability of accurate shooting, is based on kinesthetic differentiation. The aim of the study was to evaluate the strength component of kinesthetic differentiation ability and determine its relationship with shooting accuracy. Methods. Peak muscle torque of the elbow extensors under static conditions was measured in 12 young basketball players. Participants then reproduced the same movement at a perceived magnitude of 25%, 50%, and 75% of static peak torque, with error scores calculated as a measure of kinesthetic differentiation. The results were compared with players’ field goal percentages calculated during game play in a regional championship. Results. No statistically significant relationships were found between the level of kinesthetic differentiation ability and field goal percentage. Additionally, no upper limb asymmetry was found in the sample. Conclusions. The relatively high levels of elbow static peak torque suggest the importance of upper limb strength in contemporary basketball. The lack of a statistically significant difference between the right and left limbs decreases the risk of suffering injury. It is likely that choosing other suitable tests would demonstrate the relationships between field goal percentage and kinesthetic differentiation ability.

This study aimed to examine the gender differences in postural stability among 8-12 year-old children. Twenty-six children participated in this repeated measures study to measure the centre of pressure (COP) under one normal condition (CONTROL: hard surface, eyes open, and looking straight ahead) and two challenging sensory conditions (ECHB: eyes closed and head back; and EOCS: eyes open and compliant surface) in randomized order. Girls had significantly lower COP path velocity (COP-PV, p < 0.05, medium effect), smaller radial displacement (COP-RD, p < 0.05, medium effect), and lower area velocity (COP-AV, p < 0.05, medium effect) as compared to boys when the three conditions were pooled. Gender differences were found in the percentage changes in COP-RD during ECHB (p < 0.05, large effect) and EOCS (p < 0.05, medium effect), and in COP-AV during both ECHB and EOCS conditions (p < 0.05, medium effect). Postural stability performance of girls had higher correlations with age (-0.62 vs. -0.40), body mass (-0.60 vs. -0.42), foot length (-0.68 vs. -0.45), and physical activity level (-0.45 vs. 0.02), as compared to boys. Girls had better postural stability than boys but were more affected by altered sensory input information. Girls are more capable of integrating their sensory inputs, whereas boys treat each sensory input somewhat separately and rely more on somatosensory feedback. Exercises such as standing on unstable surfaces with eyes open instead of eye closed and head back are more beneficial to children's postural stability control system.

Evidence supporting performance enhancing effects of kinesiotape in sports is missing. The aims of this study were to evaluate effects of kinesiotape applications with regard to shooting and throwing performance in 26 amateur soccer and 32 handball players, and to further investigate if these effects were influenced by the players’ level of performance. Ball speed as the primary outcome and accuracy of soccer kicks and handball throws were analyzed with and without kinesiotape by means of radar units and video recordings. The application of kinesiotapes significantly increased ball speed in soccer by 1.4 km/h (p=0.047) and accuracy with a lesser distance from the target by -6.9 cm (p=0.039). Ball velocity in handball throws also significantly increased by 1.2 km/h (p=0.013), while accuracy was deteriorated with a greater distance from the target by 3.4 cm (p=0.005). Larger effects with respect to ball speed were found in players with a lower performance level in kicking (1.7 km/h, p=0.028) and throwing (1.8 km/h, p=0.001) compared with higher level soccer and handball players (1.2 km/h, p=0.346 and 0.5 km/h, p=0.511, respectively). In conclusion, the applications of kinesiotape used in this study might have beneficial effects on performance in amateur soccer, but the gain in ball speed in handball is counteracted by a significant deterioration of accuracy. Subgroup analyses indicate that kinesiotape may yield larger effects on ball velocity in athletes with lower kicking and throwing skills.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of an increasing number of training hours of specific highintensity karate training on postural sway in preadolescent karate athletes. Seventy-four karatekas were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 groups: Karate Group (KG=37): age 10.29±1.68 yrs; or Control Group (CG= 37): age 10.06±1.77 yrs. The KG performed two sessions per day for 1 week in total, while the CG performed only 3 sessions during the same period. The center-of-pressure length (COPL) and velocity (COPV) were recorded under four different experimental conditions: open eyes (EO), closed eyes (EC), open eyes monopodalic left (EOL), open eyes monopodalic right (EOR), pre as well as post training intervention. Post-camp results indicated significant differences between the groups in the COPL p<0.001; an interaction of training type×time in the COPV (p<0.001) and an interaction of training type×time (p=0.020). The KG revealed an improvement in the COPL from pre to post-camp under conditions of EO [-37.26% (p<0.001)], EC [-31.72% (p<0.001)], EOL [-27.27% (p<0.001)], EOR [-21.44% (p<0.001)], while CG revealed small adaptations in conditions of EO (3.16%), EC (0.93%), EOL (-3.03%), EOR (-0.97%). Furthermore, in the KG an improvement in the COPV from pre to post-camp was observed in conditions of EO [-37.92% (p<0.001)], EC [-32.52% (p<0.001)], EOL [-29.11% (p<0.001)], EOR [-21.49% (p<0.001)]. In summary, one-week of high intensity karate training induced a significant improvement in static body balance in preadolescent karate athletes. Karate performance requires high-levels of both static and dynamic balance. Further research dealing with the effect of karate practice on dynamic body balance in young athletes is required.

Autorzy proponują zmianę istniejącego status quo wykorzystując innowacyjną, dobrze sprawdzoną i potwierdzoną naukowo metodę treningu propriocepcji z wykorzystaniem urządzenia Delos Professional System zaproponowany przez Międzynarodowe Stowarzyszenie Propriocepcji i Postawy.

The fact that we live longer and longer should not be associated with the necessary disability reducing the so necessary for the human being motor activity. However, the functional efficiency of the human organism is determined by the independent from him system of supervision and control of the central nervous system (CNS) drawing information for the purpose of the most appropriate management from very numerous receptors scattered across the whole organism. No doubt, particularly in the process of ageing, the decisive role in retention of motor efficacy is played by proprioceptors. The declining with age efficiency of these structures is also responsible for an increasing number of falls in case of the 50+ age group. Consequences of falls in case of elderly people are also the problem for employers who are obliged to incur costs thereof, especially when the employee is important in the system of organisation of a given enterprise. The authors suggest change of the existing status quo making use of the innovative, well proved and scientifically confirmed method of training of proprioception with the use of the tool of Delos Professional System proposed by the International Society of Proprioception and Posture.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study is to demonstrate the relationship between functional shortening of the rectus femoris muscle, hamstring muscle and knee proprioception in patients after anterior cruciate ligament [ACL] rupture. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A group of 35 men with ACL rupture (without ACL reconstruction), aged 18 to 43 years (28 ± 7.4 years) was enrolled in the study. Firstly, the functional shortening of above mentioned muscles was evaluated in both healthy and injured lower limbs. Knee joint proprioception was assessed using a BTE Primus RS by examining the angular deviation from the center of the kinetic range in the knee joint with and without visual inspection. RESULTS: A statistically significant positive correlation was found between the functional shortening of the hamstrings and the proprioception of the flexion motion assessed under conditions without visual inspection. In addition, a statistically significant negative correlation was found between the functional shortening of the rectus femoris muscle of the injured lower limb and proprioception of the knee flexion movement assessed under conditions without visual inspection. CONCLUSIONS: A deficit of knee proprioception correlates with the functional shortening of the thigh muscles. Pa-tients with functional shortening of the rectus femoris have better knee proprioception. Patients with functional shortening of hamstrings have worse knee proprioception.

Background. Yachting requires specialist knowledge and the skills that guarantee safety while sailing in all weather conditions. Therefore it is essential to measure the effectiveness of training – in view of the limited number of hours available – in order to improve the teaching process. The main aim of the paper was to analyze the effectiveness of the teaching methods applied in sail training and to assess the changes occurred in the subjects’ ability to control their movements due to the training. Material and methods. The sample consisted of the first-year students (men and women) of the University School of Physical Education who took part in a sailing course in Olejnica. In the 30-hour specialist part of the training, the subjects learned to sail two sloop-type sailboats. The amount of the training time for each crew on a given training vessel was the same, and both crews were trained by experienced sailing instructors. Each student was supposed to master basic sailing maneuvers in 30 hours of training within 5 days. Before and after the experiment, the subjects were examined on a kinesthesiometer that registered the repeatability of the generated force in the upper limbs. These results were used to assess the effect of sailing on movement control in terms of the numerical assessment of kinesthetic differentiation ability on the basis of the generated power repeatability. Results. A 35-hour (5h theoretical part + 30h practical) sail training carried out in the traditional way – with an instructor on board the yacht – enables beginners to acquire basic yacht maneuvering techniques. The analysis proved that 35-hour sailing course does not significantly affect the repeatability of the generated power in the upper limbs. Conclusions. In the next phase of the research, the importance of a sailing instructor should be assessed in the process of teaching techniques of maneuvering on training yachts, such as Omega-class yachts or cabin yachts, equipped with electronic devices (GPS, chip log, anemometer) which enable precise collection of information on performed maneuvers.

Introduction: The upright posture uniquely characteristic of humans is dependent upon many factors. Kinesio Taping is used to enhance ankle joint stability, but its effectiveness in relation to body stability in a standing position has not yet been verified in scientific research. Objectives: Assessment of the effect of ankle Kinesio Taping on stabilometric parameters in young, healthy women. Material and Methods: The study included 50 healthy women (mean age 21.12 ±1.83 years) who were randomly assigned to two groups: the taping group (group T) and control group (group C). In the taping group Kinesio Taping was applied according to the method used in ankle sprains (both inversion and eversion). The women performed the Romberg test four times with each trial lasting two minutes on an Alfa AC International East stabilometric platform: two tests without Kinesio taping intervention and two further tests with (group T) or without taping (group C). Results: Significant differences between the groups were observed in the following parameters: mean speed in the sagittal plane with eyes open; 0.06 cm/s (p=0.0002), mean speed in the frontal plane with eyes open; 0.07 cm/s (p=0.0001), total path length with eyes open; 5.78 cm (p=0.0001) and sway area with eyes open; 0.58 cm2 (p=0.0002) and in parameters: mean velocity in the sagittal plane with eyes closed; 0.10 cm/s (p=0.0004), mean velocity in the frontal plane with eyes closed; 0.11 cm/s (p=0.0004) and in total path length with eyes closed; 0.43 cm (p=0.0004). Conclusions: In young, healthy women who received Kinesio Taping, favourable changes in stabilometric parameters were found indicating better ankle stability than in the group without taping.

Celami niniejszej pracy były: ocena wpływu uszkodzeń związanych z zaawansowaną gonartrozą na zmianę czucia głębokiego i kontroli sensomotorycznej stawu kolanowego, porównanie wyników uzyskanych we własnym teście kontroli sensomotorycznej z obiektywnymi metodami oceny czucia głębokiego, analiza zależności pomię- dzy poziomem czucia głębokiego i sprawnością układu sensomotorycznego a pomiarami stosowanymi w praktyce klinicznej. Materiał i metody. Wyniki. W ocenie za pomocą TKS i JPS grupa kontrolna uzyskała wyniki na poziomie odpowiednio 4,9 pkt i 3,9°, natomiast grupa 2 3,7 pkt i 6,7° (p<0,005). W grupie 1 uzyskano 3,2 pkt w TKS, natomiast w JPS 8,2° w kończynie zdrowej i 10,2° w kończynie chorej.

Introduction. The importance of sensorimotor control assessment as a crucial factor determining functional recovery is being increasingly appreciated in clinical practice. The aim of this study was to assess the inflence of damage associated with severe gonarthrosis on changes in proprioception and sensorimotor control of the knee, compare the results of a new sensorimotor control test developed by the authors with objective methods of proprioception assessment, and analyse the relation between the level of proprioception and sensorimotor system function and the measurements used in clinical practice. Material and methods. We studied a group of healthy persons (control group, n=74), patients with stage 4 knee osteoarthritis (group 1, n=67), and patients after total knee arthroplasty (group 2, n=62). The participants were assessed with a new sensorimotor control test (TKS) and a joint position sense test (JPS). Moreover, we analysed the patients’HSS knee scores and Stafflstein scores.results. In the Control Group, mean TKS and JPS test scores were 4.9 pts and 3.9°, respectively, while the respective results in group 2 were 3.7 pts and 6.7° (p<0.005). In group 1, the TKS score was 3.2 pts and the JPS test result was 8.2° in the unaffcted limb and 10.2° in the affcted limb. The results of this group were signifiantly worse than the scores achieved in the control group and group 2 (p<0.005). conclusions. 1. The new knee sensorimotor control test developed by the present authors appears to provide an objective and comprehensive method to evaluate sensorimotor control of the knee in patients with gonarthrosis and after total knee replacement. 2. Further studies of the new test are advised, including an objective evaluation of the test utilising specialised measuring tools.
