The figure of detournement can be defined as a dialogic phenomenon resulting from the embedding of two utterances into a single utterance. This study is focused on a specific use of this figure: the case of the lower-third in the satirical news broadcast genre. Using a corpus of 56 occurrences from the French TV show, Les Guignols de l’Info, we investigate the role of proper names in the construction of the implicit dialogic meaning inherent to detournements. Our hypothesis is that the spatially hierarchical structure of the two segments which form the lower-third, i.e. a spatially higher segment containing a proper name and a spatially lower one containing an utterance, corresponds to an enunciative hierarchy, in which the interpretation of the second segment relies on the first. We explore two functions that arise from this distinct structure: the nomination of the habitual user(s) of the proper name(s) and the attribution of direct reported speech to the said individual(s). Our aim is to show how these two functions are the result of a dialogic interaction between multiple discourses, activated by the different elements of which the lower-thirds are composed.

The aim of this paper is to analyze dysphemic uses of complex proper names which serve as a basis for the creation of what Robert Galisson (1994, 1995, 2000) called “palimpsestes verbo-culturels” (verbo-cultural palimpsests). We consider proper names as fixed sequences which can undergo the process of “défigement” (deconstruction) in the same way as any other complex lexical unit. We analyze the reasons for the creation of what we call “palimpsestes verbo-culturels propriels” (proprial verbo-cultural palimpsests) as well as the effects of meaning produced due to this creation and the means which make it possible.

Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie onimów najczęściej występujących w palindromach przy jednoczesnym uwzględnieniu różnorodności konstrukcji palindromicznych. Stanowi on próbę wytyczenia pewnych szlaków dla prowadzenia dalszych badań tego interesującego zagadnienia, jakimi są z jednej strony konstrukcja oraz semantyczna rekonstrukcja zdań symetrycznych, a z drugiej — formy występowania nazw własnych oraz ich specyfika.

The aim of the article is to describe those proper names which are most frequently used in palindromes and to present the variety of palindrome structures. The article is not an exhaustive study, but only suggests paths for further research of the following areas: the structure and semantic reconstruction of symmetrical sentences and the appearance and specificity of proper names in palindromes.

The aim of this article is to examine the social meaning of two proper names – Russie and Pologne – in French press discourse. Assuming that the social meaning of a given concept is constructed in the nomination process, it seems justified to examine the ways proper names – traditionally considered to be associated with specific referents – receive their social meaning through the act of nomination. The study of social meaning seems possible with the reconstruction of the so-called designational paradigm, which is a list of reformulations of the initial word. This study deals with two kinds of reformulations of country names: those that derive from a geopolitical vocabulary and those that derive from a geographical vocabulary. Comparing the role and functioning of these, we can assume that they serve two different discursive strategies: the westernisation of Russia and the orientalisation of Poland. The observation of the role and the function of these reformulations shows that the social meaning of both geographical names is no more than a discursive construct.

The paper describes typography as one of the mechanisms contributing to the construction of social meanings.According to the French discourse analysis, we assume that social meaning results from the nomination activity, which involves multiple and diverse naming of one element of the real world. Obtaining social meaning is possible by recreating the so-called designational paradigm, i.e. establishing a list of regular reformulations of the initial word introduced by metalanguage (definitional sentences), coordination, diaphors and typography. This work mainly focuses on the latter. The subsequent parts of the article discuss the impact of the comma, colon, parentheses, double dash and quotation marks on meaning construction. The description of each of them is complemented by examples derived from the study on the social meaning of the proper name Pologne (Poland), created and disseminated by the French press. It turns out that the typographic symbols are not a simple visual representation of pauses or intonation. They also have a semantic and pragmatic role. Typography signals the reformulations (comma, colon, parenthesis, dash), introduces the secondary predicates (comma, dash) and allows a journalist to distance him/herself from the created meanings (quotation marks).

The paper presents an analysis of Polish equivalents of the Russian proper name Kolobok. Their diversity results from insufficient familiarity with the Russian source text (a folk fairy tale) in Poland, which is caused by little acquaintance with the hero of the story and lack of a Polish equivalent of such a fairy tale character that carries the same communicative value. Examples in-cluded in the paper do not always preserve the communicative value of the context: in few cases, it had been assessed which elements of the meaning are relevant and significant, and which are redundant, i.e. semantically irrelevant. Provisional equivalents in most cases are based on the inner semantics of the discussed proper name.

The paper is an attempt to decipher the name of the brother of Mieszko I and place name where battle with german duke Hodon took place in 972, mentioned in Thietmar of Merseburg’s chronicle. They are only known from a single MLat. inscription as Cidebur, and from its Latinized form as Cidini . In an author’s view they should be delatinized as Siecebor and Sitno (Sitna). Based on a substition and transcription analysis, the author formulates a hypothesis concerning the location and progress of the battle.

Textological breakthrough in onomastics The article discusses the new perspective in research of proper names. The perspective means treating a proper name as a text unit, and consequently, identifying different types/kinds of onyms. The basis of this analysis is a monography by Małgorzata Rutkiewicz-Hanczewska “Onymical genology. Proper names on the motivational and communicative plane”.

This article discusses East Slavic male names that were found in a document dated 1668. These names were recorded both in their primary forms and as derivatives. The majority of registered derivatives were created by means of the suffixes: -uk and -ko. Iwan was the most popular name of the East Slavs, but names such as Wasiel, Wasil, Wasko, Danilo, Danielo, Fiedor, Chwidor, Chwiedor, Denis, Danis and Siemion were also frequently used.

In our paper we look into the topic of nicknames in the classroom. The attention is paid particularly to the relationship between the expressiveness of nicknames and the social status of the learners in the hierarchical structure of the classroom. On a selected instance of a single classroom, we examine and compare the status of individual learners which they have achieved (based on measuring their index of influence and popularity in the framework of their classroom). We also interpret the motivating stories behind the coinage of the nicknames and we try to find out whether there is any direct connection between the learners’ status in the classroom and positive/negative expressiveness of nicknames they have been given.

Acronyms are lexical units that have been thoroughly explored in terms of their morphology or pronunciation. However, their semantic value has not been entirely determined yet. The present paper aims at investigating the manner in which a semantic value of an acronym, and particularly a difference between proper and common acronyms, influences techniques applied to translating them. In order to achieve the aforementioned objective, on the basis of the cognitive theory of proper names, the authors have distinguished Polish and French acronyms being ergonyms as well as acronyms belonging to proper names and these designating item classification. The paper concerns the analysis of both Polish and French translations of ergonyms in foreign language press and French common acronyms in the Polish press. The performed analysis allows observing a tendency towards transferring acronymsergonyms that play the role of a rigid designator rather than full names in the target text. By contrast, the techniques of translating common acronyms differ, depending on whether they designate phenomena typical of the source culture or universal ones.

Every specialist text carries traces of the institutionalized context in which it is created. The context is based on the socially sanctioned communicative relationship, on the strength of which discourse partners enter into a so-called communicative contract. A text is then a verbal realization of contractual obligations, strictly standardized at the level of genre. Hence, information about the status of the discourse partners and the nature of their contractual (communicative) obligations is essential for accurate interpretation of a text. This, in turn, places double responsibility on the translator, who is obliged not only to transfer the discourse object into the target language, but also to “present” the sender of the original to the recipient of the translate in such a way as to render their status and discourse characteristics. Failing that, the translator will not succeed in reconstructing the original discourse contract, and hence attaining functional coherence of the translation. The aim of this article is to examine whether, and to what extent, translators have managed to present communicating subjects of Polish hospital discharge summary to the French recipient.

Multilingualism in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania as reflected in old antroponymsThis article analyses historical anthroponyms in the Vitebsk and Mogilyov areas of Belarus. The dialects of this area are categorised as transitional within the Balto-Slavic, West-East Slavic and Russian-Belorussian dialect continua. The materials used for the study are business texts from the 15–17th centuries as well as birth registers of the 17th and 18th centuries. The analysis has shown that in the eastern part of Belarus, the surnames of ancient knightly clans of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania are related to the history of a given territory. The anthroponyms reflect the phonetic, lexical, word-formation processes that have taken place in the languages of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. What is characteristic, the anthroponyms in the analysed region often mix and impose ranks. This has been caused by the difficulties in the development of antroponyms, as well as the interference of different languages and the cultural specifics of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.

The paper discusses a secondary, figurative meaning of the proper name Misiewicz that has evolved in the current political discourse in Poland. The data under examination have been retrieved during the years 2016-2017 from paper and electronic editions of Polish newspapers and magazines, including online commentaries and opinions of their readers. It is claimed that best documented and most frequent uses of the name Misiewicz/e [SG./PL.] exhibit a paragonic sense. Barcelona’s [2003, 2004] model was adopted in the explanation of the metonymic mappings underlying them.

Among names employed in proverbs, there are constituents which become proper names in the context of a proverb as a result of etymological reinterpretation. Such components acquire a meaning, an effect which is not characteristic of proper names. Their semantic load is conditioned by a possibility of two interpretations of the element in question: first, as a unit belonging to nomina propria, e.g. an anthroponym or a toponym; second, as a unit with a particular meaning, for instance, describing the person or the place named. The analysed components are not prototypical proper nouns, but rather pseudo-proper names. Proverbs containing such components are interesting from a stylistic perspective, since thanks to word play, they gain humorous markedness. The aim of the article is to shed light on this phenomenon by discussing Italian proverbs containing the components in question, analyzing the mechanisms of creating the possibility of etymological reinterpretation of proper names, describing kinds of these constituents and determining the number of reinterpreted components in the proverbs excerpted from a dictionary of Italian proverbs Dizionario dei proverbi italiani by Carlo Lapucci.

The purpose of the article is to consider a specific group of ergonyms associated with the regional culture, history, development, and geolocation of the Samara region. The article is aimed at finding out the main characteristic features of the names of enterprises and organizations (ergonyms) in Samara. The author uses descriptive comparative method. To provide the material and examples of ergonym, the methods of association, links and semantic map are used. The provided description makes us think that the regional peculiarities of ergonyms are an essential part of the national-cultural component. It can be realized with the help of the realities associated with geolocation or specific features of the social, cultural, historical, ethnic development of a state and nation as a whole. It can be concluded that modern trends affect the ergonymic space of a city and its ergonymicon. The national-territorial component is capable of performing a parole function. There are certain ergonymic models associated with territorial identity, including abbreviations and acronyms, as well as contaminations of different types. The analysis and the study results of Samara ergonyms are supposed to be a valuable material for investigation of proper names of enterprises, institution, firms etc. There are further prospects for studying a number of onomastic issues. The study results can be useful in solving brand and rebrand problems.
