The paper discusses a design process for proximity sensors that can be used to steering or guide the Blind Patient Vehicle (BPV,) to obtain ultrasonic monitoring of the nearby object leading to their recognition and localization. The objective of this paper was to develop an iterative process of engineering design that can be used to produce inexpensive proximity measuring devices tailored to the specific applications. The iterative process of engineering design is based on state transition diagrams. Since one-level state transition diagrams can be quite complicated, we discuss how to simplify them by using many levels of abstraction. The resulting multi-level state diagrams are shown. We discuss how to use such multi-level diagrams to model iterative engineering design on the example of a proximity sensor. In the summary we characterize the obtained design results.

W podsumowaniu scharakteryzowano uzyskane wyniki projektowe.

The critical revue of papers devoted classical approach to theory of design and design methodology is presented. The non classical approach to computer support of conceptual work in initial steps of machinery design process is proposed. This approach is based on application the virtual reality technology in supporting of conceptual work. The virtual reality technology allows the realistic simulation, generated in virtual space and active participation of decision makers in design process. The computer support of initial steps of Personal Electric Vehicle (PEV) design is considered as an example of this approach.

Design/methodology/approach: The numerical schemes row is considered for the complex vibroexitated constructions. Methods of decomposition and the numerical schemes synthesis are considered on the basis of new methods of modal synthesis. Findings: Development of mathematical models of complicated machines and buildings in view of their interaction with system of dynamic vibration absorbers. Dynamic vibration absorbers - complicated rotating machines system design optimized on vibro- absorption properties. Research limitations/implications: The research must be done for non-linear rotor dynamics. Practical implications: The absorbers designed in accordance with this paper can be applied not only to electric machines or aeronautic structures, but to any other type of vibro-exitated structure, such as cars, chisel installation, optical, magneto-optical disks, washing machine, refrigerator, vacuum cleaner, etc. Originality/value: The paper has novelty both in theoretical, and in practical aspect. In order that optimal parameters of DVA be determinate the complete modeling of dynamics of rotating machine should be made. Traditional design methodology, based on discontinuous models of structures and machines are not effective for high frequency vibration.

Purpose: The main purposes of the paper are to discuss designing and exploitation problems of machines used in strip mines and investigation of its reasons based on steering frame brake-down of the dumping conveyor. Design/methodology/approach: Numerical and experimental approach was used to investigate reasons of the break-down of the dumping conveyor. Numerical simulations based on the finite element method were used. Fractographic and microscopic evaluation and chemical analysis, were used to perform material evaluations. The objectives are achieved by analysis of the numerical simulations results of the broken part of machine and data coming from material evaluations. Based on the mentioned results conclusions concerning results of the failure were given. Additionally the new design of the steering frame half-shafts systems was discussed. Findings: The causes of break-down of the steering frame of dumping conveyor were found. Designing and manufacturing problems were the main reasons of the failure. The half shafts systems in undercarriages of the open pit machines are prone to break-downs. They require detailed analysis to be successfully implemented into steering system. Recommendations for the single shaft system are given in the paper. Research limitations/implications: in the half-shaft undercarriage system, the friction in the supporting areas limits horizontal forces acting on safetying. Investigations of the static and sliding friction coefficients should be performed to estimate correct forces and optimal designing rules. Practical implications: The study provides practical implication into designing of half-shafts undercarriage systems and their safetyings. Discussed design of the safetying should be redesigned or the half-shaft system should be changed into one shaft design. Originality/value: The paper provides information backed by evaluation and test results, stating the nexus of causes of the dumping conveyor failure. The experimental and numerical approaches show relationship between designing and manufacturing process of machines. This can be helpful for the designers and researchers looking for reasons, methods of investigations or how to prevent failures of similar machines.

Purpose: The aim of the paper is optimization of a control strategy used in a seal fatigue tester. Design/methodology/approach: Analytical approach has been applied to get an understanding of a heat exchange process. It is required to optimize the control process algorithm. Findings: The initial control algorithm has been improved regarding numerous tests under different operating conditions. The final version of the control program allows to maintain the temperature according to the on-off strategy minimizing the temperature oscillations and potential overshoots. Research limitations/implications: It should be considered a new control strategy based on PID controller. Practical implications: The major component of the tester is the heat exchanger. It consists of a tube and embedded pipe circuit feeding with the external heating or cooling medium. The tube is a cylindrical housing where the seals are assembled at both sides. Two main pumps circulate the medium at a specified flow rate and pressure. The temperature is maintained to hold it almost constant during heating and cooling phases. Two thermocouples are placed close to the seals, and the one in the middle of the heat exchanger tube. The tester is equipped with a control system consisting of a PLC controller and LabView data acquisition application. It is possible to control the device remotely through LAN/WAN networks. The LabView application communicates with the controller via software with the use of PPI (Point-To-Point Interface) protocol. A new control algorithm has allowed to perform tests according to testing specification without significant overshoots. Originality/value: On-off control algorithm has been proposed for a combined heating-cooling installation rarely using in the industrial solutions.

Purpose: This paper describes the first step of a project that aims to improve the design and placement of dental prostheses through an in-depth analysis of jaw movement. This analysis requires prior obtaining quality digital models of all elements involved in the movement. The paper describes the process to obtain the digital models through Reverse Engineering techniques, and evaluates their quality. Design/methodology/approach: The process of digitalization of a human skull by means of a hand-held 3D laser scanner has been evaluated to see the suitability of this technique. A skull has been chosen as test element as it has several characteristics that make its digitisation by optical techniques difficult, such as a non-uniform surface and a complex geometry. The surfaces obtained by the scanner have been edited by point cloud edition software. Findings: Reverse Engineering optical hardware has several limitations to correctly digitize complex geometries, but these deficiencies can be solved using the Reverse Engineering software properly. Research limitations/implications: The same analysis should be performed by point clouds obtained through other Reverse Engineering technologies, such as structured light scanners. These technologies can achieve best values of accuracy and resolution, so that both results should be compared. Practical implications: This paper gives the chance to apply Reverse Engineering techniques to achieve high quality digital models of free form complex geometries. The constraints presented by optical digitization technologies can be solved through powerful point cloud edition software. Originality/value: This paper describes the process of digitalization of complex free form geometries and the subsequent point cloud edition.
