Within the framework of the theory of functional sentence perspective (Firbas 1992), the distinction between presentation and quality scale sentences plays a vital role. The present paper proposes to shed light on one of the most common configurations of presentation sentences, viz. structures with initial rhematic subject (e.g. an uninvited dwarf came), examining the way native speakers place the intonation centre in such structures, i.e. to map the correspondence between the degrees of communicative dynamism and prosodic prominence. For the purpose of the investigation selected chapters from Tolkien’s The Hobbit are used.

The notion of presentation (Darstellung) is a key concept of Truth and Method and of Gadamer’s hermeneutics as a whole. It has however many levels of meaning that this article seeks to sort out: presentation as 1) performance, 2) interpretation, 3) revelatory epiphany and 4) participation (festival). The aim of this article is to show how this strong conception of presentation makes it possible to understand the unity of Truth and Method and to grasp the non relativistic intent of its important theses on interpretation and language: in both cases, interpretation (or the linguistic expression) must be understood as the unfolding of meaning that stems from the work or the thing itself.

This article presents two opposing opinions on the condition of modern art. These have been authored by a philosopher, Jean-Luc Nancy, and a scholar in Indo-European culture, Bernard Sergent. The former states that modern art has very favorable conditions for development and presentation. In his opinion, most recent works of art constitute a continuation of Hegel’s figure of a young girl, discussed in the article on the example of Alina Szapocznikow’s sculpture Trudny wiek. The latter, however, judges the condition of art very severely, especially considering the situation of French museums and art galleries in recent years. This issue, however, has a much broader reach and can easily be applied to the situation in Poland. The author of the article does not settle this dispute, but leaves the final judgment to the reader.

New trends in education are one of the priorities of each educational institution. Quality, technical equipment of schools, knowledgeable educators, but above all the effort of leadership, whether the management to generate qualitative and innovative environment for teachers and pupils, is a guarantee of higher levels of education and subsequently, to education. Information-communication technologies (ICT) are increasingly becoming a part of not only the General, but also for vocational education. New technology, computer technology and software are intended to help in improving the level of creative abilities of teachers and students, which is the output of the qualitative growth of the pupil, and then the society. The contribution demonstrates several ways of using ICT and the associated interaction during class of Electrotechnics using whiteboard, presentation or demonstration workbook. Efficiency and quality of this teaching hours, is then compared with the traditional teaching. The relevant contribution is a stimulus to creativity of teachers and educators to provide students the highest possible quality of education that schools provide.

In the framework of Firbasian theory of functional sentence perspective (FSP), one of the cornerstones of analysis is represented by the distinction of the sentences that implement the Presentation or Quality Scales respectively. The present paper discusses corpus-based borderline cases in which it is difficult to unequivocally identify their functional perspective. The study makes use of both the English original narrative texts (fiction and biblical) and their Czech translation counterparts; such a contrastive approach is adopted to throw light on the dubious cases. In the discussion, the role of individual communicative units as well as the phenomenon of semantic affinity observed between the context-independent subject and the transitional verb is explored against the background of the four FSP factors, viz. context, linear modification, dynamic (and static) semantics, and intonation. The key question is the capacity of verbs to express existence/ appearance on the scene with explicitness or sufficient implicitness, which is triggered by the S-V semantic affinity and certain syntactic qualities.
