Bitter pit (BP) is a physiological disorder of apples which causes considerable losses in apple production. The occurrenęe of BP is related to: cultivar susceptibility, crop yield, presence of spur leaves, fruit size, fruit position on the tree, fruit/leaves ratio, mineral composition of apples (mainly calcium, potassium and magnesium contents), maturity of fruitat harvestand postharvest storage conditions. Fertilization, prunning, thinning, irrigation may influence the BP incidence. Beyond-root fertilization with calcium and dipping the apples in calcium solution are effective treatments to reduce BP. There is some evidence that BP is caused not only by calcium deficit in apples but also by some others factors.
