The author presents a genuine conception of national heritage developed by Stanisław Ossowski. Ossowski did not make use of the concept of tradition. He decided to focus only on one of its aspects. He focused on what he considered the awareness-related aspect of tradition that is the one that manifests itself through the inheritance of programmed attitudes towards the past and the artefacts that represent it. Hence, Ossowski’s cultural heritage is a collection of response patterns that are internalized by people through socialization processes. These response patters give the basis for the growth of attitudes of the particular members of a group towards the particular cultural texts and artefacts relating to the past.
