The sense of threat resulting from the potential overpopulation of our globe is not a new phenomenon. As early as in ancient times, philosophers raised concerns over the excessive number of people that could disturb the stability of the state. Looking at the current demographic situation in the world, the author of the paper focuses on potential consequences of human overpopulation as well as various strategies of preventing the negative consequences of this phenomenon. The conducted analyses show that the reduction of poverty is a morally uncontroversial method of overcoming difficulties related to the growing number of inhabitants of our planet.

This study aims to quantify the relative effects of density-dependent (feedback structure) and density-independent climatic factors (rainfall) in regulating the short-term population dynamics of wood mice Apodemus sylvaticus Linnaeus, 1758 in three Mediterranean forest plots. Rainfall and density explained additively 62% of variation in population growth rates (38 and 24%, respectively), with no differences among study plots. Population growth rate was positive during autumn–winter and negative during spring–summer during a 2.5-year period. Population rate of change was negatively affected by wood mouse density during the normal breeding season of Mediterranean mice (autumn–winter) but not outside it. Growth rate was positively affected by the cumulative amount of rainfall three months before the normal breeding season, but not during it. Female breeding activity and recruitment did not differ among plots, and was not affected by density or rainfall. However, recruitment was positively affected by density and, marginally, by rainfall. Our results suggest that intraspecific competition (density-dependence) and food availability (rainfall) are equally important factors driving wood mouse population dynamics in Mediterranean forests. Mechanisms underlying density-dependence during the breeding season seemed to be based on food-mediated survival rather than on behaviourally-mediated reproduction. Taken together, these results indicate a high sensitivity of marginal Mediterranean wood mouse populations to the expected climate changes in the Mediterranean region.

Favourable life conditions for Glycyphagus destructor (Schr.) are: temperature of 20 to 25°С and relative humidity of 75 to 85 per cent, and for Glycyphagus domesticus (De Geer) - temperature 15-25°С and relative humidity - 75-85%. The life cycle of G. destructor was completed in 13,0 days at 25°С and relative humidity of 85%. The female lays on the average 140.2 eggs. Factors of increase of population of this species are relatively high under these conditions: Rₒ - net reproduction rate = 69,54, rₘ - innate capacities for increase (per day) = 0,126, λ - finite rates of increase (females per female a day) = 1.134. These factors for G. domesticus under the same conditions are a little lower than in G. destructor: Rₒ = 53,74, rₘ = 0,116, λ = 1,123. The life history of G. domesticus takes, on the average, from 15.2 days at the temperature of 25°C and relative humidity 85%, to 33,5 days at 15°С and 85% R. H. The highest fecundity of this species amounts, on the average 118,5 eggs per female in its whole life under optimum conditions. T - mean length of generations (in days) of both the species are long, especially at a low temperature (5°С): for. G. destructor T = 123,67, for G. domesticus T = 101.75.
