In the first part of the text, the author tries to answer the question why the history and the victory of the Solidarity movement in the 1980s – one of the most important events in the contemporary history of Europe – is very rare in the Polish cinema. The author draws attention to the political factors (including historical policy), the commercial and narrative potential of the Solidarity movement and the reception of this phenomenon in Poland after 1989. In the second part, basing on the example of the anthology film “Solidarity, Solidarity ...”, the author shows how different authors of the Polish cinema (belonging to several generations and using different poetics, such as comedy, documentary, animation, video-clip or film drama) tried to include Solidarity into a movie narration. Finally, the author wonders what the word “solidarity” means for all these authors.
