The photoelectron emission (PE) from the cathode surface of a hollow cathode discharge (HCD) with a sub-breakdown bias applied, and hence no discharge present, was measured within the framework of an optogalvanic (OG) experimental arrangement. The work function dependence on the applied sub-breakdown voltage was investigated. The PE component in a real OG measurement was found to manifest itself as an instrumental effect together with nonresonant ionization which we call here space ionization (SP). The convolution of these components was determined experimentally as an instrumental function. A deconvolution procedure to determine the actual OG signal was developed.
W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań utleniania warstwy wierzchniej aktywowanej folii polietylenowej, wykonane metodą spektroskopii fotoelektronowej. Badano warstwy tej folii o średniej głębokości równej 0,6 nm, 1,9 nm i 3,7 nm, co odpowiada kątom emisji fotoelektronów : 10 stopni, 30 stopni i 90 stopni. Stwierdzono wpływ oddziaływania promieniowania rentgenowskiego i ultrawysokiej próżni, powodujących desorpcję tlenu z warstwy wierzchniej. W przypadku folii aktywowanej z dużą jednostkową energią aktywowania (Ej>35 kJ/metr kwadratowy) desorpcja ta powoduje zmniejszenie ilości tlenu w zewnętrznej warstwie folii o grubości około 2 nm do poziomu niższego niż w warstwie leżącej głębiej. Zjawisko to jest jednym ze źródeł błędów pomiarowych spektroskopii fotoelektronowej, stosowanej podczas badań utlenienia warstwy wierzchniej folii polietylenowej.

The results of investigating the oxidation process of surface layers of PE film using XPS method have been presented. The tests have been carried out on different average depths of layers, namely 0.6, 1.9, and 3.7 nm, corresponding with different angles of photoelectron emission, i.e. 10 degrees, 30 degrees and 90 degrees, respectively. The effect of using X-radiation and ultra-high vacuum causing oxygen desorption from the surface layer has been stated. In case of PE film subjected to specific treating energy of high value (Ej>35kJ/square meter) the desorption diminishes the oxygen content in a surface layer of 2 nm in thickness to a lower level than in deeper layers. This phenomenon is one of the measurement errors occuring in photoelectron spectroscopy when testing the oxidation degree of PE film surface layer.
