The study was performed on 40 Black-and-White Lowland Breed calves aged 1-3 months, under the field conditions. The calves were divided into two equal groups: Group I (20 respiratory diseased animals), with typical clinical signs of bronchopneumonia (fever, dyspnea, cough, nasal discharge, inappetence, depression), and Group II (20 healthy animals) - the control group. The following immunological parameters in peripheral blood, based on a routine haematological determination and immunofluorescent flow cytometric analysis, were assayed: the white blood cell count (WBC), total number and percentage of lymphocytes and their subsets WC4+ (B-lympocytes) CD2+ (T-lymphocytes), CD4+ (T-helper lymphocytes), CD8+ (T suppressor/cytotoxic lymphocytes), and also monocyte (CD14+/CD45+), neutrophil and „midsize cell” (MID) number and per cent. The significant increase in WBC count was observed in respiratory diseased calves (Gr. I) as compared with the control group. This increase was directly connected with a rise of total number and per cent of neutrophils, monocytes (CD14+/CD45+) and MID cells. In contrast, significantly lower values of total lymphocyte number were noted in the animal group with bronchopneumonia symptoms because of the decrease of T-cell, mostly CD8+ subset, and B-lymphocyte number and per cent. In conclusion, obtained results point to a distinct activation of macrophage-monocyte line cell system in respiratory diseased calves and lymphopenia concerning T and B-lymphocytes.
