In 1989, the Instruction on the Study of the Fathers of the Church in the Formation ofPriests was published. A document of the Congregation for Catholic Education, it provides a basic reference point for all lecturers on patrology. In its last third part, the Instruction offers a set of specific guidelines relating to the ways patrology ought to be taught. The article aims to examine the impact of the Instruction on the textbooks that have appeared in Poland since it was published. There have been six such textbooks, including one translation, by such authors as H. Pietras (two textbooks), A. Żurek, Sz. Pieszczoch. L. Padovese and F. Drączkowski. Despite the fact that some authors quoted the Instruction in the introduction, none of them pointed towards it as a source of methodological inspiration. As for the actual method applied, the textbooks can be divided into two groups: one of them follows the classical method, represented by, e.g., the textbook by B. Altaner, limiting the presented material for practical reasons. The other group includes textbooks compiled according to entirely different methods, taking account of the guidelines presented in the Instruction. A methodological analysis of the above mentioned textbooks leads to the conclusion that there is no possibility to create a textbook that would play a universal role, similar to the work by B. Altaner and A. Stuiber. In the future, we may expect a continuation of the two trends in the method in which textbooks of patrology are written.

Acquiring virtue, understood as a well-ordered personality, is connected with a considerable toil, as follows from the writings of Clement from Alexandria. Its source is to be ascribed, first of all, to the necessity of being true to God’s commandments, but also to overcoming discouragement caused by: the long-lasting process of its acquiring, the conviction of impossibility to achieve it, undertaking yet again the ceased “moral cultivation” or other appropriate actions not infrequently given up under the influence of the opinion of the environment. Therefore, the one who acquires virtue, is supported by a gnostic, a perfect Christian, filled with concern for others, who, thanks to his acquired and constantly perfected virtue, becomes – both, for those who intend undertaking the toil of its acquiring, and those who walk the road of virtue – first of all a guarantor of its achievement, encouraging thereby to acquiring it. While being somehow a witness of virtue, he uses in relation to those who strive for it, credible verbal instructions, thus mobilizing those who are discouraged by the toil of acquiring it, to walk the chosen road of virtue. Besides, he tries to discern the moral and intellectual condition of those who begin to acquire virtue, which has an essential influence on the character of the proposed actions that introduce to its acquiring. What’s more, an expression of that help is an encouragement to follow him, a command and also prayer. However, the help provided this way should be a contribution not so much of the gnostics himself, as of the whole people of God, obliged to holiness on account of the sacrament of baptism.

This article is an attempt to sketch out the Chrysostom’s ideal of a wife, on the basis of his homilies delivered in Antioch. In brief, this ideal should be understood as a realization of Christ’s commandment to love God and the neighbor. It is a call to the wife to undertake all necessary actions related to the material and spiritual sphere of a person, which serve not only the good of the individual, the family, but also the good of the society. So, according to Chrysostom’s ideal, the wife should, besides a broadly understood evangelization activity, perform also the function of a „guard of the home“, „guard of the state“, and be a teacher and educator. The realization of such outlined model of perfecting, undoubtedly conducive to many virtues that come into being, as well as assuming their development, requires furthermore a presence of the virtue of humility, modesty, fear of God, and faith in God’s Providence, as indispensable to its realizing; the virtues should be preceded by acquirement of a right hierarchy of values. In other words, the ideal of a wife, postulated by Chrysostom is, as it seems, a care about the, initiated in the sacrament of baptism, unity with God through unceasingly realized and deepened fidelity to Christ’s commandment of love god and neighbor.

The proposed topic allows to learn about the scientific activity of the Wielkopolska researchers of the early Christian Church: Jan Sajdak (1882–1967), priest Józef Nowacki (1893–1964), priest Bronisaw Gadysz (1892–1943) and priest Ludwik Gadyszewski (1932–2009). They contributed to the development of patristics not only in Wielkopolska, but also in Poland and in the world. Wielkopolska is also associated with the Scriptures of the Fathers of the Church in which translations of writers of the first centuries of Christianity are published. Patrology textbooks have also been published. The most important of them was written by the priest Szczepan Piestoch and is intended especially for students of theology. Wielkopolska is also a Faculty of Theology which has been operating since 1998 at the University of Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan. It includes the Department of Patristic Theology and currently the Department of Patristic Theology and Church History. Under the supervision of the faculty lecturers doctoral theses, master’s and bachelor’s the- ses, as well as monographs related to the period of Christian antiquity are prepared.
