In this paper, a constructive approach to the fuzzy model selection problem is developed. First, the selection of membership functions is decoupled from parameter calculations using an orthogonalization procedure. Since each membership function depends only on its own parameters, the selection of rules is performed in a sequential manner. At each learning step, a new membership function is created and its parameters are optimized. The resulting parameter calculation boils down to the solution of a triangular system. This approach reduces significantly the computational complexity, and allows for the derivation of a simple optimization algorithm. In addition, optimization of the membership functions is related to the approximation accuracy. Simulation results, when compared with the orthogonal least-squares algorithm, show that this approach is less sensitive to the size of the training data and converges rapidly.
An actual designed structure must response to external actions under conditions, prescribed in codified serviceability (strength versus collapse, including stability loss case, deformation limitations and other) requirements and aimed to satisfy the introduced optimally criteria. An introduction of elastic-plastic structural behaviour ensures certain savings versus clastic structure, however, it causes certain difficulties when modelling and realizing numerical optimization techniques to solve the direct optimization problem of a structure. The possible dangerous states of external actions in respect of the structural response are prescribed by designed codes in terms of certain combinations of loads. The authors propose iterative optimization method of truss-type structure, created to satisfy all serviceability requirements in respect of all the introduced load combinations.

Zaprojektowana konstrukcja powinna spełniać warunki ustalone normą projektowania (kryteria zniszczenia włącznie z utratą stateczności, warunki sztywności i inne), a także kryterium optymalności. Uwzględnienie sprężysto-plastycznego modelu konstrukcji pozwala uzyskać rozwiązania bardziej ekonomiczne niż przy zastosowaniu modelu sprężystego, ale powoduje trudności podczas modelowania konstrukcji i jej analizy statycznej oraz optymalizacji. Możliwe najniekorzystniejsze stany obciążeń konstrukcji wynikają z kombinacji obciążeń podanych w normach projektowania. Autorzy proponują metodę iteracyjncj optymalizacji dźwigarów z uwzględnieniem wszystkich ustalonych norma projektowania warunków i kombinacji obciążeń.
