The paper presents objectives and methods of durability assessment in construction. Principles of service life prediction according to EU standards and recommendations have been described. Currently developing simplified methods of service life prediction (factor method and "insured life" method) have been investigated into and evaluated.

Przeanalizowano wybraną grupę gospodarstw rodzinnych użytkujących ciągniki i inne środki energetyczne w latach 1992-2001. Oceniono przeciętne okresy użytkowania i wykorzystanie oraz ich związek z powierzchnią gospodarstw. Stwierdzono, że wzrasta wykorzystanie roczne i przedłuża się okres użytkowania tych środków.

A selected group of family farms operating tractors and other utilities between 1992 and 2001 was analyzed. Average operation periods, use of utilities and its relation to the farm areas were evaluated. It was confirmed that the annual use is increasing and operations of equipment extended.

The paper summarizes the results of a research project carried out to evaluate the condition of steel and steel-concrete road bridges in different stages of service life. The behaviour and failure mechanisms were observed on different lifetime bridges in order to provide the resume of a condition, frequent failures and rising causes on steel bridges in Czech Republic. The custom in failure detection applies the visual way for the most part. The new bridge inspection guide was developed that will improve the field work in practice.

The features of durability prediction and concepts of time-dependent reliability analysis of deteriorating reinforced concrete structures subjected to extreme gravity and lateral actions as rectangular pulse renewal processes are discussed. New methodological approaches to a time-dependent survival probability analysis and durability prediction of reinforced concrete members are considered. The safety margin of particular members is modeled as a random finite sequence. The effect of coincident recurrent extreme actions on their survival probabilities is analyzed. The instantaneous and long-term survival probabilities of particular and structural members of deteriorating structures are considered. It is recommended to calculate these probabilities by the unsophisticated analytical method of transformed conditional probabilities. The technical service life as a quantitative durability parameter of deteriorating structural members is studied.

Various ways of utilising the standard PN-EN 1504-9 in concrete structure maintenance schedules are discussed.

Przeprowadzono badania skorodowanych słupów stanowiących konstrukcję pięćdziesięcioletniej, niezadaszonej hali do składowania węgla i gipsu. Wytrzymałość pobranych próbek nieuszkodzonego betonu w formie rdzeni mieściła się w przedziale od 28 do 42 MPa. Uszkodzenia słupów na składowisku węgla były stosunkowo nieznaczne, a ich przyczynę stanowiła głównie karbonatyzacja betonu. Natomiast znaczne zniszczenie betonu na składowisku gipsu były spowodowane głównie przez korozją siarczanową, spotęgowaną przez karbonatyzację. Zewnętrzne warstwy betonu zawierały dużo gipsu, a głębsze także ettringit. Proces korozji był ułatwiony w wyniku bezpośredniego stykania się sterty gipsowej ze słupami, w tej części składowiska. Z tego względu nasuwa się wniosek o konieczności ochrony powierzchni betonu przed kontaktem ze składowanym gipsem. Procesy korozji konstrukcji betonowej były równocześnie związane z działaniem mrozu.

The damaged pillars of the construction of fifty years old nonroofed hall, for storage of caol and gypsum were studies. The compressive strength of the samples taken from the relatively uncorroded parts of concrete was in the range 28 to 42 MPa. The corrosion of the concrete pillars in the coal storage was rather limited and principally caused by carbonisation. However, the corrosion of concrete in the part of hall for gypsum storage was highly advanced and linked with sulphate attack and heighten by carbonisation. Rthe external layers of concrete was rich in gypsum, but deeper in ettringite. The corrosion process was running in the direct contact of stored gypsum, surrounding the pillars in this part of hall. The conclusion is that it is necessary to protect the concrete surface in such cases. The corrosion processes were linked directly with freezing thawing of concrete.

W artykule rozpatrywane są zmiany stanu zużycia budynku, jakie powstają w nim od momentu oddania do użycia do czasu tzw. wyjścia z użytkowania. Wyodrębniono dwa niezależne procesy, jakie występują w trakcie eksploatacji budynków: pogarszanie się właściwości użytkowych obiektu oraz wzrost wymagań użytkowników. Poddano szczegółowej analizie te zjawiska. Przedstawiono główne przyczyny ich powstawania oraz podano, jak zmieniają się one w funkcji czasu. W artykule rozpatrywane są także procesy związane z utrzymaniem obiektu: remonty i modernizacje. Artukuł uzupełniono stosownymi przykładami.

In this paper authors investigate changes of building's expenditure state, which emerge from the moment the object has been put into service and last until it is no longer in exploitation. There were two independent processes, which occur during building's exploitation, distinguished: first - deterioration of building's use properties and second - increase of users' requirements. Those two processes are thoroughly analysed: there are main reasons of their occurrence given and how they change in a time function. Also processes connected to building's preservation, such as renovations and refurbishment, are being investigated in this article. The whole work is completed with relevant examples.
