The article highlights the fact that the present system of the standards harmonized with Directive 89/686/EEC provides the prescriptive instruments for the evaluation of sanitary parameters of individual materials used for the manufacture of footwear which make it impossible to synthetically evaluate the microclimate in complete protective footwear. The survey article contains the information about human physiology, the role of protective footwear in creating the microclimate around the foot as well as the current methods of testing footwear, including the evaluation of the microclimate inside it.

Tanned leather can be a source for emission many kind of harmful substances. One of the most dangerous is chromium (VI), sometimes present in the leather. The extractable chromium (VI) should not be present according footwear, personal protective equipment and clothes obligatory standards. The analytical procedure is the same, but there is no limit for chromium (VI) detectable. There are different limits in the standards - from 2 mg/kg to 10 mg/kg. The amount of chromium (VI) in the leathers, specially for shoe production, are tested from many years In the Tannery Laboratory of IPS. The verification of the results obtained during eight years was made. It was found, that only in about 10% of samples the carcinogenic chromium (VI). Or may be not only 10% but as many as 10%? The content of chromium(Vl) amount in the leather has to be continuously investigated.

The study presents the result of examines of dimensions and foot deformities of Politechnika Radomska students in age group 19-26 years. On the basis of the studies found that dimensions of feet, which were taken for collection creation are inadequate to the reality. Moreover foot deformities are no longer phenomenon of older people, but a civilization disease which concerns also younger people.

The protection of footwear against microbial and particularly fungal colonisation plays a crucial role in the foot mycosis prophylaxis and prevents from biodeterioration of shoes. Cotton textile fabrics used in production of footwear require preservation for increase resistance to microorganism performance. Studies showed suitability of biocide preparation to sanitization of cotton textile fabrics to footwear.
