The anlage of the subarachnoid space is seen in embryos at stage 14 (33 days) in the innermost zone of the primary meninx as irregular spaces on the ventral surface of the spinal cord. At first this space is only on the ventral surface of the spinal cord. From stage 18 (44 days) on, when the dura mater proper is formed, the reticular tissue of the primary meninx and spaces are around the circumference of the spinal cord. These spaces gradually coalesce and contain many blood vessels.

An ultrastructural study was performed on trigeminal ganglia removed from foetuses aged 10 to 23 weeks. The first turns of lemmocyte processes around the axons were observed in the trigeminal ganglion in the 12th week of development. During the period between the 15th and the 18th weeks the myelin sheath increases in thickness and becomes a compact, laminated structure. In foetuses of 23 weeks the compact myelin sheath has up to 24 myelin lamellae.

The hypogastric nerves of a human foetus of 220 mm C-R length (23rd week) were investigated with an electron microscope. These nerves were composed mainly of bundles of unmyelinated fibres and single myelinated fibres. Small ganglia and single ganglion cells were observed in the hypogastric nerves. Light and dark cells were found among the nerve cells. The two types of cell differed in the number of ribosomes and the amount rough endoplasmic reticulum. In the period of development investigated protosynapses and mature synapses were observed in the hypogastric nerves.

White communicating rami were traced in 8 human embryos of developmental stages 14 and 15 (aged 33 and 36 postovulatory days, respectively). In embryos at stage 14 the white communicating rami were found in the spinal nerves T1 to T9. In embryos at stage 15 the white communicating rami were present at the spinal cord levels T1 to L3. Investigations were made on serial sections of human embryos at developmental stages from 13 to 23 (32-56 postovulatory days). The trochlear nucleus appears in the posterior region of the basal plate of the midbrain at stage l3. It is composed of large neurons, the processes of which are sharply defined. Since stage l5 the trochlear fibers can be followed through the alar region to their decussation in the mid-dorsal part of the midbrain. The trochlear nerve emerges from the dorsal surface of the lowest part of the midbrain.

The epidural space is seen in embryos at stage 17 (41 days) on the periphery of the primary meninx. During stage 18 (44 days) the dura mater proper appears and the epidural space is located between this meninx and the perichondrium and contains blood vessels. During the last week of the embryonic period (stages 20–23) the epidural space is evident around the circumference of the spinal cord. On the posterior surface it is found between the dura mater and the mesoderm of the dorsal body wall.

Investigations were made on .serial sections of human embryos at developmental stage 23 (56 days). The oculomotor complex in embryos at this stage consists of lateral, median, and accessory nuclei. The lateral (chief) nucleus forms the greatest part of the oculomotor complex and it is subdivided into ventromedial and dorsolateral groups. Between the posterior portions of lateral nuclear groups is the median nucleus. Dorsally and medially to the lateral nucleus is the accessory (parasympathetic) nucleus.

A study was made of human embryos at the end of 8 weeks and foetuses aged 9 weeks. It was shown that at the beginning of the foetal period the cortical plate, which is the primordium of the neocortex, covers the whole surface of the cerebral hemisphere. The plate consists of 8–12 rows of densely packed cells. Below the cortical plate is the subplate.
