The article analyzes spatial represenatation of New York as presented in Janusz Głowacki’s works after his decision to emigrate in 1981. The literary assimilation of space is realized through three narrative strategies, i.e. stereotyping, walking, and naming/writing mode. The author of the article proposes geopoetic, anthropological, and sociological reading of his various texts (autobiography, essays, short stories, and dramas).

In the following article, several texts of Polish (e)migration literature in Germany are analysed in relation to the narrative strategies used by the authors and the patterns of identity presented in them. Narration is not perceived only as a lin- guistically-limited genre, but as a mode of organising individual and collective memory and determining one’s own identity. With the help of selected catego- ries (exoticisation, intercultural (double) mediation, alterisation, transcultural universalisation, transculturalisation), a wide range (of which particularism and universalism mark two ends) of possible ways of dealing with one’s own migrant status is presented. It is their autobiographical narration of identity that all the texts selected for the analysis have in common. The aim of this article is to show the different forms it can take.

The article attempts to recognize the most distinctive aspects of spatial representations in literary works from the 20th and 21st centuries. It analyzes the narrative strategies employed in the following novels Terminal by Marek Bieńczyk, Sońka by Ignacy Karpowicz and Ludzka rzecz by Paweł Potoroczyn. Consequently, it shows that textual exploration of space which is foreign, other, untameable may be instrumental in authorial self-representation and that it may additionally reveal the writing process with its innate limitations.

The focus of this paper is the mutual representation of the process of artistic writing in the memoirs of Bohumila Grögerová Můj labyrint [My Labyrinth] and in the novel Točité věty [Winding Sentences] by Daniela Hodrová, which came into existence concurrently with the two authors in close contact. Other pieces by these authors, though of different genres, may be read as an artistic dialogue as well: a dialogue with mythologies, historical figures and cultural traditions, the values and knowledge that these authors share and represent, sometimes in a similar way and sometimes in a different one, while employing narrative strategies typical both of modernist and postmodernist poetics, balancing between dream and reality, fictionality, fictionalization and authenticity. A selection of topics (language, speech, writing; individual and collective; textual subjects; myth and novel; memory and oblivion) are analyzed, and a comparison of modes of representation and their functions in the texts as related to the world of ideas of both authors is undertaken.

Uta von Naumburg, wife of margrave Ekkehard II from Meissen, probably lived from 1000 to 1043 AD. In the German cultural tradition she is not known as a historical figure, but as a stone statue from the Naumburg Cathedral. In the 1930s she became a symbol of German femininity and was made a heroine of the National Socialist myth. Beginning with the historical figure of Uta, this article will show the strategies used to demythologize the founder of the cathedral, based on the postmodern novel Die Herrin der Kathedrale (2013), written by Claudia and Nadja Beinert. The authors present the ways of the deconstruction of the medieval paradigm of femininity with the help of narrative strategies.

The X-Files should be considered a breakthrough television series, based on its approach to genre hybridity and narrative structure. The series defies traditional genre classifications, combining elements usually attributed to police procedurals, science fiction, and including elements that can be found in horror and sitcom, as well. The article examines how the series mixes these mainstream and cult genres to create a unique genre hybrid attractive to various types of audience. Furthermore, the article analyzes the narrative strategies employed in The X-Files, such as narrative special effects (e.g. voice-over narration) and multi-episode story arcs that engage viewers and bridge seasons. Finally, the balance between two distinctive episode categories (mytharc and standalone/monster-of-the-week) will be discussed to understand the series’ innovative character.
