One way to ensure a high quality, personalized literacy program for English language learners is to use the learners’ own lives and experiences as curriculum. Creating spaces for students to compose and share stories results in a strong sense of community facilitates the development of authentic literacy skills and increases student motivation and achievement. Present day, multimedia, networked computers provide a range of informational communicative and publishing tools that can be used to dissolve classroom walls, bringing the students out and the world inside. Moreover, students who work on projects using computers demonstrate increased cooperation and collaboration. For this project, young adult learners from diverse cultures, studying English as a second or other language at a community college made use of computer technology to compose personal narratives and share them with others. Results indicate that using student stories as texts and sharing those texts via podcasting enhances literacy skills, increases student confidence and selfefficacy, and inspires them to work for the common good. The study involved only two small classes of multicultural students, but the strong success of the project suggests using students’ life stories as curriculum and computer technology as a means of sharing is a powerful model of instruction.

The purpose of this article is to demonstrate that the experience of a literary narrative qua literary narrative is an experience of narrative thickness, that is, an experience in which narrative form and narrative content are inseparable. I explain my thesis of poetic thickness in § 1, showing why it does not admit of extension from poetry to literary narratives. §§ 2–3 synthesize the work of Derek Attridge and Peter Lamarque, advancing narrative thickness as a necessary condition of literary narratives. I propose a work of didactic literature – J. M. Coetzee’s ‘The Lives of Animals’ – as a paradigmatic counterexample to narrative thickness in § 4. I show, in § 5, that narrative thickness holds for this work in particular and didactic works which are literary in general, concluding that narrative thickness is indeed a necessary condition of literary narratives.

Relational sociology rejects substantialism and focuses its attention on the complexity and dynamics of all forms of social life and the subjective nature of action. Relational thinking is an alternative attitude to both functional structuralism and strongly individualistic-oriented theories. Relationality emphasizes the processual and emergent nature of reality. Actions— individual and collective—appear as successive stages of a specific process of events, and result from the configuration of relations and social interactions constituting a particular situation. Different conceptions of identity have been developed within relationally oriented sociology. The aim of the article is to summarize the narrative and realistic approaches, and to present how much they differ in their ontological assumptions. The constructionist concept of narrative identity presented by Margaret R. Somers, and Kenneth J. Gergen’s project of a “relational self,” illustrate the narrative approach. Pierpaolo Donati’s concept of the relational subject and the theory of agency developed by Margaret S. Archer exemplify the position of critical realism.

The ethos of the lawyer in western societies is mainly founded on a culture of the Enlightenment. In effect, it tends to treat law in a purely rational and instrumental manner. The Law and Literature movement, as opposed to this traditional approach, searches for lost dimensions of the lawyer’s ethos, trying to discover interpretative, rhetoric and narrative aspects in the practice of law.

The aim of this paper is to use cognitive approach in order to discuss the topic of memory in Iain Banks’s “Use of weapons.” I argue that Banks presents memory as a creative faculty of the human brain which is inherently connected with imagination, identity-shaping processes and narrative construction. In this essay, I analyse the workings of memory, as well as its social and cultural functions, as presented in “Use of weapons.”

The writings of the emperor Julian (331–363) reveal an author who was familiar with Greek literature in all its forms, including fictional narratives. He defended Greek myths, such as the story of Attis and Cybele, from the attacks of Christian authors in his Hymn to the Mother of the Gods. He also composed a fictional narrative featuring his imperial predecessors in the satirical spirit of Lucian (Caesars), an allegorical autobiography (Against the Cynic Heraclius), and a sanitised version of the love of Antiochus for his mother-in-law Stratonice (Misopogon, 347A to 348A). This article discusses these short fictional narratives in the context of the polemical use of fiction in the ideological struggle between Julian and Christian writers in the fourth to sixth centuries of our era.

This article explores selected aspects of narrative expression of identification with social entities in Holocaust survivors’ oral history testimonies, including the related conflicts of identities. In its empirical dimension, the study is based on secondary analysis of archived interviews with people born in Czechoslovakia and labelled as Jews by the Nürnberg laws, who had left Czechoslovakia and remained abroad. Oral history interview is conceived as a social and linguistic interaction of interviewer and interviewee, aiming towards collaborative production of a comprehensible account of the past. The results show how the religious, ethnical, political and national identity of narrators is expressed in the interview as a part of the life-story plot. Second explored topic is the spoken tongue as an attribute of national identity during the pre-war, war and postwar period. Considering the characteristics of the analysed interview-sample it is precisely the (absence of) language knowledge, which is reflected in the interviews as an obstacle that had to be overcome by the narrators, often quite soon after the traumatic events of the wartime.

The thematically oriented biographical interview (TOBI) is a research tool used frequently in contemporary qualitative research. Compared to other interviewing techniques, its main advantage is its combination of a thematic focus and sensitivity to the perspective of the interviewee. The authors demonstrate that TOBI is made up of several constituents: first, it is a speech infrastructure (comprising a conversational and a narrative component), and second, it encompasses three kinds of relevance (biographical relevance, identity relevance and specific thematic relevance). The main part of the article is devoted to an analysis of the types and forms of relevance that occur in the corpus of oral history biographical interviews. The analysis shows that, contrary to the common effort of researchers to increase the significance of a respondent’s testimony by emphasising the specific thematic relevance, the biographical and identity relevances are equally important for successfully capturing the actor’s perspective and smoothly conducting a TOBI. In their explication of relevance and its forms the authors draw on the theory of relevance developed by Alfred Schütz.

Tacitus’ description of Nero’s punishment of Christians for the Great Fire of Rome in AD 64 has made a great impact on later understandings of Christian history. However, several questions have been raised concerning the accuracy of this account, and recently the historicity of a persecution of Christians under Nero has been denied altogether by Brent Shaw. This article discusses the most important objections and tries to achieve a better understanding of the events by combining an analysis of the narrative functions of this persecution in Tacitus with a new consideration of the earliest Christian reports. The article ends with an Appendix containing an updated analysis of the emergence of the name “Christian”.

The relationship between memory and literature is a complex and curious one. While memory implies a relation with the past, with the factual, literature’s realm is the fictional. They, nevertheless, implicate each other: while re-membering the past which is what is gone and not there anymore always entails mediation and a degree of fictionality, we can consider literary language as acting out psychic processes through metaphor, concealment and temporal dislocation. The novel that I deal with in this paper is Austerlitz by W.G. Sebald which recounts the story of a series of chance encounters between two travelers – the narrator and Austerlitz – in a time span of thirty years. As they traverse Europe, conceived in the text as a landscape in which cultural, natural and personal history intermingle, their paths converge several times and it is in their lengthy talks that Austerlitz’s traumatic past gradually emerges. Sent to England by his parents on a kindertransport just before the beginning of the Second World War and raised in Wales by foster parents, Austerlitz pursues a life unaware of his real identity. In this paper, focusing on the relationship of forgetting and remembering with storytelling, I explore how the mnemonic processes are represented in the text with an emphasis on the effect of the mechanisms of repression on the way the narrative is told.

Introduction. Nowadays, the importance of nursing science is increasing in the organization, execution, and development of health services. Nurses working in the health institutions encounter countless tragedies while performing healthcare services to patients and families where uninterrupted service is provided 7 days 24 hours. Biopsychosocial changes seen in individuals because of violence in the working environment are silent screams. It is necessary to share feelings and experiences to make the silent scream audible. Aim. In this article, it is aimed to contribute to narrative studies, to draw attention to the violence experienced by nurses in the working environment and the insufficiency of the measures taken by examining the patient stories of two nurses with clinical experience. Method. In the study, two nurses with a professional experience of five years or more were asked to write one of the most memorable anecdotes they have experienced in their professional life. The anecdotes were analyzed through the "Novel, Story, Epic, Tale, Diary, Memory, Mythology and Analogous Rating Scale". Results. Three sub-problems are discussed in this research. Data related to each sub-problem were collected and analyzed. In these two narratives, it was determined that the patients behaved implausible in some situations and their problematic behavior was the dominant common feature. In the first narrative, the categories can be classified under "Behavior of the patients - solutions of the nurses" and in the second narrative under "Emotions of the patient - Emotions of the nurses". The primary point to be reached in both stories can be considered as follows: "The professional approach of healthcare professionals towards challenging patient behaviors they confront." The incidence of violence could be reduced if the nurses have adequate professional knowledge, experience, and skills and inform patients about the procedures. Conclusion. In this study, it is emphasized that sufficient measures are not taken in violence against healthcare professionals in Turkey, that seriously affects employee health and negatively affects the functionality of health services in terms of quality.

Wstęp. Współcześnie wzrasta znaczenie nauk pielęgniarskich w organizacji, realizacji i rozwoju ochrony zdrowia. Metody. W badaniu poproszono dwie pielęgniarki z co najmniej pięcioletnim doświadczeniem zawodowym o napisanie jednej z najbardziej pamiętnych historii, jakie przeżyły w swoim życiu zawodowym. Historie zostały przeanalizowane za pomocą „powieści, opowieści, eposu, opowieści, pamiętnika, pamięci, mitologii i analogicznej skali ocen”. Wyniki. W niniejszym badaniu omówiono trzy podproblemy. Dane dotyczące każdego podproblemu zostały zebrane i przeanalizowane.

Pamiętna fikcja. Wzbudanie emocji i sentymentów rodzinnych w postkomunistycznym pisarstwie Rosjanek. This article deals with women-centred prose texts of the 1990s and 2000s in Russia written by women, and focuses especially on generation narratives. By this term the author means fictional texts that explore generational relations within families, from the perspective of repressed experiences, feelings and attitudes in the Soviet period. The selected texts are interpreted as narrating and conceptualizing the consequences of patriarchal ideology for relations between mothers and daughters and for reconstructing connections between Soviet and post-Soviet by revisiting and remembering especially the gaps and discontinuities between (female) generations. The cases discussed are Liudmila Petrushevskaia’s ‘povest’ Vremia noch [The Time: Night] (1991), Liudmila Ulitskaia’s novel Medeia i ee deti [Medea and her Children] (1996) and Elena Chizhova’s novel Vremia zhenshchin [The Time of Women] (2009). These novels reflect on the one hand the woman-centredness and novelty of representation in women’s prose writing in the post-Soviet period. On the other hand, the author suggests that they reflect the diverse methods of representing the Soviet era and experience through generation narratives. The texts reassess the past through intimate, tactile memories and perceptions, and their narration through generational plots draws attention to the process of working through, which needs to be done in contemporary Russia. The narratives touch upon the untold stories of those who suffered in silence or hid the family secrets from the officials, in order to save the family. The narration delves into the different layers of experience and memory, conceptualizing them in the form of multiple narrative perspectives constructing different generations and traditions. In this way they convey the ‘secrets’ hidden in the midst of everyday life routines and give voice to the often silent resistance of women towards patriarchal and repressive ideology. The new women’s prose of the 1980s–90s and the subsequent trend of women-centred narratives and generation narratives employ conceptual metaphors of reassessing, revisiting and remembering the cultural, experiential, and emotional aspects of the past, Soviet lives.

It is a deep-seated belief that marriage plays an important role in contributing to happiness or success in life which is in this essay understood as the coexistence within the institutions of marriage and family. In an attempt to find a “recipe for marital happiness,” there have been expressed popular views that a successful life, a good husband or wife, just like in the lottery, depend on good luck and happy coincidence, and are independent of the knowledge and the will of the persons concerned. The concept of happiness encompasses subjective feelings, aspirations, expectations and experiences of an individual. To develop one’s own definition of happiness, one has to look more deeply into oneself. This idea became my main motivation to conduct research using biographical methods. This paper presents an analysis of the collected research material.

The text discusses the first volume Na wysokiej połoninie of Stanislaw Vincenz – Prawda starowieku. I focus on the issue of time in the novel Vincenz. I point to the phenomenon of mythologizing the world of Hucul. That mythologizing is because several important reasons. Firstly, the real reality, which does not have a meaning and coherence, through the stories of mythical narrative acquires the character of rationality and integrity. Second, the myth allows you to recover critically interpret the way what directly is no longer given. In the story of the mythical function is included fiction and symbolic function, which bring to the surface the hidden meaning. Time in Prawda starowieku shows the opposition between the time of the mountains and civilization. Both times integrates narrative story.

This paper concerns the theory of triple mimesis formulated by the contemporary French philosopher, Paul Ricoeur, in his three-volume book Time and Narrative. It is a hermeneutical interpretation of Aristotle’s classic definition of mimesis from his Poetics. Ricoeur’s argument is aimed at proving that the way an imitative transformation of the reality in a narrative operates actually presupposes a circular relation between the living experience and the narrative, which mutually determine each other. The main aim of this paper is to answer the question of how the communication between the author, the work, and the reader should be viewed in the context of triple mimesisand what factors determine our understanding of a mimetic work of art
