This paper is a review of recent publications dealing with the consequences of the release of genetically modified (GM) crops into the environment. The summary of arguments and for and against is an attempt to summarize the debate in the media. This highly publicized issue, although only one aspect of the conflict between the biotech lobby, environmentalists and consumers. The controversy arises from the fact that neither the benefits nor the risks of GM crops are clearly defined. The study contains a summary of claims that there is a serious potential risk to the environment of positive cultivation of GM crops, with uncertain effects, and that basic manipulation of heredity could have tragic consequences. European scepticism about GM crops increases from year to year. This paper coincides with the Polish government’s introduction of a ban on the cultivation of genetically modified maize and potatoes on Polish territory. In conclusion, while a move away from GM crops is likely, the author argues that ultimately there is no turning back.

Przeprowadzono modyfikację żywic fenolowo-formaldehydowych w celu uzyskania rozpuszczalnych w wodzie pochodnych sulfonowych i aminowych. Otrzymane rozpuszczalne w wodzie sole sodowe pochodnych sulfonowych nowolaku SE oraz częściowo rozpuszczalne w wodzie pochodne aminowe nowolaków NS i SE o różnej zawartości grup funkcyjnych w łańcuchach polimerowych wykazały właściwości flokulujące.

Modifications of phenol-formaldehyde resins had been done in order to obtain water-soluble sulfonic and amine derivatives. Some water soluble sodium salts of sulfonic novolak SE and partially water - soluble amine derivatives of novolak SE and NS with different number of functional groups in polymeric chains were made. The modified resins revealed flocculating properties.

Adsorption on laboratory prepared chitosan beads modified with polyvinyl alcohol (PV A) was determined. To increase resistance of the beads to chemical and physical agents, they were cross-linked with glutaraldehyde (OLA) in the hulk. The main goal of this study was to develop a method for formation of chitosan beads and to determine their sorption efficiency of heavy metal ions. Experiments were carried out in water solutions of copper(II) (CuSO4 . 5H2O), nickel(II) (NiSO4 . 6H2O) and zinc(II) (ZnSO4 . 7H2O) at concentrations ranging from 0.5 to 0.001 mol/dm3 in static conditions. Preliminary experiments with freeze-dried beads were carried out.

Rozpatrywano proces adsorpcji prowadzony na złożu z wytworzonych laboratoryjnie kulek chitozanowych modyfikowanych alkoholem poliwinylowym (PVA). W celu poprawienia odporności na czynniki chemiczne i fizyczne kulki były poddawane powierzchniowo sieciowaniu aldehydem glutarowym (OLA).. Celem badań było określenie ich zdolności sorpcyjnych w stosunku do jonów metali ciężkich. Badania prowadzono dla jonów w roztworach wodnych: miedzi(II) (CuSO4 . 5H2O), niklu(II) (NiSO4 . 6H2O) oraz cynku(II) (ZnSO4 . 7H2O) w zakresie stężeń 0,5-0,001 mol/dm3. Określano równowagę sorpcyjną w warunkach statycznych. Przeprowadzono wstępne badania dla kulek suszonych liofilizacyjnie.
