Sporulation of the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae - equivalent to gametogenesis in higher organisms, is a complex differentiation program induced by starvation of cells for nitrogen and carbon. Such environmental conditions activate coordinated, sequential changes in gene expression leading to production of haploid, stress-resistant spores. Sporulation comprises two rounds of meiosis coupled with spore morphogenesis and is tightly controlled to ensure viable progeny. This review concerns the regulation of differentiation process by nutritional and transcriptional signals.

Chromosome segregation during meiosis is a complex process, which leads to production of four haploid gametes from two precursor cells. Reversible phosphorylation of proteins plays a crucial role in this process. The Schizosaccharomyces pombe Prp4 is an essential serine/threonine protein kinase, which belongs to the Clk/Sty family. To study the role of Prp4 in meiosis, we analysed chromosome segregation in a strain carrying conditional analog-sensitive allele of Prp4 protein kinase (prp4-as2). Our data show, that Prp4 protein kinase plays important role in chromosome segregation during meiosis, as revealed by enhanced missegregation of chromosomes in prp4-as2 mutant cells.

The subject of the translated article is irony understood as one of the formativeelements of human speech. The author discusses the etymology of this idea, referring primarily to its definition formulated by Socrates, showingits relations with sarcasm, cynicism, meiosis and hyperbole. In terms of content, irony also has a moral element, since it is a challenge to traditional ideas, beliefs or shared cultural references. Irony is also a stylistic convention of poetics, helping to portray in literature what is paradoxical and ambiguous.

16-chromosome forms of red clover (2n=14+2) were crossed to six Trifolium species with the chromosome number 2n=16. Hybrid plants were derived from the cross of a stable 16-chromosome red clover T. pratense with T. diffusum (2n=16). No seeds were obtained from reciprocal crosses. F₁ hybrid plants were morphologically more similar to T. diffusum, whereas their other characters, e.g. flower number per head, were intermediate between the species crossed. All F₁ hybrids had the chromosome number 2n=16. Meiosis proceeded with large irregularities. The average number of bivalents per cell was 3.32, and that of univalents - 9.98. Univalents exhibited a high stickiness and frequently formed "end-to-end" configurations and chains consisting of about a dozen of so chromosomes. Bivalents were straight. Lagging chromosomes and chromosome bridges were observed during AI; lagging chromosomes were also found during AII. After an equalizing division, tetrads and different from them microspore polyads were formed. 16-chromosome hybrids were male- and female-sterile. No hybrids were obtained from the stable 16-chromosome red clover T. pratense (n=7 chromosomes) crossed to the selected clover species (T. apertum Bobr., T. alexandrinum L. and others) with n=8 chromosomes.

Here we report the consequences of telomere erosion in Arabidopsis thaliana, studied by examining seed and pollen production and the course of male meiosis through the last five generations (G5–G9) of telomerase-deficient Arabidopsis mutants. We used a previously described mutant line in which telomerase activity was abolished by T-DNA insertion into the TERT gene encoding telomerase reverse transcriptase. Reduced fertility accompanied by morphological abnormalities occurred in G6, which produced on average 35 seeds per silique (vs. 43 in wild type) and worsened in G7 (30 seeds) and G8 (14 seeds), as did the morphological abnormalities. The last generation of tert mutants (G9) did not form reproductive organs. Analysis of meiosis indicated that the main cause of reduced fertility in the late generation tert mutants of Arabidopsis was the numerous chromosomal end-to-end fusions which led to massive genome rearrangements in meiocytes. Fusion of meiotic chromosomes began in G5 and increased in each of the next generations. Unpaired chromosomes (univalents) were observed in G7 and G8. The study highlights some differences in the meiotic consequences of telomere shortening between plant and animal systems.
