Stevens’s poems grant a curious status to material reality. Famously abstract, they refuse to abandon the realm of the material. Rather, “material reality” is inseparable from “abstract” concepts. Stevens’s position is pragmatist: the status and significance of material objects is founded by the entirely human linguistic/mental activity, which is also an interpretive activity. The poem is a site of initiating this activity. As such, Stevens’s poetics remains in opposition to other aesthetic positions: the linguistic idealism of Mallarmé, the metaphysical realism of Miłosz and Herbert, and the material realism of Ponge and American “objectivists”. While the metaphysical positions tend to overcome the material, the realistic poets will reify it by “taking the side of things”. Stevens’s poetic pragmatism sees no lure in the extra-material, while also refusing to see matter as meaningful in itself, beyond the human interpretive activity.

Głównym celem tego artykułu jest analiza różnorodnych form wytwarzania oporu mających miejsce podczas Protestów Kobiet (2020–2023). Swoją refleksję osadzam w kontekście teorii oporu, materialności i wizualności. Przeanalizowałam 19 epizodyczno-narracyjnych wywiadów, które są częścią moich badań magisterskich. Korzystając z różnorodnych narzędzi teoretycznych i metodologicznych, poddaję wspomniane narracje ustrukturyzowanej analizie, a następnie opisowi. Uwagę koncentruję na eksplorowaniu różnorodnych sposobów podejmowanego zaangażowania przybierających różne od siebie kierunki (np. negacyjny, emancypacyjny). Zwracam również uwagę na rodzaje aktorów biorących udział w oporze – zarówno tych materialnych, jak i niematerialnych – oraz formujące się pomiędzy nimi relacje. Dzięki temu włączam w badanie oporu nie tylko perspektywę ludzi, ale również materialną soczewkę umożliwiającą rozszerzenie i ponowne podjęcie istniejących w literaturze antropocentrycznych analiz.

The main aim of this article is to analyze the diverse forms whereby resistance has been produced during the women’s mobilizations (2020 to 2023). I focus on the forms and directions of resistance (emancipation, challenging discourses) as well as on how the material objects were involved in it. The theories of resistance, materiality and visuality provide a theoretical framing for the study. The article draws on 19 episodic- narrative interviews that were conducted as a part of my MA research. With the help of the theoretical and methodological tools, I analize these narratives seeking to explore which actors create the resistance, which actors are created during the resistance and what relationships between them are produced. In this way, I map the protests not only from the perspective of people but also the material objects that co-create them. The material lens used in the analysis allows to challenge the anthropocentric interpretations of resistance.
