Banks have undergone an extensive expansion process in their distribution network. Today, Italy is considered an over-branched country. In Poland on the other hand, we have seen the development of a banking network in a period of economic transformation. All operators have been forced to begin a process of rationalization in their distribution networks. Poland vs. Italy may be a good example of a comparison of the changes taking place in the area of the optimization of the distribution networks of the mature banking market in Italy with the constantly growing banking market in Poland. The aim of this work was to observe on-going processes and to analyse it. On the one hand, there was a focus on the evolutionary point of view causing changes in the optimization network. On the other hand, attention was paid to the identification of the determinants affecting the percentage of persons holding a bank account in Poland, Italy, and in 27 countries of the European Union.

The aim of this paper is to investigate the level of competition in the Polish banking sector. The analysis of concentration ratios and competition measures showed that as a result of the consolidation process, the level of competition in the Polish banking sector decreased. Moreover, it was pointed out that despite the generally favorable situation, the regulatory requirements observed in recent years are a significant challenge for banks in order to maintain their competitive position on the market. In addition, it seems that the greatest challenge now is the inability to reconcile pressure on short-term profits along with long-term development strategies.

The paper aims to assess changes in the level of competition in Poland’s banking sector in 1997-2007. Competition between banks is one of the most important factors behind the stability of the financial sector through its influence on the profitability of banks, access to external funding, and the country’s economic development as a whole. In this paper, the Panzar and Rosse model was applied to assess the level of competition in the banking sector. The results of the analysis of the Polish banking sector show that between 1997 and 2007 commercial banks operated under monopolistic competition. The degree of competition in the Polish banking sector is close to that in euro-area banking sectors (which is reflected by the values of the Panzar and Rosse measures). This applies to both corporate and retail banking. The main driving factor behind competition in the Polish banking sector was the country’s entry into the European Union. The same channels, i.e. consolidation and financial deregulation, that were observed in the EU at the time of adopting the euro influenced competition between banks in the Polish banking sector at the time of EU entry. This was mainly due to foreign capital from the euro area.

Today, the scope of energy services markets (ESMs) has expanded worldwide and covered almost all areas of production and consumption of goods and services for both industrial and public appointments, as well as households, mainly due to energy efficiency and renewable energy sources. At the same time, the incompleteness of theoretically grounded bases significantly reduces the pace of these markets development. The purpose of this study is to present the framework for the determination of directions and construct a model of structural organization and functional interaction of the ESMs participants. Such approach allows, by combining resources, capabilities and information, to expand the scope and improve the efficiency and productivity of energy services. A new structure-function model of ESMs participants’ interaction has been developed. In addition, a new organizational mechanism is proposed to support the efficient functioning of the ESMs in the form of a cycle of continuous improvement of the energy services results. The practical significance of the study is to create a conceptual framework for the organization and functioning of ESMs, which allows to systemically assess the new opportunities for such markets in both developed and developing countries.

The author probes the factors that influence the structure of service markets and describes the way in which they influence the operations of these markets. The paper presents selected factors of key importance to the structure of service markets. These include the nonmaterial nature and diversification of services, information asymmetry, natural and regulatory barriers to entry and the level of concentration. The last part of the article shows the influence of all these factors on the structure of selected service markets. The author argues that service markets have certain specific features that account for the existence of individual market models. Whether a specific segment of the service sector takes the form of an oligopoly, monopoly or perfect competition is determined by its specific features, including the differentiation of services, the nature of entry barriers, the existence of scale benefits and the level of concentration.

The main goal of this article is to contribute to the theoretical analysis of international trade under imperfect competition using the Cournot oligopoly model with heterogeneous firms. In particular, our objective is to provide some insights into the role of cost asymmetry in studying the effects of trade liberalisation in the Cournot oligopoly framework. In order to introduce firm heterogeneity into the oligopoly model we use the generalised Cournot framework with asymmetric firms that differ in terms of their productivity, levels of output and market shares. We show that trade liberalisation leads to the elimination of less productive firms and results in lower equilibrium prices, higher sales per firm and lower markups in the industry.

In the next ten years, it is likely that Eastern Europe will move from being an “emerging destination” to a key destination for outsourced activity. Outsourcing in Eastern Europe is facing many difficulties and challenges. But still during the last 10 years it has been growing rapidly. Romania and Ukraine recorded the largest growth in 2009 (in the post-global financial recession period). Hungary, Poland, Belarus, Czech Republic and Bulgaria followed closely. Upcoming trends in the Eastern European outsourcing sphere are likely to be consolidation and an increase in specialized services.

In the context of initiation of economic reforms in general and changes in policies and regulations of the banking sector in particular, the present paper attempts to examine the structure-conduct-performance relationships in Indian banking sector. It is observed that there have been changes in the market structure of Indian banking sector, conducts of the banks and their performance in the post-reform era, especially during the last decade, though the changes have not been significant in every aspect. Using a panel dataset of 59 banks operating in India during 1999-2000 to 2008-2009 and applying the two-stage least squares (2SLS) method of estimation, the paper finds that there exist strong inter-linkages amongst structure of the market, banks’ conduct and their financial performance. While market share of a bank depends directly on its market size, asset base, selling efforts, and past financial performance, its selling efforts vary directly with market share, asset base, and past financial performance. On the other hand, returns on assets of a bank vary directly with its market share, but inversely with its asset base and selling efforts. The regression results essentially suggest for multidirectional and dynamic SCP relationships in Indian banking sector. It is also found that the nature of ownership has significant influence on market share, selling efforts and financial performance of the banks. As compared to the nationalised banks, market share of the private banks (both domestic and foreign) is found to be lower. But private banks make greater selling efforts and have better financial performance vis-à-vis their public sector counterparts

W Rosji istnieje prawie pół tysiąca banków, ale czy oznacza to, że sektor bankowy jest w tym kraju konkurencyjny? Celem badania jest ustalenie stopnia konkurencji w sektorze bankowym w Rosji w kontekście podjętych reform zmierzających do wzmocnienia kapitałowego i ograniczenia liczebności banków.

Purpose: This paper concerns the phenomenon of two-way causality effect between market structures and coopetition occurrence. It is assumed that certain characteristics of an existing market structure implicate the decision to deploy the strategy of coopetition by companies. Moreover, the opposite effect might be expected, that is coopetition between market rivals changes the market structure on which it was implemented in the first place. In the paper various aspects and approaches of the abovementioned phenomena have been considered. Design/methodology/approach: The author investigates the events, motives and values that lead companies to deploy the coopetition strategy. Furthermore, the theoretical and conceptual bases for the effect of the coopetition impacting the change of market structures have been provided. A wide analysis of managers’ decision resulting from the occurrence of certain strategic events has been conducted with the use of comparison matrixes. Finally, in the last part of the study the author’s empirical research on two passenger transport relevant markets has been presented. Findings: Certain market strategies characteristics affected companies to deploy the coopetition strategy and the other way round, the strategy changed the market structure in the result of competitors’ decision. Taking into consideration all of the theoretical, conceptual and empirical aspects raised throughout the course of the research, both hypotheses have been confirmed. Research limitations/implications: The author has used mostly qualitative methods such as observation, conceptualization or cause and effect analysis in which the natural existence of errors might occur. To test the hypotheses the researcher had to create assumptions and models that represent what should happen if every aspects successfully appear. It might be expected that some other variables affected the market structures during the research that the author was not aware of. Thus, one should interpret the results with the inclusion of the ceteris paribus. Practical implications: Instead of applying the high cost strategies such as price wars or demand seeking, one might use the coopetition to create added values with little or even zero cost. What is more, this strategy may result in higher pricing power, higher market size or better level of innovation. Originality/value: The publication discusses the coopetition phenomenon from the innovative perspective of two-way causality (influence) between market structures and coopetition itself while most of the studies concern only one-way cause and effect between those variables. Conclusions drawn from this paper can be useful for entrepreneurs and their decision making process.

Subsequent national censuses indicated that the rate of increase in the number of households in the periods between the censuses conducted in 1978/1988 and 1988/2002 was similar and amounted to ca. 2%. The statistical housing deficit was estimated in 1988 at nearly 12% of the existing stock, with similar proportion in towns and villages. According to the Census 2002 results, the statistical housing deficit in 2002 was estimated at 1,704,000 flats nationwide, including 1,089,000 flats in towns and 615,000 in rural areas. Between the last two censuses, the deficit increased to nearly 15% of the existing stock, including less than 14% in tows and more than 15% in rural areas. In 2002, self-contained flats (occupied by single households) were estimated at 10.1 million among the total number of 13.3 million. That proportion was 76.1% of the total number of households, while the same proportion was 80.3% in 1988. Therefore, the number 137 of shared flats increased from 2.4 million in 1988 (19.6% of the total number of households) to 3.2 million in 2002, or 23.9% of the total number of households. What is characteristic is the increase of single-person households from 17.4% in 1978 to nearly 25% in 2002, and in the towns: from less than 21% in 1978 to nearly 28% in 2002. The description of Polish regional housing markets is shown on the basis of 2002 statistics supplemented by respective comparative references to 2001 and 2000. That indicated that, between 2000 and 2001, GNP increased in current prices by 5.2%, while considerable differences were observed in the increases in particular regions. In the Mazowieckie, the increase exceeded 10%, while in the Opolskie, it was less than 1%. Those figures are also reflected in the indexes of relations between secondary and primary housing market transactions in 2002: 1.6 and 6.7, respectively (with a six times lower number of transactions) at the national average of 2.5. Our analysis indicates that there are considerable differences in demographic or economic conditions of development between regions, and they are reflected in the local housing market trends. We can thus conclude that it is necessary to adjust local strategies for satisfying housing demand to specific requirements and generally adopted directions of social and economic development.

The purpose of the article. The aim of this paper is to examine the impact of digital technologies, including FinTechs, on competition in the EU banking sector. Methodology. This paper consists of qualitative and quantitative analysis using panel regression models. In the theoretical part, on the basis of the available literature on the subject, the important role of FinTech enterprises in shaping the level of competitiveness in the financial sector, all over the world, including in the EU, was demonstrated. The analysis takes into account the impact of FinTechs, m.in. on barriers to entry and price discrimination. BigTech companies are also included in the theoretical part. Finally, the SCP model was used in the quantitative study. The quantitative study was conducted using linear regressions on panel data for the years 2010–2020. Results of the research. Despite the ambiguous impact of digital techniques on banks’ profitability, the results showed that the increasing size of the banking sector did not result in an increase in profitability due to other market players. In addition, the ongoing consolidation has not resulted in a decrease in competition in the EU banking market, due to FinTech solutions. In addition, the qualitative analysis showed that FinTechs have changed the conditions of competition in the financial market.
