The balancing of public finance and turning the tendency for public debt growth may be more difficult in Poland than in well-developed European Union member states, although the indicators of public finance sector deficit and public debt in relation to GDP are much higher there than in Poland. Measures taken in this area in Poland are less effective due to the slowdown of the Polish economy growth that – despite the improvement in 2013 – in the coming years will remain lower, in comparison to the GDP level of the period preceding the world financial crisis. It creates unfavourable macroeconomic conditions for the reconstruction of the public finance sector. The article attempts to answer the question whether – in the light of the public debt growth in Poland, whose indicator in 2013, according to Eurostat forecasts, should reach 58.2 per cent of GDP, and with difficulties in the state finance reform process – the stability of this sector is sufficiently ensured.

Purpose: The paper's primary purpose is to assess macroeconomic conditions' impact on the sustainable development of transport companies in France, Germany and Poland from 2008 to 2020. The study is important for the stable development of the transport sector and for ensuring a balance between socioeconomic and environmental development. Design/methodology/approach: The research goal was achieved thanks to creating sustainable development indicators using the normalization method of variables; additionally, econometric models were developed using the Ordinary Least Square (OLS) and the Seemingly Unrelated Regression (SUR) methods. Findings: The analysis results indicate that in France, Germany and Poland, there is a positive trend in the sustainable development of transport companies. What is more, its high rates also remain at the time of the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic. Economic growth is an essential macroeconomic condition which positively affects sustainable development and its pillars. Research limitations/implications: The research limitations are related to data availability at the level of sectors, the selected research period, the selection of variables, and the normalization method. Moreover, the econometric methods were selected for estimating equations. Practical implications: The empirical implications include that the research results can help those in power (formulation of specific legal regulations and conditions for sustainable development of enterprises). Furthermore, those managing enterprises should focus not only on the company's internal situation but also on analyzing macroeconomic factors continuously. Social implications: Social development is crucial for the sustainable development of enterprises. Therefore it is necessary to take measures to develop human capital. Originality/value: The study's novelty is the comparative assessment of the sustainable development of the transport sector in France, Germany and Poland. In addition, it should be noted that modern statistical methods were used for the analyses.

The main aim of the paper is to discuss selected problems related to sustainable development, corporate social responsibility (CSR) and the concept of environment, social responsibility and corporate governance (ESG) in the era of geopolitical and economic crisis. The research hypothesis is: “Sustainable development/CSR/ESG is resistance to changes and crises for enterprises that want to meet market challenges and build their competitive position”. Implementing the research objective required the method of retrospective and critical review of selected Polish and English-language literature on the subject. The literature review based on the Scopus, Web of Science and BazEkon databases. The analysis results indicate that sustainable development/CSR/ESG eliminate negative phenomena in crises, prevents the degradation of the natural environment, supports social inclusion and integrates the organization and management of economic entities.

Realizacja celu badawczego wymagała zastosowania metody retrospektywnego i krytycznego przeglądu wyselekcjonowanej polskiej i anglojęzycznej literatury przedmiotu. Przegląd literatury sporządzono na podstawie baz Scopus, Web of Science i BazEkon. Wyniki analiz wskazują, że zrównoważony rozwój, CSR i ESG pozwalają na niwelowanie negatywnych zjawisk w sytuacjach kryzysowych, zapobiegają degradacji środowiska naturalnego, wspierają inkluzję społeczną oraz integrują organizację i zarządzanie podmiotami gospodarczymi.
