The objective of this study is to analyse the unofficial “second culture” media image (Czech cultural underground in the 70s and 80s of the 20th century) in the official periodicals (Rudé právo etc.) in comparison with the media image of the current unofficial subculture (freetekno) in the printed or online newspapers. The study focuses on police actions against the festivals organized by these two social groups. The key question is whether it is possible to find — in terms of conceptualization and representation of single subculture members — common features, argumentative procedures and means of expression. Considering the fundamental role of the historical context in both cases under scrutiny, the paper theoretically and methodologically draws from the Discourse-Historical Approach (DHA) developed by Ruth Wodak.

Vzhledem k tomu, že analýza zohledňuje zejména roli historického kontextu a vývoj mediálního obrazu, teoreticko-metodologicky vychází zejména z diskurzivně-historického přístupu vyvinutého Ruth Wodakovou.

This study deals with the transformation that Czech literature and literary culture have undergone as new media and communications technologies (particularly the internet) have come onto the scene and proliferated since the latter half of the 1990s. The study comes together with a contrasting analysis of the relations between the 1920s Czech literary avant-garde and film, the new media of its era. The methodological framework for the study is the concept of remediation as presented by Jay David Bolter and adapted by the author of the study for the requirements of literary history research. The material that is reviewed is structured in terms of two key spheres, the first being formed by the Czech internet environment itself, giving rise to new possibilities and opportunities for creative work, as well as the presentation and reflection of literary texts (hypertexts structures, literary forums and blogs), while the second refer at the compositional, genre and thematic levels to the new digital technologies and media (the blog novel, e-mail novel and text-message poems). In conclusion the study defines three basic ways in which Czech literature interacts with the internet (for artistic, distributive and marketing use).

Content available remote On the use of surnames in Polish newspaper headlines

The present article discusses the frequency and function of surnames in newspaper headlines. Additionally, it signals the fact that the surname´s prestigious status as one of the personal rights has been continually threatened, and shows possible media contribution to this process. The article aims to address such issues as the characteristic features of the media language (mainly its colloquial character and a tendency to enhance the forcefulness of expression), surname as one of the personal rights, or surnames in the context of etiquette. Newspaper titles targeting broad audience such as „Gazeta Wyborcza“, „Gazeta Polska“, „Rzeczpospolita“, „Polityka“ etc. were the main source of linguistic material for analysis; the analysed press samples covered the period from February till June 2014. The proportion of surname-featuring headlines in the scrutinized newspapers and magazines seems to vary. This kind of headlines is most often employed by „Gazeta Wyborcza“ because well-known surnames are very effective attention-grabbers (the most frequently used surnames appeared to be Putin, Kaczyński, and Tusk).

Objectives. The goal of this analysis was to model and estimate the impact of risk factors for various types of suicidal behavior (thoughts, plans, and attempts) in Czech adolescents. Sample and settings. Data (N=5999) were selected from the 2015 European School Survey Project on Alcohol and Other Drugs (ESPAD), and included questions mapping relevant risk factors for suicidal behavior (including exposure to suicide reported in the media with interest in it and exposure to suicide of a loved one). Analysis. Binary multivariate logistic regression analyses revealed models that were individually designed for suicidal thoughts, plans, and attempts (separately for boys and girls), and that detected risk factors for each expression of suicidal behavior with varying degrees of severity. Each model was tested separately for boys and girls because of existing gender differences. A total of 9 models using SPSS 20 software were created. Results. Analyses showed that the exposures are in addition to other selected risk indicators – daily smoking, satisfaction with a relationship to one´s parents, and the suicide of a loved one – significant predictors of suicidal behaviors in adolescents. Conclusions. With regard to the resulting risk factors it would be appropriate for the media in publishing suicides to follow the manual concerning the prevention of suicide for journalist created by WHO and also to instruct adolescents in how to handle such information, for example through appropriate psychological and media education in school. Study limitations. The limitations of the study include the selected age cohort, where the majority of the sample is between the ages of 16–17, the methodology related to the selection of variables, where the Forward LR method is more consistent with the study´s objective, which was finding the best possible model while preserving the multifactorial nature of suicidal behaviors.

Cíl. Cílem této studie bylo modelovat a odhadnout míru rizikových faktorů pro jednotlivé projevy suicidálního chování (myšlenky, plány a pokusy) u českých adolescentů. Metody. Studie využívá vybraných dat (N = 5999) z Evropské školní studie o alkoholu a jiných drogách (ESPAD) 2015, kam byly zařazeny otázky, mapující relevantní faktory pro suicidální chování (včetně expozice a zájem o publikované sebevraždy v médiích a expozice sebevraždě někoho blízkého v okolí adolescenta). Limity studie. Limity studie jsou vybraná věková kohorta, kde těžiště tvoří adolescenti ve věku 16 a 17 let, a metoda výběru proměnných do modelu, kde použitá metoda Forward LR více odpovídá cíli studie – nalezení co nejlepšího možného modelu při zachování multifaktoriální povahy suicidálních projevů chování.

The paper deals with the dispute about management of the Šumava National Park. The paper characterizes the discourse on the Šumava National Park on the basis of two interviews with the representatives of the contradictory positions. It analyzes the central topics, topoi and concepts by applying the Discourse-Historical Approach (DHA). The paper focuses on the way how both interviewees construct their opponent, how they construct the attribute “human” and in which contexts they use pronouns “we” and “they”. The paper reveals that the way of displaying the past is crucial for the identification of both dominant narratives. The basic interdiscursive relations in which the discourse on the Šumava National Park is involved are also outlined.
